A senseless war

Gloria Arroyo thinks talking tough is the way to win the war.Can you make sense out of these official pronouncements?

Two more battalions beef up 4,000 soldiers in Sulu

After more than 60 dead in a week of clashes with lawless elements that were supposed to have been decimated a long time ago, Gloria Arroyo ordered the transfer of Army headquarters from Fort Bonifacio to Zamboanga City.

Esperon said MNLF is not an enemy.

Esperon says lapses led to their troops being ambushed by rogue MNLF elements which caused the death of 10 soldiers.

PILIPINO.

Sulu casualties ‘collateral damage’ — AFP chief

    2007/08/12

The setback suffered by soldiers in fighting enemy forces in war-torn Mindanao, particularly in Sulu province, where more than 20 troops have been killed since early August, was an incidental damage brought about by the military’s war against terrorist groups such as Abu Sayyaf, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. yesterday said.

There is a war in Mindanao and the soldiers are risking their lives, Esperon told a radio interview.

“Ginagawang gulo parati ang Mindanao at the expense of the Bangsa Moro people. [They stoke the fires of war in Mindanao at the expense of the Bangsa Moro people.] When Manila people wanted foreign forces (Balikatan Exercises) to return to the country, they had the Abu Sayyaf. Now, they want to transfer the headquarters of the Philippine Army in Zamboanga, (so) they opened another war in Mindanao,” Hasan said.

    ***

Remember, the US “planned” (hindi daw sabi ni Gloria) to substantially cut it’s military aids in Pinas?! Gloria and Asspweron is in desperate mood for another or renewed war in the region!

  6. chi chi

They’re confusing the issue para mas malaking AIDS ang ibigay ng US at the expense of the soldiers, and the civilians, and as Hasan and Gokusen said the Bangsamoro people.

The phoniest administration and military service at the height of corruption and hypocrisy!

  7. chi chi

“Basilan is now very secure”, sabi ni Asspweron. Who in his/her right mind would believe this phony general?!

  8. goji goji

We’re now left with no option but to launch a coup against the Arroyo government. All the legal remedies and constitutional solutions have already been tried unsuccessfully. Arroyo remains to be stubborn. I call on all the freedom loving soldiers, from the highest ranks to the lowest, to join forces now and change this government before it’s too late. We cannot afford to see our fellow countrymen shed their blood all just because of this evil woman’s actions. Now is the time !

  9. chi chi

  10. goji goji

Abu Sayyaf or any Muslim rebel groups only number in hundreds. Why send thousands and thousands of soldiers to catch a few bandits? Are we fighting foreign invaders? It’s simply a Police matter that requires Police solution, not military action of such magnitude.

RE: MILF forces to be gathered in Basilan town-Esperon

It seems like a refugee camp. I think the MILF fighters won’t allow to be herded like a cow just to satisfy AFP chief General Esperon’s strategic hamletting plan or militarization in the countryside. The corrupt Arroyo regime wants to transform MILF stronghold and villages into no man’s land. This madness must stop.

  12. goji goji

Diego, the Muslim problems in Mindanao have been there since time immemorial. No government and President succeeded in solving the problems. Estrada came close to it until his ouster. It’s not a military problem or even religious conflict. It’s a social problem. Muslims in Mindanao have long been neglected by the Imperial Government in Manila. Their courage and bravery to protect their lands and families are known in history. Spaniards, Japanese or any group did not succeed in conquering the territories. These problems are compounded by the ill-motives and interests of the foreigners.
They want to grab the region by hook or by crook using the corrupt and evil Arroyo government to achieve this desire.
If this ongoing conflict is not stopped, it would become another Afghanistan or Vietnam. Let’s hope not…

  13. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Maybe it has something to do with the revival of mining industry in the Philippines. Mindanao is rich in mineral resources. The greedy mining capitalists want a bigger pie share.

  14. goji goji

Mining is just the many reasons, Diego. It has oil deposits.
Military strategically, it’s good for the foreign power to protect their military and business interest. Don’t forget that the multi-national manufacturing plants like Del Monte are based in Mindanao.

  15. Chabeli Chabeli

For Gloria to have been quoted as saying that “the war in Mindanao, which so far claimed the lives of 25 soldiers and wounded 10 others, is not an act of vengeance but a strategy to win peace,” against those who spread “mayhem” and “bloodsport” in the South.” She also said that “We seek peace with those with peaceful intentions. But we also seek justice for our soldiers, civilians and communities affected by this conflict. Our troops will prevail because our intentions are just and noble.”

It makes me wonder whether what Gloria means by her “strategy to win peace” is to nuke Mindanao to get rid of all the enemies. What happens to the civilians who will can caught in the crossfire ? Will Gloria, the Ass & Teodoro say that they were mere “casualties of war” ?

  16. goji goji

Chabeli, these evils have a ready answer concerning civilian casualties. The usual excuse: In a war, civilians being killed in cross fire is inevitable.

  17. If Esperon himself seems confused about who the enemies are, then why are the soldiers still following him and not just go on strike and demand that he be terminated to save their lives? They need not sacrifice their lives for the idiot and her cahoots who should be sent to the gallows not just jail as a matter of fact. The Hammurabi ruling — “A tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye!”—should apply to them! Grrrrrr!!!

  18. Goji: The usual excuse: In a war, civilians being killed in cross fire is inevitable.

    *****

Iyan ang katwiran ng mga idiot! Over in Japan, incompetence does not have any excuse. Someone or some people will have to be made responsible for any loss of lives, civilian and otherwise, especially when they are not fighting foreign invaders but mere hoodlums who should have been under the jurisdiction of the police and the court.

Filipinos should realize by now what kind of idiots they have placed in their government that they have not done anything really right and beneficial for their country and people, and how they try to stop those who know better and can do something like how the idiots stop a promising senator, who may prove to be the answer to all the problems of the Filipinos at the moment, from fulfilling the tasks, duties and responsibilities he has taken an oath to fulfill not just for those who granted him that mandate with their votes but for his country and people.

Yes, I mean Senator Trillanes. He should be allowed to work at the Senate by all means!!! Palabasin si Senator Trillanes!!!

4 years without any conviction! Ano iyan? Wala siyang kasalanan especially when we think of the fact that they conducted their mutiny against an illegal government!!!

  19. goji goji

It’s easier said that done. In the military, you follow first before question. Mrivera who I believe was once a soldier can confirm the above policy. In times of war, a soldier can be shot, killed, executed for disobeying orders from superiors. While it’s morally and legally wrong to follow unlawful orders, this is not often being followed in the military. Why do you think the Nazis committed those atrocities and murder of millions of Jews? I’m sure there’s a portion of these Nazis or German soldiers who were kind hearted but was forced to commit such acts in following orders. Likewise, members of then Japanese Imperial Army preferred to commit suicide than surrender to the enemies. Kamikaze pilots sacrificed their lives in obedience to higher command and the Emperor. Now, you tell those soldiers and ask them not to follow orders because it’s wrong. Come on…

  20. Chabeli:

These wars in Mindanao are said to have been deliberately done to prepare the island for the establishment of US and Australian bases there in defiance of the Philippine Constitution and even some special law that Estrada, et al were signatories. Kaya nga tinanggal si Estrada even with US help sabi nila.

Remember what the Magdalo said about the same operation in Lanao and even in Davao prior to election 2004. Kunyari manggugulo sila, then make themselves look like heroes and then fool the people to continue patronizing them.

Families of the fallen soldiers, civilians, et al should demand for justice. Dito tayo makakatulong ng mabuti kapag humirit sila!

What’s his name? Angelo Reyes ba iyon?

  22. Goji;

You’re talking of WWII. Patay na ang mga sundalong sinasabi mo. Modern Japanese soldiers are not as fanatic as those soldiers who were taught that the emperor was a god. Iyan ang hindi mo alam, I guess. Ang mga sundalong hapon ngayon think of soldiery not as a cult but as a profession, simply a job!!! Puede kang mag-strike!!!

  23. BTW, over in Japan, even bureaucrats join labor unions kaya iyong mga hepe nila hindi makahirit. They should also be encouraged to have labor unions in the Philippines. I, myself, encourage my staff to join labor unions.

  24. chi chi

I just thought that it’s really intentional for AT4 not to be allowed to bail/attend Senate sessions because of this new war of the evil duo.

Sigurado kasing hindi tatahimik si Trillanes!

  25. goji goji

Ystakei, thanks for your reply. But won’t you agree that we learn from history? A soldier’s obedience to command is still being practiced these days. In times of peace, the aggrieved soldier may be able to address his grievance but in times of war, they have no choice but to follow orders. The World War 2 and the ongoing war in Mindanao are not different. We don’t know what’s going on in the battlefield. What would a commanding officer do if his soldier disobeys when the fight is going and the lives of other soldiers are in danger?

  26. goji goji

Regarding labor unions, ystakei, I don’t know about in Japan, but in other countries these labor union groups are fronts of organized criminal syndicates. In the early days (maybe also now), the unions are being controlled and dictated by syndicates like the Mafia. In the Philippines, many of these labor groups are fronts of the militants and enemies of the state whose goal is to overthrow the government. They continue to do this whoever the leader or president is. It’s more of ideological motive than anything.

  29. goji goji

Why Ramos is not saying a word? Because he might be part of the grand conspiracy. He did it in Edsa 1 & 2, why can’t he in this current conflict in Mindanao? Remember that Ramos is a West Pointer, an American boy.

JOLO, Philippines–General Hermogenes Esperon Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff, said an assessment has uncovered “lapses” that led to a Thursday morning ambush by Moro rebels that left 10 government soldiers dead.

Esperon said no road security was provided for the 11 soldiers from the 33th Infantry Battalion, who were waylaid in Maimbung town while transporting supplies to Jolo.

    – – –

  32. gokusen gokusen

Private First Class Abdulhari Bittong was surprised when his team emerged in front of the house of MNLF Commander Habbi Jeili at around 5 a.m. on Aug. 8.

Bittong was among a group of soldiers from the 33rd Infantry Battalion who was sent on a “highly sensitive mission” to Parang, Sulu.

At the predeparture briefing the night before, the troops were told by their commanders that they were to raid a lair of the Abu Sayyaf in Barangay Sampunay.

Bittong said they were clearly told that the targets were Abu Sayyaf leaders Albader Parad and Doctor Abu.

“I was taken aback because our objective turned out to be the house of Commander Jeili,” he said.

As it turned out, Bittong had no time to figure out why the group was sent there.

    = = = =
you know who is kumander habib jeili they killed? he is very respectable man in that place and very old man pero makikita mong inirerespeto siya ng lahat lalo na ng civilian…sampunay walang abu dun!

  33. goji goji

And Gokusen, the worst part of these senseless raids and attacks is that the government will again blame those to other groups other than government. If they’re found out to have committed the crime, they would say it’s “lapse of judgment”. If soldiers are killed, it’s “security lapse”. Lapse, lapse, lapse…

  34. gokusen gokusen

Pfc. Muhamil Hassan, another member of the team wounded in the fighting, backed Bittong:
“When the Marines clashed with armed men in Indanan, we were called in for the mission to Parang against the Abu Sayyaf. But it turned out that our [targets] were members of the MNLF.”
Hassan said he thought the MNLF and the Abu Sayyaf had joined forces. “There were reports about the two groups merging,” he said.
But MNLF interim chair Hatimil Hasan said that if there had been a merger, Abu Sayyaf members would have been among those killed or wounded.
He said the reality was that all of those killed and wounded were “bona fide members of the MNLF.”
“No one from the Abu Sayyaf was killed or wounded. Those killed in the encounters were members and a commander of the MNLF. We lost seven comrades, they are martyrs,” Hasan said.
    – – – –

  35. gokusen gokusen

Ustadz Habib Zain Jali, MNLF spiritual adviser and chair of the Bangsamoro Peoples’ Congress in Sulu, said some of those killed were MNLF pioneers.
He said Jeili, who was in his 60s, did nothing unlawful before the Aug. 8 clash, and was inspecting his men when the soldiers came and opened fire.
“He went out, along with his son and two others, but a burst of gunfire greeted him,” Jali said.
Hasan described the military’s version of the Parang clash as a lie.
“They were lying through their teeth in labeling the MNLF fighters as Abu Sayyaf bandits,” he said.
    – – –

The MNLF’s Hasan has another version of how the violence started:
On Aug. 6-7, soldiers shelled the camp of MNLF Commander Khaid Adjibun in Sitio Marang, Barangay Buanza, Indanan.
Before the shelling, Adjibun and some of his men left the area after monitoring heavy military deployment.
Those left behind retaliated and wounded two of the soldiers.
“Then Task Force Comet plotted another attack. The next target was the MNLF camp in Sampunay, which had been untouched for a long time,” Hasan said, adding that Jeili had been running the camp.
He said other MNLF members had tried to come to Jeili’s aid but the military had positioned soldiers all over the place.
“Our fighters could not penetrate the area because all the exit and entry points were secured [by the military],” Hasan said.

Most people cannot still distinguish between MNLF and MILF. Many think they are one and the same group. So, if one group gets into trouble and commits a crime, the other group also gets blamed. It’s good we have friends like Gokusen explaining the background of these two groups. It’s only now after learning from him that I come to realize that MNLF doesn’t receive any material help while the other does.

Lets not fool ourselves anymore. Other countries adviced us not to go into any war anymore. They know we dont have a chance at all. We were never in the offensive. The enemies are. The generals are trying hard to fill their quota of cadaver bags. With the kind of hotheads we have, its better to capitulate now to stop senseless killings. I believe that small kid I asked at Jolo pier why they dont stop the war and he said, they will stop as soon as the army surrender. Our soldiers are trained for urban warfare against unarmed foes. Not against afghan vets. When did we ever win a war or skirmish in the south? Perhaps its high time to transfer the AFP HQs, the Navy, the Army and the Airforce in Sitangkai or nearby it so they can be always on warfooting. And transfer Malacanan there also. That will stop the protests here.

I wonder!

  53. Come to think of it.

gloria (unhonorable president of the republic of the philippines), do you think people believe on you? (no one except your cohorts). you don’t need war to win “peace”, don’t follow the footprint of your dictator bush, (bush never win the war in iraq neither).

if you are determined to win “peace” particularly in mindanao, deactivate “war” (as this is the root causes of corruption) and activate “honest governance”.

In an earlier interview over ANC, MNLF spokesman Almarim Tillah said the group’s leadership may declare independence in Mindanao if the government fails to implement provisions of a peace agreement signed by the Moro group and the government 11 years ago.

Tillah said Muslims in the country will support an attempt by the MNLF to secede if the provisions in the peace agreement are not implemented.

“We have been tricked since day one, walang lokohan (Let’s not deceive each other); if you want this country not to rebel anymore, please give us justice. That simple justice is the implementation of the peace agreement of Sept. 2, 1996,” Tillah said.

“As long as the Muslims in the South are not given the justice due them, we are entitled to divorce in Islam. We’ll go for independence. I want to say it very clearly here in no unmistakable terms; the Muslims in this country are prepared to go independent if this government, in this political administration, and those before and even in the forthcoming administration in 2010 will not give us justice. We will now go for independence,” he added.

For his part, Teodoro said that instead of going to the media, rebel leaders should go through the proper channels, including joint peace panels or the International Monitoring Team. He said all issues regarding peace agreements should be resolved internally.

International monitoring team…hahahaha patawa..all issues regarding peace agreements should be resolved internally?

The MNLF said its members were involved and that it had asked the Organization of the Islamic Conference to help stop the fighting.

“We informed the OIC of the current situation through e-mails and a fax direct to Jeddah,” said Hatimil Hassan, the MNLF deputy head and an elected member of the regional legislative assembly in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Tillah said the Bangsamoro people have waited for more than a decade for the realization of the peace accord. He added that some members of President Arroyo’s Cabinet do not want to talk peace.

“There are elements in this government that do not want peace in the South. They are anti-peace. They do not want Muslims to take off. We do not need this government for our sustenance in the Muslim areas. We have all the rich and vast resources,” he said.

He said the problem with the government is their “military formula” in Muslim dominated areas. He said that since the time of Spanish rule, government troops were always stationed in Mindanao to quell Muslim forces from uprising.

He said increased military offensives against Moro rebels in Mindanao would create a “no-win situation” for both sides.

In a separate interview, Tillah said the best formula in addressing the Muslim problem is effective socio-economic delivery of services. He said that there has not been any national policy for the Muslims since the peace agreement was signed.

“This is the Bangsamoro policy, we don’t have it until today. I was hoping this peace agreement that was signed and to be implemented can now be consolidated to be the core reference point for coming up with a policy for the Muslims in this country,” he told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

He said that this would be urgent to prevent the “on again, off again” eruption of hostilities. He described the situation as counterproductive and would lead to more loss of lives.

He said normal trade in the region cannot continue because some farmers and fishermen could not even harvest their produce after abandoning areas affected by military offensives.

He said the government should consider releasing Misuari to work on the drafting of the Bangsamoro policy. Misuari is facing criminal charges for leading an insurrection in Jolo, Sulu in 2001. With Paolo Capino, Reuters

now teodoro will tell to joint peace panel with the international monitoring team..eh sino ba nakikialam dun eh di ba unang-una na malaysia..eh sino ba ang nagsabwatan sa pagkakakulong ni maas (nur misuari) eh di ba ang rehimeng gma at ang pamahalaan ng malaysia?

    Gokusen,

Pardon me, what is Malaysia’s interest here, except of course with the Sabah?! Please enlighten.

  62. gokusen gokusen

The 60-member IMT has been monitoring the implementation of the 2003 ceasefire agreement between the MILF and the government. Aside from Malaysia, the team also includes representatives from Brunei, Libya and Japan.Peace talks between the 12,000-strong MILF and the government, which is brokered by Malaysia, have been stalled since last year due to disagreements over the issue of territories..
..but they don’t work with mnlf..imt acknowledging milf, while the oic without misuari’s presence in the peacetalk then they will not push the tripartite meeting.

  63. goji goji

Chi, Malaysia is not only after keeping Sabah (they will never give it away) but control of the region. There are lots of Filipinos in Mindanao migrating legally or illegally to Malaysia at an alarming rate. Sea pirates from both sides are still rampant. Malaysia fears about their sea borders and infiltration of Filipinos to their country. Malaysia has so much at stake in seeing to it that the region remains or becomes friendly to them.

  64. gokusen gokusen

National Security Adviser and acting Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales flew to Malaysia to formally ask officials there to look into the incident.

Malaysia is the third party facilitator in the peace talks between the Philippine government and the MILF.

    that’s it chi….

The Malaysian government and the corrupt Gloria Arroyo administration may have conspired to weaken the Moro secessionist movement via deceitful divide and rule tactics. Why? Mindanao independence will spill-over Sabah. The federation of Mindanao, Sulu, Palawan and Sabah as independent state was then the goal of Sabah Chief Minister Tun Datu Mustapha Harun. Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi and Tun Mustapha supplied arms, money and training to Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). Malaysia won’t allow this to happen due to economic reason. Sabah and Mindanao are rich in natural resources. Malaysia cannot be trusted as peace talk’s facilitator.

  66. chi chi

    Thanks, gokusen and goji.

Ang Malaysia works with MILF while OIC with Nur.

  67. chi chi

Ka Diego, very enlightening input, thanks.

  68. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Do you believe that foreign powers are manipulating peace agenda in Mindanao?

  69. chi chi

I personally don’t believe that foreign powers manipulate peace agenda in Mindanao. It’s just Asspweron and other military officers who stand to gain from the forever war in Mindanao who are confusing the peace process there. And of course, the queen of “hello garci” who is actually the one being manipulated and not in a position to go against the commands of her garci generals to make their actions have a semblance of legitimacy.

The Pinas government doesn’t have the political will to pursue peace because of officials selfish reasons.

I pledge allegiance to the filipino flag and to the republic for which it stand…! bow!

  73. AK-47 AK-47

Never in my life have I seen so many Moslems in Manila as now for example.

What an injustice!

  85. goji goji

Following the above premise that some bloggers might be being monitored by the enemy (Malacanang) and later arrested, is it possible that there were those former bloggers who are not active today are now in the hands of the enemy? But let’s not be paranoid, folks. Ellen who owns this blog is well and alive. Why spread that unnecessary fear?

  86. AK-47 AK-47

    goji,
that’s only a precautionary meaures, at least our fellow bloggers in here are reminded.

“no fear”, “no retreat, no surrender!”… cheers.

  87. goji goji

I agree. But is there really such an Internet Brigade or it’s something created by some imaginative individuals? Scare tactics sometimes work especially for those who have something to be scared.

  88. goji goji

And if the same thing is being said over and over again, then it invites some suspicion as to the real motive of the one who’s saying it. Never heard of Internet Brigade…Barangay Brigade, yes.

  89. goji goji

Furthermore AK-47, it reminds us of this Gloria Arroyo (like Bush) who always plays the “terrorist” card. If you’re her enemy, you’re branded as rebel or terrorist. Bush has the same position. If you’re not for US or for the war against terrorism, you’re part of the terrorist groups. In like manner, if you oppose some heavy bloggers’ opinions, you’re branded as member of the Internet Brigade. Do you follow, AK-47? Makes sense? The point is let’s not spread fear.

  90. AK-47 AK-47

    goji says:
“In like manner, if you oppose some heavy bloggers’ opinions, you’re branded as member of the Internet Brigade. Do you follow, AK-47? Makes sense? The point is let’s not spread fear.”

reply: yes goji, i followed it, in fact i can read it from your mind, of course you were not branded as internet brigade! and the real motive of the one who is saying it is ” just a reminder “. okay men! i know we are united in here.

  91. AK-47,

If that is not a sign of mental instability/illness, what is? Ewwww!!!!

Reminds me of what her friend told me. Sabi daw ng mga steward ng PAL who have served the criminal during her gallivanting sprees overseas, pirmi daw sa harap ng laptop niya. Ang sipag daw. Sabi ko naman, siguro nagba-blog sa blog ni Ellen and using even male aliases para hindi mabisto! Ang galing manloko!
