Members of media and relatives of military officers on trial for their alleged involvement in the February 2006 aborted withdrawal of support from the Gloria Arroyo’s illegitimate presidency were surprised last week to see a light tank escorting the military truck that brought the junior officers to the trial venue. 
At the same time, we were amused at the sight of the tank. It’s actually cute. A gunner was on top of it. A 20 mm caliber gun jutted out of it. It was not the heavyweight type that we see in battle scenes or during military parades.
I posted it in my blog and regular visitors familiar with military weapons system said it’s actually a “support assault armored vehicle” One weapons expert said it’s for crowd control.
Aside from its amusement value, the presence of the support assault armored vehicle in the vicinity of Sierra Madre Hall in Camp Capinpin said a lot of things about the state of the Philippine armed forces.
That was a week after seven Marine officers showed up with shaven heads at the court martial trial “to sympathize with out fallen comrades and manifest our disgust for the manner by which the government and the AFP leadership is handling the incident.”
The “incident” they referred was the July 10 tragedy in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan where 14 Marines were killed in the encounter with elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, 10 of them beheaded.
Does the military leadership feel the outrage of the Marine Corps and they were worried the accused officers would do something to inflame it? Are they that nervous?
Surely it was not directed to members of media who have been shunted away from the entrance of the courtroom, which made ambush interviews more difficult.
“Just to intimidate,” one guest shrugged off the presence of the light tank.
They didn’t really have to do that. The distance of Camp Capinpin to Manila is intimidating enough: six hours round trip.
During the hearing, Frank Chavez, lawyer of Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda requested for the transfer of the trial to either Fort Bonifacio or Camp Aguinaldo, citing distance. Not surprisingly, the panel turned it down.
AFP chief Hermogenes Esperon detained the 28 officers in faraway Tanay precisely to make access to them by family and friends difficult.He was probably expecting that inTanay, the accused officers would be rendered irrelevant.
He may not be happy to know that despite the difficulties, those who believe in what the detained officers stand for have continued to support them.
Col. Ariel Querubin wrote a letter to those who are keeping the faith with them:
“When people align their personal values with correct principle, it is integrity. And when we professionally safeguard and live with it, it is dynamic idealism. It is not only found in bright minds and promising words but it is thriving in the threshold of actions – where it is through our acts that we give things life, which spells the difference!
“We greatly appreciate and express our sincerest gratitude on the noble gesture of trying to reach and touch our lives through your benevolence. Such humanitarian concern transcends through the barriers that separate us and even permeates through our consciousness that helping others, like us, is still possible.
“Braving the political implications of helping us, who are not only detained under the provisions and jurisdictions of the military but more so of political motivations, is a feat of a true public servant. It shall be a part of us from this day onwards.
“The materials and even personal effects – freezer, refrigerator, gas range, tables, chairs, electric fans, screen, books, magazines, food and drinks – pitifully alleviates our living conditions where we perceived as intentionally sidelined to oblivion by our superiors.
“In closing, let me quote a line from the book, Memoirs of Geisha: ‘We lead our lives like water flowing down the hill, going more or less in one direction until we splash into something that forces us to find a new course.’ The true essence of public service is our only direction, it may be that we have different circumstances. And again as the water seeks its own level, we fervently hope that after the journey through uncertainties, we will see each other again in the name of public service.
“In behalf of the officers and enlisted personnel under detention, again, THANK YOU, and may the Lord Almighty grant you the unselfish desire of your heart.”
Those 28 militaries who really shows the fight for the arm forces knows how hard to win their fights.but we, who knows in our heart we share with their plight.
but unfortunately, even the justice system here is not justice anymore as well as to those in the congress that majority are followers and in spirit of the present persona in malacanang.they create bills to support their vested interests.

Buti na lang andiyan si Ellen to bring back our faith in the more gallant and courageous members of the Philippine Armed Forces even when they are not free at the moment. Salamat, Ellen! I told my mother about these soldiers who have not turned into “sundalong kanin” yet.

Gokusen, are you with the military? Or are your relatives in the military? Obviously, you know so much about the military life and operation. The problems in Mindanao is the toughest to deal with. For centuries, no foreigners totally succeeded in controlling that region. The Spaniards did not quite succeed. The Japanese failed. The past government and administrations also failed. And today, it has become worse under this evil regime. Part of the reason is there is or are unseen foreign hands who have keen interest in that region.

Talaga. Number one of them are the lawyers. Many of them are doing it for free or at a special rate.
I mentioned it in an earlier thread, Frank Chavez donated 25 units of electric fan.
In the beginning the officers had to use mosquito nets when they sleep. Someone donated screen, another wood and other hardware materials. The officers themselves installed the screen.
The AFP’s budget for food for the court martial hearing is good only for the members of the panel and the trial judge advocate staff.
Good Samaritans donate snacks and drinks for the officers, their relatives and friends, their security escorts and members of media. Madami-dami rin ‘yun.

Kami sa Japan, Gokusen, bawal ang pulis in and out of polling places. The law provides that policemen do not get 100 meters radius from any designated polling places in Japan during election. Walang sundalong nakikialam sa pamamalakad ng peace and order kahit saang parte ng Japan as a matter of fact, and you see them only during natural calamities when they help in the rescue operation, not in keeping peace and order which is the main responsibility of the police. That’s the reason I make it a point to attend the hearings in Tanay. It’s heartwarming that at this time when many have chosen material comfort over principles, there are still men and women who are willing to sacrifice for what is true and what is honorable.

Kudos to the lawyers who have offered free service to these gallant officers. Sa amin iyan, Ellen, dismissed na ang mga kasong iyan for incompetence of the court. The federation of bar associations there should have done the protest in fact to dismiss these cases especially one that is obviously done to protect only the interest of a criminal they have not decided yet whether or not to make her legally responsible for all her crimes committed against the Filipino people.

Col Querubin’s letter comes from the heart. The idealism of these rare men in uniform is unbelievable! It is admirable to still find a few good men like them! Most of the men in uniform nowadays are just in status quo. Neither here nor there. Even the supposedly principled officers become tainted once they reach the top. We have a bundle of them now in the AFP! These few good men will certainly reap the rewards when the regime changes. We should all pray hard that tiyanak’s and asspweron’s injustice will not prevail over them!
Indeed, everyone pitched in to make the detention cell habitable! I heard how the 40 enlisted men who were incarcerated in Tanay first had no water and had to wait for the rain to wash their clothes and bathe. The big mosquitoes feasted on them day and night! When the families visited, there were no decent quarters. Now there are airconditioned rooms for their visitors. All, courtesy of friends and relatives who cared and still do!
Hang in there BRAVE MEN! When everything has been said and done, we know you will still be standing there for all of us!
How will the meager pay of these officers pay for their lawyers? The costs of keeping the families connected take a big chunk of what they have. Some of the officers’ children are now out of school.
Yuko, asspweron’s children with the late wife do not really share the dad’s philosophy. I heard that they actually disdain their father. Doesn’t this tell us how the AFP feels as a whole? To be led by an egoistic maniac must be tough even for the toughest of all our men in uniform!

A cousin in the AFP told me that Erap’s Foundation for Soldiers are discreetly helping the families of the jailed soldiers so that their children can still attend school. It is not unknown to the AFP higher ups but they’re playing it down to the extend of sowing disinformation that the money from the Foundation is part of the plunder case vs Erap. Other soldiers, even how meager their salaries are, are big in heart by helping as a form of sympathy to their comrades. Texting is their best means of passing information. Their apprehension now is if the HSA come into full implementation. even their celphones will be monitored.

am only familiar with his culture and people having stayed in lupah sug since middle 70’s and once in a while visiting the area everytime i go on vacation.

Yes Justice League , I also suspect sheila’s leaving PCIJ has contibuted to the current fate of PCIJ….But I also feel that a very hostile dicussion has turn-off a lot of people too.

gokusen, my apologies for doubting your story. my bad. i’m guilty of prejudging the authenticity of your statements. i just want to clarify that i never meant to ridicule those people who have been suffering or victims of the age old war in Mindanao. i live in Mindanao too (although in an area away from war) and my wife once headed and still in contact w/ an ngo caring for war refugees specifically the children. although, we have not experienced first hand the fighting, we know the effect and damage the continuing war had caused to its hapless victims specially those in the countryside. again my apologies and prayers for your safety and of the civilians in your area.

i agree with you Mrivera 101%. mabuti naman at sa yo mismo nanggaling yang salitang yan. i hope you will lead others here by example dahil marami dito yan ang gawain (incidentally, kasama ka rin dahil kagaya ni harion hinusgahan mo rin ako sa kabilang thread).
