Kasumpa-sumpa itong trahedya na nangyari sa Tipo-tipo noong Martes kung saan inambus ang mga Marines ng mga miyembro ng Moro Islamic Liberation Front ng pabalik na sila sa kampo galing sa paghahanap kay Fr.Giancarlo Bossi, ang nakidnap na Italyanong pari.
Labing-apat ang namatay na sundalo. Hindi lang yun. Sampo sa namatay ay pinugutan ng ulo. Mga hayop talaga.
Nag-order si Gloria Arroyo na lipulin raw ang may kagagawan ng karumal-dumal na trahedya. Sinabi ngayon ng military na magpapadala raw sila ng isa pang batallion (mga 500 hanggang 600 na sundalo).
Dapat lang.
Sa trahedya na ito, naungkat na naman ang mga kurakutan at katiwalian sa military.
Nakita sa kuha ng GMA TV na lumaban ang mga Marines kaya lang ang kanilang mga mortar shells ay hindi pumutok. Nahirapan pa nga sila dahil kinakailangan pa nilang alisin ang mga palpak na mortar shells bago nila pasakan ng panibago.
Kaya nagsalita kaagad si Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV sa pamamagitan ng kanyang abogado na gusto niyang paimbistigahan ang trahedya. Maala-ala natin na ang isang rason ng umalsa ang grupong Magdalo noong July 27, 2003 ay ang pagbenta ng mga bala sa kalaban ng pamahalaan .
Ang mga bala na yun ang ginagamit ng kalaban na pambaril sa mga sundalo. Alam ng mga matataas na opisyal ang anomalya ngunit hinahayan nila dahil kumikita sila doon.
Sabi ni Esperon, hindi naman daw nakapagtataka na may mga mortar na hindi pumutok. Maari raw na hindi maayos ang pagtago o storage dahil palipat-lipat ang tropa.

Ang problema, sabi ni Robles ay walang budget para sa storage. Paano kasi malaki ang pera ng AFP ay napupunta sa bulsa ng mga opisyal.

Bukod sa labing isang milyong Pilipinong nagluklok kay Sen. Trillanes sa Senado, nawa’y buong sambayanang Pilipino na ang sumuporta sa kanyang adhikain, ngayon, bukas at sa darating ng mga araw.

The Marines, magnificently trained and imbued with team spirit, must have incurred the shocking loss from fatal flaws. My reading of the incident is less of dud shells and deficient intelligence, although a factor, and more of demoralization and loss of trust in their leaders. When the Commander in Chief and her Chief of Staff removes proven and tested commanders such as Querubin and Miranda and throws them into the brig, then replaces them with overly ambitious politically oriented officers such as Allaga and the slum specialist Dolorfino, some of the elan is lost. This trait in the Marines is one of their superb qualities.

We could say many things about the debacle of the AFP in the latest Tipo-tipo firefight but it cannot be denied that those who died and wounded and those who survived deserved our prayers and proper recognition. Inspite of perceived failure of intelligence on the part of the commanders, it should be remembered with many no kind words can be said on the AFP officialdom and this administration. President Arroyo was behind the relief of Senior State Prosecutor Emmanuel Velasco from the Task Force Media Harassment and the order of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez to sack him was said to have been motivated by a call from Mrs. Arroyo for the Justice chief to get the chief investigator relieved, as he was getting too close to the truth of the involvement of the military in the abduction of an activist, reliable sources from the Justice department disclosed to the Tribune yesterday.
The President was said to have been under strong pressure from her military generals whose officers and men were alledgedly involved in the disappearance of the son of a freedom fighter. They asked her to have the case whitewashed as Velasco was also not seen by the generals as an ally of the military.
But Malacañang and the military are still not off the hook, despite the sacking of Velasco as a full-blown Senate probe is in the offing on the Jonas Joseph Burgos abduction-disappearance case, following the firing of Velasco.

I just read something about Allaga, the marine commandant who replaced Gen Miranda, one of the implicated Garci generals. It makes my blood boil. All these tiyanak generals know are to cheat, steal, lie and kill for the tiyanak. Never mind if all their men are demoralized! Inutil, inutil,inutil! What will you say now Allaga about your katangahan? Your men do not have any morale left. All their respected officers are incarcerated. Sa totoo lang, headless na ang marines ngayon. With Dolorfino, Allaga and the like, how do you expect the marines to do the best they can do? Poor 14 soldiers, they had to sacrifice their lives uselessly! How can tiyanak’s military deliver when the junior officers have very low morale? Corruption is showing its ugly face all over, poor performance of the guns and vehicles of our soldiers! I would have wished that the tiyanak and Assperon be chopped, inch by inch!
Do you still remember my neighbours’ favorite TV program “Combat”? That is all about a patrol composed of a few men that probes ahead of the main troop movement in enemy territory. Also, whenever there is a campaign, it is always covered with Operation’s Plan detailing what each element will do. It has an Intelligence Annex. That annex will give what dogs are along the route and even the color of the bitches’ eyes. In other words it tells everything what to expect in going and in coming back. Remember the Lamitan siege? A relief troop movement was waylaid by the hostage takers on R & R right in the middle of town. By watching the TV, the ranking officer was a company grade meaning he had only a few guys to have “surrounded” the enemy. Now the question is do we really have a sound military?

I agree that division level commanders up to commander in chief are ultimately responsible and should be held accountable. In my opinion if section, platoon, company and brigade officers new of this and did not even attempt to remedy deficiencies at their level after voicing their concerns higher, they should also be held accountable. If this was the case, then there’s a problem in the AFP Officer Corps. I also believe the same measure apply to the NCO Corps; the people responsible (I Hope) for weapons maintenance, training, and known for making things happen. I say there’s plenty of blame to go around from bottom to the top.
Going around blaming everyone in sight in the short term is all we can do, but this problem of deficiencies will be addressed and investigated and corrected, irregardless of the Current Leadership in the AFP and the Civil Government because the Secessionist Movement in Mindanao had preceeded this Administration and will not end in the very near as the dying Regime of Ms. Arroyo is not very far either, yet our Marines, Young and Brave will be forever dying and bleeding long after Ms Arroyo, Esperon and the Rest of them wealthy by-gones had long gone,if we don’t go out and have a Full-Blown inquiry about the Debacle of The Basilan, the Beheading of our Ten Mighty Marines. As what I posted in another thread, the well-equipped military men are those who were ordered re-deployed in Metro Manila particularly in the squatter and depressed areas by Gloria Arroyo. Her concern is more focused on containing any mass action that will go nearer Malacanang which could create the atmosphere of a besieged presidency. For this, it’s a given reality that she will not tolerate such situation and she will not hesitate ordering the soldiers to shoot rallyists and demonstrators.

The death of those 14 Marines is a sinister proof that there was not only mimanagement of the military operation to save the kidnapped Italian priest, Fr Bossi, the beheading of the Marines also showed utter lack of command competence – where was back-up support, air cover, gun cover, etc?
How long could the beheading have taken place without anyone from command even worried about the missing troops?
A battle taking place for NINE frigging hours with 10 troops being beheaded without anyone from command even getting remotely worried about the missing troops who were already gone for NINE BLOODY HOURS and more!!?? There should have been a search unit deployed when communications with the missing squad couldn’t be established even after 2 hours at most of silence! And to think that battle was raging for 9 hours with no back-up support?

Nine hours of battle and no back-up support in sight even during the last hour of that bloody 9th hour? What the fuck was higher command doing? Not so much the training here which is a problem – it is command negligence.
Even the most well-trained soldiers will need back-up support, gun cover, etc. when a battle is raging – and for hours at that! Obviously, there was extremely excecrable type of intelligence gathering that was fed to the deployed Marines in search of Bossi. But the bottom line is that the goddamn command was grossly incompetent on all levels.
Command knew that the troops were going to extremely hostile if not all-out enemy territory and that AMBUSH would be part of the game. Why then did he not send back-up support two hours after communications broke down. Believe me, a battle raging for 9 HOURS WITHOUT LET UP is long, very long – the least that the sleeping commanders back at command post could have done was to deploy all out back up support!
Ambushed? Of course, that’s part and parcel of being deployed in enemy territory! If commander didn’t get that possibility in his head prior to deploying the troops, he should have his head examined, better still – he should shoot himself now!

My dad used to have a huge private army in our plantation in Lanao against ‘invading’ moros – one of the units of that private army was a K-9 unit composed of ex-marines and dobermans. The moros were scared stiff of this unit.

Like it or not, the Philippines has 3 or 4 and maybe, even 5 major parallel armies with their own militarized camps, commanders and troops operating in the country namely: New People’s Army (NPA), Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest of the Muslim rebel armies and which also happens to be a breakaway faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and of course, the ineffective, inefficient but official Philippine Army.
Added to those, if you like, is the US Army that has an omnipresent Operation Enduring Freedom – Philippines contingent in the country (similar to Operation Enduring Freedom Afghanistan) and very soon, the Australian Army.
Not included are the so-called ‘private armies’, i.e., self-proclaimed criminal and best friend to Mike ‘Jose Pidal’ Arroyo, Chavit Singson’s private army, the Abu Sayyaff bandits and all the other terrorist factions or cells – armed to the teeth as they may be – that operate in the Philippines. Excluded too are the rebel officers and troops comprising the Magdalo Group within the Armed Froces of the Philippines.
To me an armed army of men and women, rebels or not, but with whom the Philippine government officially negotiates, either for “peace” or for other reasons, i.e., for an independent homeland, their own territory, who are in fact prepared to take on the official army of the nation is a parallel army, virtually at par with the official Philippine Army. No other way to put it really. Or in a country that seeks stability, law and order and peace, one cannot have other armies operating in parallel to that nation’s official army.
Over there in Japan, in the USA, in Australia and other countries, may hiya ang mga opisyal ng gobyerno, at nagre-resign sila kung may negative publicity tungkol sa kanila, o sa pamilya nila. Eh sa Pinas, tinawag mo ng lahat na termino na napakababa, wa epek pa rin sa makakapagal nilang mukha!
The existence in the country of parallel armies that are almost as powerful in terms of firepower, ‘military’ dogma and reach as the nation’s official army undermines not only the effectiveness of that nation’s official army but also makes it difficult for the official army to professionalize its ranks. Is it any wonder that the Armed Forces of the Philippines is still ‘unprofessional’?
Instead of abducting and killing militants and human rights activists, the issue of parallel armies that are hugely armed, capable of bringing down the Philippine Republic or dismantling it should be the first worry of the Philippine Army and this Gloria Arroyo-led government because militant farmers, human rights activists, outspoken priests and other individuals cannot realistically bring the Philippine Republic down but its parallel armies definitely can!
We don’t need the Human Security Act to get rid of these parallel armies that are effectively terror groups – what we need is a backbone, a strong, honest political will to institute political and economic reforms to prevent the bonding of evil-minded individuals into groups that terrorize our fellow countrymen.
I have no doubt that the terrorists that beheaded those Marines and killed more will simply use the paper on which this law is printed to wipe their asses with!
And to think that the MILF spokesman had the gall to say “Our troops wouldn’t have beheaded our enemies…”
In effect, this goddamn shithead has just officially declared the MILF an official army!
I suggest that the Navy (that is if the FOIC has balls to do it) deploys the Phil Navy Seals (SWAG)… and turn the MILF stronghold into an inferno; they have the equipment, the savvy and the training to turn the MILF stronghold into an inferno.

Who would have forgotten Captain Rene Jarque, the son of equally famous Gen. Raymundo Jarque? Before Trillanes and co, there’s the father and son first who fought corruption and injustice in the military. Capt Rene Jarque is a very bright young officer, a graduate of West Point who tried to fight corruption and institute reforms in the military. For his actions, he was subjected to various forms of harassment from his commanders. He got disillusioned and left the military. But even when he’s no longer with the service, he continued to fight for reforms in the AFP. Just like the others, I was shocked with his untimely death. Such a great loss. The country needs more people like him. A true officer and a gentleman.
Funny that over here, our government will never ever talk with the Yakuza and agree to grant them some concessions. A good government should never in fact negotiate with a criminal gang that I would consider the MILF, Abus, etc. to be for being a menace to the society in Mindanao.
I don’t remember for instance the Japanese government trying to negotiate with the Japanese Red Army even when they tried hijacking Japanese planes, bombing airports, etc. They were tagged and dealt with as criminals and instead of contacting foreign countries to try to go between, the Japanese police takes care of contacting the Interpol and other police agencies overseas and work with them in catching their leaders and members.

As in any organization or institution, you need a good and effective leader to make the good elements stand out. As in any organization, it is the one at the top that must show the right example.
Today, we don’t have a proud police force nor a proud armed forces. Much as the ones at the bottom of the totem pole want to be proud, how can they when their own handlers are the top are doing the wrong things?
It takes one rotten fruit to contaminate all the others in a fruit basket.
Give the police force and the armed forces something to be proud of: give them good leaders for starters!
There is nothing more destructive in a military organization than a dishonest, disloyal, divisive leader!
By definition, a military organization must be martial – it caters to discipline that if its leader/leaders are dishonest and divisive, they inflict indiscipline within the organization and with indiscipline comes moral vaccuum.
You can’t have a proud armed forces when that happens and when the armed forces aren’t proud, they are defeated by the enemies!
An armed forces needs victory to be proud but how can the elements of our armed forces be victorious and by extension proud when you have a surrender gang at the top?

I have no time today to analyse why the 180-degree volte face or sudden turn around by Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes
by recommending resumption of talks with the National People’s Army, one of the nation’s many parallel armies.
Off the cuff, besides the PR building tactic which I suspect is Esperon’s main reason for doing a poor imitation of the General Templar’s or known as the Tiger of Malaya’s “win hearts and minds” doctrine, I can only think of 4 reasons why this egghead of a general said what he said:
1) The Armed Forces are in no position to fight parallel armies on three fronts, i.e., Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao – particularly after the Philippine Marines suffered the worst defeat in the last few months in the hands of the MILF and its unrestrainable faction of amok-beheading troops
Besides, the MILF seems to have better mortar firepower than the official AFP troops (Even the people in Kota Kinabalu know that – read this March 2007 news story in a local paper in Kota Kinabalu published on line by Kyspeaks.)
2) Esperon is about to retire (less than a year to go) and he is fearful that with a record of extrajudicial killings being thrown at his door step, he is a likely candidate for trial for war crimes
3) He wants to try “to catch his enemies” flat footed: make the NPAs come to the negotiating table and then catch them (although I don’t quite see how he can do that… treachery with enemy armed combatants is tactically a lose-lose policy; besides, you need courageous generals to do that or Esperon is the least courageous military officer I know today!)
4) To play up to the SC gallery after the Supreme Court justices called a summit to end extrajudicial killings!

I believe that our foot troops are as courageous as the next foot troops of any modern Western nation’s army but they can only do so much with raw courage: 1st they need food, then they need good equipment, and of course they require good intel when combating enemies and most of all they need equally courageous and determined leaders.
One thing that can be said (this is where the difference lies between our AFP & the modern armies of Western nations): a regiment can fight and survive without its officers but that same regiment cannot fight and survive without its foot troops – every war relies on the military’s warm bodies to succeed and these bodies are the foot troops. Give these foot troops something to be proud of, decent treatment, good equipment, human considerations and they will win even the most difficult wars!
In the British Army, an officer fights for his troops even at the expense of his promotion (example General Dannatt); in the French Army, a high ranking officer will fight for his troops to be recognized as heroes; a good political leader seconded by his chief of staff must know that a proud armed forces is the life insurance of a nation!

I think the 1st of the reasons I posted above holds – Esperon knows the Armed Forces cannot face more than ONE front realistically. In other words, Esperon and Gloria are preparing for a protracted war with the MILF in the South.
The AFP is a tiny armed forces in terms of the number of enemies it has or the number of parallel armies it has to take on, NPA, MILF, MNLF, Abu Sayyaff and various odd other renegade insurgent factions. Too many fronts in an archipelago that’s a nightmare militarily speaking: 7,100 islands.
Realistically the AFP only has no more than 120,000 officers and men to fight all those parallel armies scattered all over the country.
Obviously, the biggest bulk of fighting will take place in the South with a formidable reserve of 300,000 potential men who will fight for a combined MILF and MNLF force (if a war is declared openly in the South, I have no doubt those two enemy Muslim factions will unite).
Realistically, out of the 120 thousand or so officers and troop number of the AFP, only a THIRD is truly, readily operational (third in reserve, third other in training). If Esperon wants an all out war with the South against a combined MILF-MNLF force, he will have to field at least a third of those third of the readily operational troops meaning at least 14,000 officers, men and women to active combat duty.
Or in a terrain like Mindanao, 14,000 troops won’t be enough. In the Falklands war, Britain deployed 15,000 troops to re-conquer the Falklands with a naval task force of 2 aircraft carrier and 35 fighter aircraft. Yet it took months to even begin to advance over a hostile terrain. Sure, the weather conditions in the Falklands were tougher than in Mindanao but the same conditions of combat were similar, pitch dark after a few hours of sunset, difficult muddy terrain, etc.
Esperon therefore has no choice but to keep his troops intact by declaring a cessation of hostilities against the NPAs.
Difficult situation for a poorly led Armed Forces whose troops cannot boast of a high morale and who furthermore do not have the right equipment to take on a rabid enemy.
Gloria has one option if really she wants an all out war in Mindanao: increase the size of the AFP by restoring the draft; problem is the draft (conscripts) will cost money.
I believe this is the time for her to court the NPA (heheheheh) and draft them to fight the MILF with the promise of amnesty, business and a home! Hahahaha!

Malacañang yesterday junked an appeal of Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales to defer the imple-mentation of the controversial anti-terrorism law, or the Human Security Act (HSA) of 2007, in lieu of petitions by the President Arroyo’s critics before the Supreme Court (SC) questioning the legality of some of the law’s provisions.
Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye, during a chance interview, said Rosales should just allow the government to implement the law.

This is the only Philippine blog (in Pinas that is) that continuously disappears from cyber radar non-stop then when it does appear, changes its appearnace from the warmer look it had to this cold cyber blue. When it happens, Ellen’s pic disappears as well as the other stuff found in the right hand margin.
Getting to be a real rough and tumble exercise trying to access Ellen’s blog but it doesn’t matter – we all have to be very determined not to allow the scalawags who are trying their damnest best to eject Ellen’s blog from cyberspace.
I am convinced that folks who are doing this sort of malevolent act are either of the two species 1) Gloria ass lickers who are either sex starved or brain dead or 2) worms or “anay” that even the chief anay Gloria wouldn’t even deign look at

Anyway, just read Caffeinespark’s blog courtesy of Manolo Quezon’s Online Struggle thread wherein she advanced a suspicion that the beheading of the Marines might have been inflicted by some of government troops themselves. (This kind of suspicion is bound to happen when there is absence of complete trust in the nation’s official army…)

I’ve just read Caffeine Sparks posts on his/her cyber exchange with another blogger about whether govt troops mutilated their own or not.
Caffeine Sparks cannot be faulted for his/her arguments re possibility that such a gruesome act may well be the act of some troops from our official army (PMC) but I refuse to believe Caffeine’s theory:
1) Very difficult to believe that elements of the Marines could inflict such dastardly act on their own even if for the sake of argument we could attribute a higher IQ than what they generally possess (assuming they’d done it to make it appear that the MILF were responsible for the more than pernicious act).
2) I tend to believe that in the heat of a battle in enemy stronghold or even afterwards, elements of the Philippine Marines couldn’t have had the material time to go on a beheading spree, not even if the encounter “lasted” 6 hours – after all there’s the rear and front flanks to still worry about – remember they are supposed to be in an enemy stronghold.
Having said that, I must admit that I’m a bit sceptical about the length of the fight, i.e., 6 hours? let alone “day long fight” that a PDI report stated, or 9 hours continuous battle that Philstar said in one of its reports?
That’s a very long, nay extremely long fight… To put minds at rest, it is of utmost importance for the AFP to conduct a board of inquiry and investigate every single element of the PMC platoons (2 I reckon based on my reading) involved in the battle that day and make a detailed, blow by blow account of the battle. It can be done. All it takes is a strong military will. (There must have been a lull in fighting… find out what happened during the lull!)
Three or 4 of the PMC elements who died were sergeants; in the Marines, a sergeant is usually considered one of the bravest of the brave – 4 dead sergeants among 14 casualties is a lot by any military standard. This alone should get the AFP going.
PS: Actually there were 5 sgts among the 14 casualties.

Totoo yan Magno – one of my first reaction in Quezon’s blog when DjB announced the beheading (before I read the news on line) was – where was back up support, where was air cover, gun fire support, etc that even if we say these poor Marines lost communication with command post after 2 hours of battle, where was back up support even on the 9th hour of the 9-hour battle?
I can’t imagine how the AFP can make Filipinos swallow that the fighting between 50 Marines or a few more and a bunch of MILF could LAST 6, 7, 8, 9 hours and that it was normal without back up support. NOT A CHANCE!
Where was the helicopter gunship support – that heligunship support could have altered the course of that battle!
Even one of the LONGEST encounters in Afghanistan recently involving British marines and the Taleban lasted only 5 hours non-stop with back up missile support arriving at the 4th hour!
A platoon of Marines (PMC that is) cannot sustain a running battle for 6 hours let alone for 9 hours without running out of ammo!
Let’s have an honest report for once!

The last time I visited Basilan was some 10 years ago (when Nur Misuari was in the good graces of FVR); I was escorted by a squad of Marines who were wary that in spite of the cessation of hostilities, there could be scalawags who might fire on our tiny group; one of them ‘instructed’ me on what to do in case of an eventuality – very instructive. The Marines may not be the most intelligent people in the world but when it comes to battle sense, they are some of the best – they would put Einstein to shame.

The Tipo-tipo encounter a staged one? That crossed my mind immediately after the incident. Why were there no back up operations. For 9 freaking hours! What was the “no-beheading” revelation of the MILF or MNLF? Or the conflicting number of dead bodies?
