Former intelligence agent T/Sgt. Vidal Doble yesterday said a confidante of President Arroyo had offered him help on condition that he not testify on the “Hello Garci” controversy.
Doble, appearing at the Senate inquiry on the “Hello Garci” wiretapping controversy, said he met “Medy,” later identified as Remedios Poblador, at the quarters of then AFP chief Gen. Efren Abu in Camp Aguinaldo, where he was reunited with his wife Arlene and children Darren and Danica in June 2005.
Doble said Arlene identified “Medy” as the personal secretary of President Arroyo.
“Lumapit po siya sa asawa ko at sinabi niya na kung may problema, siya lang ang lapitan. Sinabi niya kay Arlene na siya ang bahala kung hindi ako magte-testify,” he said.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson, during his interrogation of Doble, said Medy is “actually Remedios Poblador,” an undersecretary in the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office.
Doble said “Medy” was wearing rubber shoes, T-shirt and denim pants when he saw her at Abu’s quarters.
He said he would be able to identify “Medy” should he see her again.
Lacson said a check with Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, then a congressman, showed Poblador was not seen discharging her duties at the House.
“I did a little background investigation and research and I found she is the personal confidante of PGMA (Arroyo). Information has it that there are only two persons personally allowed by PGMA to ride in her car, Lupita Kashiwahara and Poblador,” Lacson said.
Lacson also said Poblador arranged for a helicopter to fetch Bishop Socrates Villegas from Bataan to San Carlos Seminary in Makati City.
Doble sought refuge in the seminary in June 2005 after revealing in a press conference that he wiretapped the phone conversations of former election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano at the height of the canvassing of the 2004 elections.
He has said he gave the wiretapped recordings to Angelito Santiago, an NBI agent who in turn gave these to former NBI deputy director Samuel Ong.
Doble testified that after the press conference, Villegas fetched him from San Carlos Seminary and brought him to Camp Aguinaldo.
He said Villegas asked him if he wanted to see his wife and children.
Villegas then led him to a black van that Doble said was owned by Rear Adm. Tirso Danga, then head of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces (Isafp).
“Naka-hanger pa ang uniform niya sa loob ng sasakyan,” Doble said.
“Namumukhaan ko rin po ang driver niya,” he added.
At Camp Aguinaldo, Doble said they went directly to the so-called White House, or the residence of the AFP chief, where he saw Abu, then deputy chief of staff Gen. Edilberto Adan, and Poblador.
Cayetano said Poblador first served as secretary of former President Corazon Aquino and then with Arroyo’s staff.
Villegas confirmed fetching Doble from the seminary but said he did not do it for Malacañang.
“I wish to state categorically that I did what I did because of my love and concern for our distressed and confused seminarians whose building was trespassed and whose seminary rhythm and priestly discipline was disturbed,” Villegas said in a letter to the three committees jointly conducting the investigation.
“I did it as a bishop whose main duty is to be a father to his priests and future priests. If there was indeed to be a military operation in the seminary to bring out Mr. Doble and Attorney Ong that day, I wanted to be with our seminarians and priests at that moment of crisis to assure them, to console them and tell them I was ready to die with them.”
The letter was hand-delivered by Sen. Benigno Aquino III to the joint probe. Aquino is a member of the defense committee and the Blue Ribbon committees which are conducting the probe together with the electoral reforms panel.
Villegas said priests at the seminary called him up in the morning of June 13, 2005 to seek his help, saying the presence of Doble and Ong in the compound and the media frenzy outside were causing disorder.
Villegas said he also received a call from Medy Poblador that same day. He said he asked her if he could help resolve “the ongoing crisis” at the seminary compound.
Villegas said he knew Poblador as one of the assistants of former President Corazon Aquino and now working as a “staff” of President Arroyo.
He said Poblador also asked for his help and even warned him that violence could erupt anytime since the military was thinking of using force to ferret out Ong and Doble from the seminary compound.
He said this alarmed him. He said he immediately said yes when Poblador sought his help.
“Of course for our seminarians I will do everything,” Villegas recounted telling Poblador.
He said he was fetched by a military helicopter from Balanga City, which was arranged by Poblador, and was brought to Camp Aguinaldo where he was briefed of the situation. He then proceeded to the seminary aboard a van provided by Danga. He remembered being told by one of the military officials that they have under their care Doble’s wife inside the officers’ quarters.
On the way to the seminary, Villegas said he called up Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales to seek his blessings, who then instructed him to “exhaust all means to avoid violence.”
He said he talked to Doble in the reception area of the seminary and showed to him the mobile phone number of his wife registered on his cell phone directory to prove that he was “a good person.”
Doble was also able to talk to his wife through his mobile phone and then subsequently asked that he be brought to his wife, Villegas said.
Villegas said he and Doble were brought back to Camp Aguinaldo aboard the same black van and were led to a room at AFP Officers Club where Doble’s wife and his two children were waiting.
He said he left afterwards but reiterated to the military officers present that “I really did it for our seminarians and not for anyone in government.”
Senate probers initially argued whether the joint panel should accept the letter of Villegas as evidence.
Sen. Rodolfo Biazon, lead joint committee chair, ruled that the letter would be accepted for the time being until it could be accepted as “evidence.”
The senators on the motion of Sen. Juan Ponce also voted to summon Villegas to personally appear before the joint panel.
Sen. Joker Arroyo said accepting the letter in lieu of Villegas’ presence could set off a precedent wherein invited guests of the Senate would just submit their letter “instead of coming here.”
Cayetano, Blue Ribbon chairman, said the joint committee should, in fact, be grateful that Villegas was able to send them a letter as compared to the Malacañang officials who could not write their testimonies and attend the joint hearings.
“Others can’t even come because of EO 464, because Malacañang refuses to allow its people to give their side,” Cayetano said.
Administration senators hit the alleged “coaching” by colleagues amid glaring “inconsistencies” in Doble’s testimony.
Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman of the electoral reforms committee, said Lacson “virtually testified” for Doble when the latter failed to establish the identity of “Medy.”
“We don’t want people to say that the ones investigating here are also the ones answering the questions. Otherwise, we don’t need Mr. Doble here,” he said.
Sen. Joker Arroyo pointed to the “anomaly” of a senator testifying at a Senate hearing on behalf of a witness.
“We should set a standard here. Senators can never testify at hearings for the simple reason that we cannot question or cross-examine them to determine if what they are saying is the truth,” he said.
During the hearing, Gordon asked Doble if there are other members of his team who could have given the tapes to other persons outside of Isafp.
Before Doble could answer, Lacson said Doble would not know that.
Gordon asked Lacson to allow Doble to answer the question.
It was also Lacson who provided information about Poblador after Doble said that he would be able to identify her if he saw her again.
Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, another Arroyo ally, said Doble’s testimony was not “double hearsay but Doble’s hearsay.”
Enrile cited Doble’s earlier testimony before the Court of Appeals that he chose to stay at the Isafp compound because he was afraid of Ong.
Now, Enrile pointed out, Doble was saying he stayed at Isafp against his will. “Ibig sabihin, nagsinungaling ka,” Enrile said.
Doble said his statement before the CA, during the habeas corpus petition filed by his girlfriend Marietta Santos, was what his superiors wanted him to say.
“I was with Isafp then and they were holding my family,” Doble said.
Arroyo further refreshed Doble’s memory on his testimony before the House of Representatives during the last Congress.
He said Doble was contradicting himself because he had claimed in his sworn testimony that he was not involved in wiretapping.
“But now he was saying that he along with several agents of Isafp had wiretapped several prominent personalities,” he said.
“In several counts, Doble perjured,” Gordon said.
AFP chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said the military is planning to take legal action against Doble “because some security concerns are unnecessarily prejudiced.”
The Hello Garci political scam cover-up stops at Malacanang’s doorstep. Moro-Moro stage, his unoccupied car had been riddled by machinegun bullets fired by his own men on the night that Proclamation 1081 was signed. If you are Ilocano, and can speak Ilocano, I suggest you write to Enrile. Baka mapahiya! I’m actually writing to him and tell him my sentiments re his patronizing this criminal that he as a lawmaker should condemn. As a lawyer, it is his duty to defend criminals but not at the expense of the welfare and interests of the whole Filipino race.
It is time, he proves he is a Filipino through and through. To be called an Amboy is no longer flattering as a matter of fact.

Why should Enrile accuse Doble of telling a lie and spreading hearsays? Hindi ba niya nare-realize that the man was risking his life for what? Si Gordon, naghahanap ng butas kay Doble na gusto pang mahagip si Lacson tuwing may pagkakataon. Mukha ngang may balak sumabak sa 2010 kaya ganun na lang makaasta. Aba, naungusan na naman sila ni Lacson kahapon dahil sa isyu ni Medy Poblador.
Isa pa, may kabastusan din at akala mo walang pinag-aralan si Tisoy ng Gapo, alumpihit na nga si Doble, at alam na rin ng lahat ang relasyon nito kay Mayet, gusto pa yatang marinig mismo sa labi ni Doble ang ganito: “Opo, kung ang gusto ninyong sabihin ay kung kabit ko si Mayet, sige po aaminin ko po”. Mas maganda siguro kung ganoon ang sagot ni Doble para pag nakita ko iyang si Tisoy uli sa Traders’ o sa Heritage na may kasamang kaibigan tatanungin ko rin siya kung Kabit niya. Fair, diba?
Si Joker, tsuwariwap lang naman kay Enrile. Maalala ko, minsan sinabi ni Joker na tignan daw yung mga magkakasama sa rally, mga leftists tapos kasama si Imee at JV Ejercito, puro raw mga ipokrito. Siya kaya, anong ginagawa niya ngayon sa kampo ni Enrile at Gringo na nilait-lait na rin niya noon. Sino ang mas ipokrito?
Si Bong Revilla, humabol pa sa panghuli, kamote rin naman pala. Kasama siya sa korus nung naunang tatlo kaya lang dahil bida sa pelikula kailangan yata siya ang solo sa ending. Walaring kwenta ang pinagsasabi.

Narinig ko sa balita, sabi ni Ronnie Puno na pamangkin daw ni Cardinal Godeng Rosales itong si Medy Poblador. Kaya naman pala dikit sa mga demonyo itong Obispo ng Simbahan.

When lawyers attack a witness with the like of events in their private lives and nothing to uncover proper evidence to assist the inquiry its a sure sign that their defense of the person they are defending is shaky and best described as absolute panic – moreso when a tight group are seen to be lawyering for the defense of such a corrupt Liar and so early in the inquiry too.
This trio has not done any favours for Schizoglo quite the opposite and we have yet to have Brenda put the icing on the cake – its a Laff, another mental defective who can’t control her motor mouth.

You couldn’t make it up, they have such a smug look on their faces thinking their a smart copy-cat of the once popular Perry Mason series.
To my opinion on this senate inquiry, Doble must be prepare his battle gears, these senator lawyers will attack his credibility until they can have a good argument that Doble is lying. His previous testimonies in congress will hunt him, The senators will find a way to discredit him and usually want only to hear the answers that they want so that they can use those answers that Doble is not trustworthy. When they questioned his girlfriend Mayet, they are laying a foundation and they can raise an argument such as–How can you trust a married man with dependent children while he is having an affair, Of course! it needs money, and the 2 million pesos justified the reason.–
It is like; I have two disc of Bunye; which one is true? It also applies similar to Doble: Which of his statement is true?,The Congress or the Senate! I know some of you don’t like my opinion but, when it comes to reality, this will happen to Doble. They will charge him perjury. I am just concern about his stupidness that will bring him havoc and distress.

It is difficult to compare what Bunye said about the two disc and the fact that lied the last time when he appeared before Congress. Bunye lied when he appeared in front of the whole world on television with the two disc and in doing so is in fear of giving evidence to an inquiry – whereas Doble has proof of his need to hide the truth because his family was kidnapped and in danger two years ago and has revealed the truth. The reality is that they will be hard pressed to charge Doble with perjury because he was held hostage – as for Bunye its doubtful he can defend his ‘two tapes’ statement he made on television.

Kung ang ibig sabihin ng per person ay bawa’t isang tao, ano ang perjury? Di ba per jury, bawa’t isang jury? Kidding aside, in other countries like the US, they have the jury system. Would it work in the Philippines too? That would solve the corruption of the judge kasi hindi lang siya ang magbibigay ng decision kundi jury that’s composed of many people. It’s amazing how this trio of Rottweilers, attack and guard dogs of Gloria ganged up on Doble, a witness who is supposed to clear the air on the hello garci tapes. Instead of helping in finding and arriving at the truth so that closure will finally attained, they showed themselves as the usual suspects, all hell bent in defending the indefensible. The whole country is already in the know of the existence of the tape and almost all Filipinos including themselves believed that the voices therein were those of Gloria and garci, so what is still there to defend from? I hope changes in their perspectives still a possibility on these characters, to broaden it, to focus and act on what is good for the country to move forward and not to stall it; first and foremost we are all Filipinos and supposed to be all one and united, think and do what is good for all and not just for yourselves and for Gloria. Don’t be a lapdog to anybody and give the investigation a chance to succeed.

I for one am glad that Doble agreed to testify and say what he knows. Pero sa tutoo lang, he has a little problem with credibility. Walang iba siya sa maraming jueteng witnesses na bumaligtad. It has become a common practice for some witnesses to testify, then retract, then testify again. That hurts their credibility. Kailangan kasi consistency ng mga statement. Kapag pabago-bago, madaling buweltahan. For instance, Doble could later on say Lacson forced him to testify and offered him money. Kung nanahimik si Doble ng dalawang taon dahil naka-detained daw ang kanyang pamilya, puwede din naman sabihin ng Malacanang na ganyan din ginagawa ngayon ng kalaban gamit si Doble. Kung ako ang tatanungin niyo, naguguluhan ako. What’s most needed is collaborative witnesses. Kung wala, mahihirapan tayo.
