Last Thursday, Gloria Arroyo’s national security adviser, Norberto Gonzales, was again in former President Estrada’s farm in Tanay, Rizal.
It was not the first time that Gonzales visited Estrada in the past two months. Last July 18, he was also there.
A source said Gonzales’ message to Erap had a sense of urgency and desperation. He told the elected president they ousted six years ago that he will be convicted in his plunder case before the Sandiganbayan. He asked Estrada not to call on his people to go to the streets.
Estrada, the source said, told Gonzales that he has no control over what his sympathizers would do if he is convicted because they know that he is innocent of the crimes he is accused of. Gonzales countered with a threat that he would be sent to the Muntinlupa prison.
Will Malacañang dare do that?
One thing sure is that Erap will not be acquitted. Not because the prosecution has made a convincing case that he committed plunder but because to acquit him would nullify the reason for Arroyo’s ascension to power in January 2001 without an election.
It will be remembered that Arroyo rode on the anger of the middle class over corruption in the Estrada administration, not knowing that the one they replaced was much more corrupt. Many of those in Edsa Dos have long regretted their participation in installing her in Malacañang.
This is supported by a SWS survey commissioned by the United Opposition conducted last July in the greater Metro Manila area on the people’s perception of corruption in government.
Sixty-six percent do not believe that Estrada enriched himself from various corrupt practices while he was president.
Seventy-one percent believe that GMA is enriching herself from various corrupt practices while president. Take note: The word is “enriching.” That means the act is ongoing and the loot is growing.
Worse is the public’s perception of Arroyo’s husband, Mike. Seventy-seven percent believe that Mike Arroyo is enriching himself from various corrupt practices while his wife is president.
If we are to total respondents’ opinions on whether Gloria and Mike Arroyo are corrupt, the answer is “nakakahiya.” Twenty-two percent think GMA is “very corrupt”, 29 percent said she is “corrupt” and 27 percent said she is “slightly corrupt” . Total is 78 per cent or almost 8 out of ten people in greater Metro Manila believe the bogus president is corrupt.
Those who said “she is definitely not corrupt” is only 7 per cent and “probably not corrupt”, 11 percent.
Not surprisingly, the public’s opinion of Mike Arroyo is very low. Twenty-eight percent think he is “very corrupt”, 30 percent said he is “corrupt” and 23 percent said he is “probably corrupt” for a total score of 81 percent.
Only 4 percent believe “he is definitely not corrupt” and 9 percent said “probably not corrupt.”
Compare that to how Metro Manilans regard Estrada: Four percent said he is “very corrupt”, 15 percent said “corrupt” and 29 percent said “somewhat corrupt.”
Twenty-seven percent said Estrada is “definitely not corrupt” and 20 percent said “probably not corrupt.”
Given this perception, how would the public accept a “guilty” verdict on plunder while the more avaricious plunderer is residing in Malacañang?
That is what Arroyo and Norberto Gonzales’ paranoia about destabilization is all about.
Sources said Sandiganbayan will come up with a face-saving verdict. Estrada will be convicted but not for plunder, which is punishable with a lifetime imprisonment. Instead they will pin him down on the lesser charge of graft and corruption which is punishable by a shorter term in prison. The court would consider the six years that Estrada has been in detention as time served.
Of course, Arroyo will try to act magnanimous and offer Estrada pardon.
Lest we forget there are also Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and lawyer Ed Serapio as co-accused. If Estrada gets a lesser sentence, it should not be worse for the younger Estrada and Serapio.
Who is this moral dwarf who is nicknamed Gloria to give pardon to a duly elected president of the Republic whom she toppled?
What moral right does she think she have to impose her person on the country?
Estrada is right not to accept a pardon.
Why is our judicial system so corrupt? How can they surrender to the dictates of this tapeworm?
Gloria is the ultimate anay! She’s lethal. Anays ought to be exterminated – that way they don’t cause any more damage.
Mongolid Gonzales two visits to Erap in Tanay showed how little Gloria regards of herself. Even she’s not convinced that Erap is guilty of plunder.

At this point when Glorias approval rating is way beyond -nil, while the gera-gerahan in Basilan, “Hilo” Garci, and ZTE scandals are thrown at her kapangitan, Erap should not worry at all.

The verdict was already out since the first day of trial. GMA has manipulated the judiciary to such a point that she could dictate anything to her favor. The hard sell of the administration on the Erap case did not come up with the people’s sentiment. The administration is getting so much flaks at all flanks and teetering so that the Plan B or the soft approach is implemented thru the back door visits. Either guilty or not, the people has a sharp axe to grind on the necks of the people upstair. What they wish to happen now is to get the assurance of Erap to be merciful to them should they be toppled sooner as expected. The only ace left with the administration is the delay of the barangay election should Erap fails to agree with their concessions. The overstaying barangay official is their fifth column.

My favorite is “Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.” (Jer. 14: 14)

A simple formula should do the trick, don’t you think, i.e., don’t pay bribe! Don’t accept bribe! If bribing is taking place, denounce the culprits.
I know, I know, easier said than done but how, in heaven’s name, do we start reforming a judicial system or any erring system for that matter if we don’t do this?
Takes monumental courage to do it, that’s a given, but cowardice is not a guarantee for success either, i.e., that the people who engage in bribing (both receiver and giver) win so why not opt for the more courageous stand, at least you go down fighting?

Addendum to what pechanco said above..no offense meant to the El Shaddai members (and they are quite many and growing here in JC)..I was invited to their prayer meeting two Sundays ago and I went. It has to do with the desperation and hardship of the masses and their perception that there isn’t any one else they could look to except Erap. In that Erap has no equal because there isn’t anyone in the political horizon with whom the masses — or a substantial segment of them — identify. He is the physical incarnation of their hope for a better life — the only hope, in fact — and in that sense, he is really the only thing of value that they hold. They have nothing else.
Remove Erap then, as this government intends to do, and you literally snatch from the masses the one and only precious thing they have, fragile as it is.
That’s why this piece believes that if Erap is convicted, it becomes a question of time before the masses go berserk — as they did during those three terrifying days that made up Edsa III. I’ve always had the thought that thinks will get worse before it gets better and I think that maybe that moment of change is around the corner and imminent with the expected guilty verdict to be delivered by the corrupt justices of the Sandiganbayan.
With the mood of the masses being that of having had enough of the Lies and the present investigations revealing the huge amounts of corrupt money being demanded by government officials even though it would take years for taxpayers to repay these loans (with the VAT regulatios everyone is a taxpayer even the un-employed!) if Many of those in Edsa Dos have long regretted their participation in installing her in Malacañang then lets remember that soldiers come from these very same families – the writing is on the wall. Its more than likely that she and her corrupt partners will be ejected bodily by the many people sympathetic to Erap once the verdict has been delivered. You can feel the tension in the air.
