By Victor Reyes
Officers linked to last year’s failed power grab yesterday said the recent reports of attempts to destabilize the Arroyo government were concocted by the military leadership to justify the coup rumors they themselves floated.
In a statement, the officers said the revelation of Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. about the supposed plan is nothing but a psychological strategy to suppress what they said were the “voices of truth.”
The statement was released to mediamen who covered the resumption of the court martial proceedings against the accused, who are led by former Marine commandant Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda and former Scout Ranger commander Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim.
The officers they were not aware of any information to destabilize the government, particularly on initial six junior officers who are allegedly recruiting officers and men for the latest destabilization plot,“unless they substantiate their disclosure with names.”
Esperon has said that apart from junior officers, there are also “dismissed officers” who are involved in the recruitment. The “dismissed officers”, he said, were also linked to last year’s failed power grab.
“A statement like this is paranoid (sic), a psywar to threaten and manipulate our soldiers (relief/reassignment without due process) to conform to their own destabilization to further greed for power and exploit this country,” the officers said.
The Marine and Army officers also said that it is government which is destabilizing itself as evidenced by the “scandals and cover-ups” that is going on. “Destabilization is of their own doing,” the officers also said in the statement.
“It is the entire society that has become the mere spectator in the arena of scandals and corruption. The military is but part of the society. This is the battle of the heart, of values, of good versus evil.Good men should rise up and be counted,” they added.
“The Armed Forces leadership has now become the permanent vehicle to suppress voices of truth which can indeed be contagious. Every so often, it serves the AFP leadership to hound Malacanang with the specter of the bogeyman,” they also said.
The detained officers also said that majority of the officers and men share their sentiments about the need to “restore the dignity and respect our institution (the military establishment) as vanguards of democracy.”
They also took a dig at Esperon, who had been mentioned in the controversial Hello Garci tapes as among the generals who allegedly helped in rigging the results of the 2004 presidential elections to ensure President Arroyo’s victory.
“Active/passive participation in the electoral process, considered as the foundation of our democracy, by the military top brass is a violation that sworn oath which will forever haunt Esperon,” the officers said.
They also said that the high number of soldiers who helped send now resigned Lt (sg) Antonio Trillanes IV, one of the leaders of the short-lived Oakwood mutiny in July 2003, to the Senate is a “barometer.”]
“The high percentage of men in uniform who voted for the young Navy lieuntenant to the Senate is a good barometer. No one should be paranoid of the truth,” the officers also said, without elaborating on the “barometer”.
Meanwhile, wives of the officers gave mediamen – who were covering yesterday’s court martial proceedings in Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal – t-shirts. Pictures of the acused, their names and words “The truth shall set us free” were printed on the front of the shirts.
Printed at the back was a statement titled “A few good men”.

Rise up, Good Men of soldiery…kung meron pang natitira sa inyo sa labas ng kulungan!
If your superiors can battle the evil from within their prison cells why can’t you?! You are being fed with inspiring letters from time to time…show these “men of honor”, your true superiors, that you care for your only country!
We are calling on Senators Ping and Pong…please do something about Gen. Miranda’s condition now that it’s in the open! alam na ninyo ngayon.
Kay Hudasan…never mind!
What is in Esperon’s mind is the present scenario unfolding in Myanmar. They are bracing for what is likely to happen in our country as the scandals after scandals in the Gloria administration are being being bared and the military issuing statement of perceived destabilization.
In the news are Myanmar soldiers clubbed and dragged away activists while firing tear gas and warning shots to break up demonstrations. So far, there are already 200 reported deaths. Troops also occupied Buddhist monasteries and cut internet access, raising fears that a deadly crackdown was set to intensify in Myanmar.
The government’s apparent decision to cut public internet access — which has played a crucial role in getting news and images of the pro-democracy protests to the outside world — also raised concerns. The bloggers are fighting for Myanmar, the same way that bloggers at Ellenville are fighting for what is right and what is good for our country.
TP,
If Esperon has reason to believe that there is indeed an plot by a faction of the military to overthrow the government, his job requires him to do things DISCREETLY!
He goes after the military suspects, he grabs them, he brings them in for questioning, he determines the scope of the problem and if he has reasonable proof that there is imminent danger to the Republic, he reports to at least his immediate civilian superior in government, the DND chief and when he has been properly authorized by his commander in chief, only then does he break the news to the public!
If there’s an element of truth at all in what he purports, he is bound by the most basic of military rules – let alone by common sense – to shut up, to zip it for as long as it takes, and to do his work first in silence. He must aboslutely NOT GO AROUND MUCKRAKING in front of the press… completely idiotic military tactic, complete waste of energy, complete waste of time.
He should be running after the criminals who beheaded ten Philippine Marines in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan instead of wasting airtime and newspaper space!
If this is his brand of psy-war, I’m not surprised, he’s not won the war against the NPAs, the rag-tag, donning sleepers of the Abu Sayyaff and he certainly won’t win against the nation’s parallel army, the MILF.
To have Esperon as military chief is already a military surrender. Why waste troops’ lives fighting a losing battle?
Napikon si Bakero este Bacarro sa phrase na “A FEW GOOD MEN”!
The bastards, tinamaan ba, Luz?
Paper psywar…Asspweron is an epitome of extreme mental retardation!
It’s not all in Esperon’s mind…it’s all in Esperon’s ass !
Everybody knows all these talks about destabilization, etc. BS are a desperate attempt to either save face or garner sympathy for the criminal running the Philippines like hell. It should be stopped. It is not at all helping the Philippines look better than what its present image of being a country where the presidents are conceived to be robbers and thieves, the unano included! Nakakahiya ang mga ungas na ito!
BTW, Ellen, you should try to write likewise about those war veterans who have been swindled of their pensions, etc. by Ramos, et al. Golly, monies received from the US, these crooks even try to deduct some commissions they do not deserve! Sobrang garapalan!
Yuko,
You’re absolutely right! It is the government of Arroyo and her chicken generals who are destabilizing the country themselves.
Chi
The government is already doing everything to harass and instill fear among the civilians and groups who are against the administration’s wrongdoings. Matagal na nilang ginagawa. Ibang klase si Gloria. Hindi nila pinapoporma ang demos and rallies and that’s the reason why the so called people power cannot muster enough crowd. The military under Esperon are ready to maim and kill as we are already witness to it in many instances. That’s what are the tanks for with the soldiers in war footing during the Sona and Erap’s verdict. Mas marami pa sila sa mga rallyists.
Those who are saying at nangantiyaw that the Filipinos are cowards for not doing what the Buddhists are doing in Myanmar are those who are far from the streets in Manila. It is not cowardice to observe, wait and wait for the right time. That time will come and it’s the TURNING POINT.
But in the meantime, to live each day is far more important for the poor and hungry Filipinos rather than facing the barrel of the guns of soldiers of Esperon. Walang kalaban laban sa sumandaling ito. We could see the nostril of Esperon spewing smoke ready to pounce on perceived enemies. What’s all in Esperon’s mind is survival at yan ang nakakatakot because he has the guns with live bullets.
“That’s what are the tanks for with the soldiers in war footing during the Sona and Erap’s verdict.”
Part of Esperon’s psy-war of course, to intimidate the public.
Agree: “It is not cowardice to observe, wait and wait for the right time. “
Pikon si General Assperon dahil hindi siya kasali sa ‘few good men’ng Armed Forces of the Philippines. May araw din ang supot na yan.
As expected, Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, would certainly chide “..the camp of the accused for coming up with the t-shirt with the words “a few good men”” because he & those of his kind are not amongst the “few good men”. Instead of getting pikon, they should come up with their own t-shirt with the words, “I am an Ass-Licker”.
Ellen,
I’m going to place an order for a few t-shirts to give away as presents to my son and his friends at school!
So others may also read it in this thread,
In Ellenville (ville means city in Montreal) I read, hear, smell no bomb for a long time now so I preferred to shut my trap for a while. amid the noisy rantings, yaking and yaking from technosphere. This time I shall offer something no less inferior: a whistle bomb.
It is too much to expect of me to be better than Gloria, Esperon, Joker, or Neri. Etc. etc. Supot leaders come from supot people. I can shout to whole world I am not supot. And the world looks down at me and says: O Yeah?
Anyway, here is the whistle bomb. If it explodes and kills me, for democracy. I will be happy even in hell.
Pres. Bush should know that in the Philippines, No NEED for US Marines, two phantom jets and eight bombs will do it. One or two bombs each for Malacanang, Batasan, the Supreme Court. The Senate, Camp Crame, Camp Aguinaldo and Fort Bonifacio And that’s it. Camp Capinpin will go down, Fort Magsaysay will follow to finish the criminals. Ang Kapulisan in all the metro cities will join the people. Even kill their own bad ones.
One jet and three direct hit bombs to Malacanang, Aguinaldo and Bonifacio might just do it, HELLO DUBYA ! YOU THERE? That should
start the metro conflagration to sire democracy. Filipinos do not loot, today so many are poor and hungry that they might just forget their Christianity, their cardinal, their bishops and priests and give themselves a bite of real food.
When the bomb explodes:
In the Visayas and Mindanao soldiers will disarm or put bullets to the skulls of their corrupt generals, colonels and majors (under Gloria corruption start to flourish from the rank of major). All over the country like the time of liberation army retirees, soldiers and generals will come out of their holes and guide the citizenry for a massive community cleansing for a new true and world class democracy.
That’s what I mean nakakakilabot, pero sa mga supot whistle bomb lang yan. Phhhhpttt! IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. Not in a forty-year olds’ lifetime. Sa Myanmar baka una pang mangyari!
Chabeli, that is a very good idea! Asspweron’s picture on an ASS and in the back it says, A Garci General and an asslicker! This will sell more t-shirts. I will order dozens and dozens of these shirts!
Ellen,
Front ng T-shirt ay ” A FEW GOOD MEN” (sa military at nakakulong pa).
Back T-shirt ay “Hundreds Bad EGGS official in Military” (nakawala pa rin).
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
Jay, what you are saying is indeed true. The US came to the rescue of Cory then and in seconds over 100 soldiers died! They can do it again if they want to. I think the NBN scandal is their making to shake the tiyanak as she is too close to China. As long as they can hold the tiyanak by the neck, the US will keep her in her position until 2010 or even beyond. The US may be using Joey de Venicia now to straighten this tiyanak. We will see what is next.
If our country deteriorates more, your scenario may be a very good alternative indeed!
Just wondering, despite all the noise going around through most major dailies worldwide and also by word of mouth from Pinoys scattered all over the planet, no other country seems to have expressed official sympathy even to just condemn all these murders, disappearances, widespread oppression, non-stop plunder, etc in the same sustained magnitude of global outcry as what Myanmar is getting these days.
Remember, 830 activists, peasants, student leaders, pastors, ordinary folks have been slaughtered, another significant number are missing, billions of pesos are stolen almost daily, yet no one is being held accountable and this has been going on for six years!
I thought the top-level legislative mission headed by the lady senator from California would carry through to a final resolution of this one-sided conflict. I even fantasized that people who were fencesitting then would finally stand up and be counted as they are “supposed to”, now that Aunt Samantha has shown us her slip. Nada.
Are we masochists, or numb, or just stupid?
God, what did we do to deserve this?
Tongue,
Re “God, what did we do to deserve this?”
I think the fact that we allowed Gloria, her husband and all the other power grabbers to get away wtih what they did: wreck the Constitution and demolish the rule of law in 2001!
Or better yet: God, pls show us the way how to get rid of these most despicable creations of yours – now!
hawaiianguy;
Keelhauling fits the punishment so that they can learn about the agony and despair of these brave soldiers,Broda!
hawaiianguy;
“God, kunin mo na po sila para matapos na ang aming paghihirap. Pakiuna lang po si GMA at si FG.”
Broda!ano ka ba naman, hirap na nga tayo dito sa mundong ito dahil sa kanila, tapos gusto mo pa na mauna sila sa pupuntahan natin.Pag nauna sila doon sa kaharian ng Dyos, palagay ang mga pilipinong susunod sa kanila ay nanaisin na lang magtiis sa nag-aapoy na baga kesa makisama pang muli sa kanila.Hehehehe!
Seriously, we may realize that everything is part of God’s grand design. The good will not be known unless man sees evil. For evil to triumph, it only takes the majority of the good men (and women) to do nothing.
Gloria’s illegitimate regime is coming to its end, it’s demons are now wrecking havoc and destruction that destabilizes itself. While it has sown its own seeds of destruction, it may not self-destruct so soon. Most Filipinos are now fed up with what has been happening in our country. But they won’t lift a finger unless there is some guarantee that change will happen, or that change will be for the public good. In times of crisis – we are in it right now – people are quickly moved to action when someone with untainted leadership will dare go forward. I think people are just waiting for moral leaders to hurl the first stone.
hawaiianguy;
HW,
Ang tagal naman! I agree, all is part of God’s grand design, pero naniniwala rin ako sa sabi ni Ninoy ” Kundi Ngayon, Kailan”!
Sino kaya iyang katagal ng hinihintay na “someone with untainted leadership will dare go forward”, mukhang hindi pa ipinapanganak. heheh!

Hahahahah!
Pare Cocoy, good point, hehehehe! Pakisabi na lang kaya kay San Pedro na bigyan sila ng temporary visa sa langit, na may nakatatak na ganito: “Good for 1 hour pass to heaven, and infinite time to hell; not authorized to hold meetings with anyone.” Ano say mo?
Tell you, Tongue, why. It is because the Filipinos, as I see it, are not as brave as many of my Burmese friends. I see Japanese in their daily protest in front of their embassy but their number still exceeds the number of Japanese supporters there compared to the protests we have conducted against the extrajudicial killings in front of the Philippine Embassy.
In many cases, AKO lang ang may lahing pilipino!!! Takot iyong mga pilipino na ma-identify at hindi na makumbida sa mga pakulo ng Philippine Embassy, including the expensive dinners for the Filipino community (kuno) when the unano comes for her regular asking for Japanese alms for her spending sprees!!! Me? I don’t attend such useless parties, etc. as a matter of fact as they are waste of time.
Iyong siguro ang kaibahan when you belong to a society used to be graced by the nobles and kings (emperors)!
Frankly, I am not fond of our society balls here either. Sumasakit ang leeg ko because one has to be prime and proper in such balls. Hindi puede ang bungisngis, and the Japanese used is the classy one that has to be learned in some finishing school. Pati pagsuot nga ng kimono pinag-aaralan e, pagkilos, even paghawak ng chopsticks at pag-inom ng tea. Kaya madalas, pass na lang ako.
I just attend the annual ball in our church, mas masaya pa or the monthly events at the Cambridge and Oxford U Society lalo na kung may bibisitang royalty. That I attend kahit sumakit ang leeg ko, but for what? Curiosity maybe!
Contrary to popular beliefs, people do not go to heaven without going through the usual process of being judged as a resurrected being. It is a requirement. And I doubt if Gloria Dorobo can even get to the first step to heaven with the more than 800 victims of extrajudicial killings under her regime for which she is and will be definitely held accountable for. Simple lang naman kasi, either we are for God or Mammon (Satan), and can distinguish between good and evil, virtue and vice, pleasure and pain, right and wrong. We are free to make our choice. Call it free agency!
“These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. ” (Prov. 6: 16-29)
Baka sila matauhan. Ellen, pakisabi kung sinong puedeng ma-kontak. Please inform me privately.
“Release Aung San Suu Kyi Now”
Wow. I really don’t know where some people get the nerve.
Bibeth,
As if Aung San Suu Kyi knows her. User talaga itong si Gloria, can’t stop pretending.
Chi,
All in the mind of General H Esperon, Armed Supot(s) of the Philippines!
Welcome to the blog kung ikaw nga.
Pechanco, yes it’s Bibeth, the writer, actress and a great human being.
Welcome Bibeth.
Nanood pa ng “Les Miserables”. Did she understand the message of Les Miserables, which is about fight against tyranny?
Bibeth and I are also together in “I can serve”, a group of cancer survivors who try to make life meaningful.
I doubt kung concentrated with GLORC sa palabas.
May I ask Bibeth about her health? Alam kong may karamdaman din siya. But she’s a very strong woman. Magaling na artista. If I’m not mistaken, she’s also Bisaya. Bibeth, please continue to write for we certainly appreciate your input. God bless you.
From a military officer:
Bacarro said, “There are more good men that are not detained.”
That’s true, only few of us are incarcerated.
Incarceration is not just being confined to the four concrete walls. It also means being imprisoned by selfish ambition and greed.
What is doable now is to proceed on to an economic rebellion. Just buy less of the vatable items and we’ll go bankrupt. There will be less funds in the coffer to rummage in corruption.
wow! one of my few favorites.
welcome miss bibeth.

We have peaceful non=violent silent alternatives that could be applied here, but people appear to be afraid to discuss it let alone apply it. We deserve this evil woman.
These citizens in Burma not only talk but walk the talk and DO IT!
Nothing to stop thousands of Filipino citizens in silent non-violent walks around cities to get world attention.
Circular walks that allow Filipino citizens to join and leave walks at will – a continuous protest, no need to include church leaders.
Magno,
Remember, we have Bishop Cruz! He’s good, he works and he tends to his flock.
One of the very few good men – thank heavens for that!
But I think Bishop Cruz has retired and no longer active as Bishop. Yes, he’s among the few good Bishops. Shame on Rosales, Villegas and the rest! Weeks, months have passed and we still do not hear from CBCP about the ZTE deal scam. They issued a statement saying Erap should be pardoned but all his wealth should not be returned to him.
“We have peaceful non=violent silent alternatives that could be applied here, but people appear to be afraid to discuss it let alone apply it. We deserve this evil woman.”
WWNL,
Majority of pinoys are already asleep, they don’t care!
“Circular walks that allow Filipino citizens to join and leave walks at will – a continuous protest, no need to include church leaders.”
WWNL,
‘Continuous circular walks’, we do this in our meditation practice, very effective!
Gloria and Asspweron will surely find ways and means to stop this kind of protest, but it will catch others attention to our plight for sure!

I know your right in what you say, the majority in Burma are too proud to allow the likes of Assperon and this evil woman to make a mockery of them and are prepared to lay their life on-the-line that’s why the world talks about their plight and admire them for their stand – Filipino no longer have that courage to stand against this evil woman and Assperon – As I said Filipino deserve this evil woman if they are not prepared to openly protest and make a stand also.
The majority of Filipino expect others to fight their corner, like the Sanate – but they shouls be protesting peacefully like the people in Burma from all sides at every opportunity – we cannot rely on help from Pinoy or the world at large until we in the Philippines are seen to be protesting and prepared to do something ourselves.
We all run to hold a vigil for Neri, how stupid we all are, we should be throwing eggs at him – I remember Assperon didn’t like the ‘Egg Treatment’ did he.
like the Senate – sori
I don’t know really how to “read” our masa. You still have to push them. Provide them transpo, a few snacks, they’re going! But you can feel the commitmet is not that deep because you know they were there because of the provisions. On their own, I’m not sure they would even bother.
I have yet to see the day when they knock at my door and ask me if I’m going to this or that rally. It has always been my initiative. I guess it’s how they percieve their leaders, leaders are expected to be committed all the way.
EDSA 3 may have taught them a lesson or two, remember it Miriam was on stage, “Sugod na, ngayon na, paalisin na si Gloria Tarantada!” and those like her who provoked the crowd and goaded the masa into believing they were there with them up to the end. But they were the first ones to leave at the first sign of trouble.
That is the character, I believe, that the masa is looking for, “walang iwanan”, “walang laglagan” is their battlecry.
You read the our masa very well, Tongue.
“That is the character, I believe, that the masa is looking for, “walang iwanan”, “walang laglagan” is their battlecry.”
I’m as perplexed as you, Tongue. Frustrated, I think, is the more appropriate word. Not only for the “masa” but for everybody.
What is happening (Gloria Arroyo getting away with all the crimes she has committed) defies my idea of divine justice God must have a reason for. It’s still a mystery to me.
Tongue,
“On their own, I’m not sure they would even bother.”
History has always shown that if left alone, the masa wouldn’t lift a finger to do anything to cause social change. That’s why the Bolsheviks was so bloody. They had to kill many of their own.
The film, Fiddler on the Roof is a classic show of typical masa apathy.
I once asked my spiritual guru, a very high and respected Buddhist monk, why Pinas can’t seem to find the right leader. He told me that it’s because the collective consciousness of people is not yet ready.
The people might not be ready for collective consciousness but Malacanang is always ready for collectiON consciousness…collect dito, collect doon.
hi everyone, so thankful for your support and prayers….
i would just like to comment on esperons statement in a newspaper..where he said “nag papacute lang daw ang mga dependents dun”…. well to you general esperon: in the first place di na namin kailangan magpa cute kasi cute naman talaga..hahaha asarrr!!! but seriously dear friends here, even if esperon is reeeeeaaaallly trying his best and strength na pahirapan kami,( during visiting days hirap kami pumasok sa camp, dami food nasisira, napapanis sa gate kasi it will take 2-3hours for us to wait dun before we can get in, even if super heavy rain ganun pa rin po, our cars will be left in the gym near the first gate about 2 kilometers pa from the detention center, a military jeep na magkatetanus ka talaga if hindi ka mag-ingat will fetch us, sometimes 2 trips pa kasi hindi kasya( even new born baby ganun ang sitwasyon), i mean to say esperon is really getting nervous na hindi na nya alam ano sasabihin nya kundi “pacute daw kami”!!!! so funny talaga ano?) we still have peace of mind and peace in our hearts, we can sleep well at night kasi if you come to think of it, it is very evident and i am confident to say that god is on our side and god is working on it, in his own time, in his own way…..see? up until now hindi ni esperon ma arraign ang colorum court nya!!!! it takes him barely 2years peru kahit anong order nya to convine the court, for some divine intervention hindi natutuloy…..of course it is because of the prayers who believed in their cost..thank you po sa inyo lahat…
to col baccaro’s statement naman ” there are more good men outside”…..MORE? so meaning he acknowledge the ” few good men”..hehehehe sila sila rin ang nahuhuli sa sarili nilang bibig, bwahahahah to you col baccaro…. and sir, yes you are right po, there are more good men outside…exactly sir!!!!! kaya mag-ingat kayo sir kasi madami pa silang good men outside….kaya matakot ka,ok?
