THE military is conducting a survey to determine if its officers and men have negative sentiments on the likely senatorial victory of mutiny leader Antonio Trillanes IV.
The announced reason: The military leadership wants to determine if there are “dissenting opinions” because these could trigger “rumblings within the organization,” Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, chief of the AFP public information office, said yesterday.
Trillanes, a Navy senior grade lieutenant when he led the Oakwood mutiny in July 2003, is in 11th place in the official senatorial tally with almost 11 million votes but has yet to be proclaimed.
The military’s Civil Relations Service started conducting the survey last Wednesday and initially targeted troops in Metro Manila.
Bacarro said the survey was meant to “remove (potential) rumblings in the organization.”
“It’s part of our internal consolidation by informing them that he has been given a mandate… So this survey is a management tool to find out what’s happening on the ground and act on it, give appropriate response to educate the troops on the ground,” he said.
Bacarro said the survey would also send a signal to the troops that if Trillanes becomes a senator, he still has to face the pending cases filed against him arising from the short-lived July 27, 2003 mutiny.
Trillanes, who ran under the Genuine Opposition, is detained at the Marines headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig and faces a coup d’état charge before the Makati regional trial court and violation of Article of War 96 (conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman) before a military court.
On why the survey is focused on Trillanes, Bacarro said: “Because this is the first time that this happened, a former military who is now detained won.”
Told that the military should have educated its troops to respect the results of the elections, Bacarro said: “As I’ve said, this is the first time that this happened, such situation arose. He (Trillanes) has to be proclaimed but we can say this is a proactive measure adopted by the AFP.”
Bacarro said the survey did not touch on whether Trillanes should be freed from his detention. “Our target here is the sentiments of the soldiers,” he said.
On whether they see the victory of Trillanes as a problem, Bacarro said: “Not really a problem for the AFP. Actually, he can be an ally…He is a former soldier. He would know what the needs are of the AFP. He can push for some legislation that would favor the AFP.”
Bacarro sought to downplay reports that Trillanes enjoyed strong support from the military. He said results of the local absentee voting among soldiers showed Trillanes at 11th place with 17,742 votes.
Bacarro said the absentee voting results also showed there was no truth to Trillanes’ allegations that Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. directed military personnel to vote straight Team Unity.
A copy of the results showed eight TU candidates, three from the Genuine Opposition and an independent in the top 12 places. TU candidate Juan Miguel Zubiri was in the first place with 26,046 votes.

Now Bacarro is saying that Trillianes can help the AFP. MOST DEFINITELY! Because Trillanes is going to weed out the corrupt AFP officials.

How can troops have negative reactions to Trillanes’ victory, when their very ballots placed Trillanes at the top of the local absentee polls? I guess, the people had already resigned to the emerging truth that the AFP leadership, even the nation’s leadership, had lost touch with logic. The leadership is adding insult to injury by treating the citizens as if they also lost touch with logic.
For the AFP spokesman to serve the nation better- DON’T SPEAK (which, incidentally, is the biggest hit of a group called NO DOUBT).

MANILA, Philippines — With former Navy officer Antonio Trillanes IV all but assured of a Senate seat, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) now sees an “ally” in him and will “respect” his proclamation as senator, a military spokesman said Tuesday.
At the same time, AFP public information officer Lieutenant Colonel Bartolome Bacarro maintained that a survey on troop sentiment over Trillanes’ victory in the May 14 mid-term elections does not mean that the military was threatened by the detained ex-Navy lieutenant.
“As a former officer, he [Trillanes] can be an ally in the Senate. That’s possible. That’s very, very possible,” Bacarro told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo. “We are not threatened. There is nothing to fear. There is nothing to be worried [about].”
Asked if the military leadership was acknowledging Trillanes’ win, Bacarro said: “The AFP will respect that mandate.”

According to Abalos Trillanes can’t be proclaimed because mathematically puwede pa daw bumagsak si Trillanes at di manalo..They are saying they still have to canvass Surigao Del Norte (261,735) at 337,108 for Maguindao..these numbers are Registered voters and not actual voters.
I disagree with Abalos and based on my resources Trillanes should be proclaimed now:

based on these two remaining provinces, the trending shows for basilan that trillanes is ahead of pimentel and zubiri. For Surigao, Mig Zubiri is just ahead 10+ at ang hahabulin pa niya 385+…so mathematically mukhang ang labanan na lang ay zubiri at pimentel…talagang di ko maintindihan si Abalos sa reason niya. Kahit pa makuha ni Migz ang 237,000 sa Maguindanao, it is mathematically very impossible for Zubiri to overtake Trillanes.. The 700-800+ is just registered voters not actual voters.

Its obvious rumblings is heard why Trillanes won. I deplore the military now giving the soldiers an added political duty aside from voting on elections. Why would the soldiers now determine whether a senator deserves to work or not. Thats quality control.
Naturally, the soldiers wont say anything for fear of retribution. They know anything asked are like psycho tests questions twisted to determine if they still love their commander in chief or Trillanes.

What I see in the present situation is the AFP trying to make an atmosphere similar to the “TV Network rivalry of GMA7 vs. ABS-CBN”.
