Senator-to-be Antonio Trillanes IV of the Genuine Opposition does not disappoint those who trace the mess that this country is in to the illegitimacy of the Arroyo presidency.
Foremost, he never refers to Arroyo as “president”. Just plain Gloria Arroyo.
In his interview last Monday with ABS-CBN’s Ces Drilon, the first after he was granted post-election media access, he said he would work for the impeachment of Gloria Arroyo.
This categorical declaration, at this time when some of the opposition senators-elect are taking a magnanimous attitude towards the Arroyo, has elicited strong reactions.
It’s perfectly okay with me because I believe that no one who was ever elected by the people should hold the presidency. Given the many crimes against the Filipino people that Arroyo has committed, I believe such an undertaking is long overdue.
But I know of others who want a respite from wearying political hostilities. There is also the aspect that he was elected senator (I’m presuming that he will soon be proclaimed senator because he won) who would only be able to participate in an impeachment process if the Senate is convened as an impeachment court. An impeachment complaint is initiated in the House of Representatives.
Ces asked, given that the numbers in the Lower House do not favor of the opposition, would he still pursue his advocacy of Gloria Arroyo’s impeachment?
Trillanes’ reply: “The impeachment advocacy has been my campaign line because I believe that’s the only way for this country to move forward. We have lined up several legislative proposals which require primarily executive action. We can’t possibly expect these policies to be implemented by such a corrupt president. So I’m being straightforward to the people that we can’t do much as long as we have GMA as president.”
He said his winning the senate race despite all the odds – in detention, lack of funds, very few TV ads – was a statement from the people that they want change.
He sees the lack of numbers among the congressmen now as surmountable. He said his senatorial win broke several conventions in Philippine politics. “We have done practically the impossible. It shows it can be done.”
He elaborated how he is going to go about it. “If I can convince people to vote for me, I believe I can also convince congressmen to support impeachment. Or I can convince sectors of society to convince congressmen to support impeachment.”
In a separate interview with DZMM’s Anthony Taberna and Gerry Baja yesterday, he expressed the desire to be part of the Blue Ribbon and the Defense committees. I can imagine that through investigation in aid of legislation, he would be able to uncover more impeachable crimes committed by Arroyo.
Trillanes told Ces Drilon that impeaching Arroyo “is the only way to go. And I will keep on delivering that message. We can have change now, outside Gloria and move forward to progress. Or we can tolerate three years of what we have now with Gloria at the helm.”
He pursued the same line in his answer to ANC’s Ricky Carandang, who joined the interview from the studio. Asked about his legislative agenda, Trillanes replied that the legislative agenda he presented to the people necessitates the removal of Arroyo. He cited his anti-corruption position: “You cannot possibly expect and anti-corruption legislation to be implemented by a corrupt president. We have to be real about the situation.”
He said it’s the same thing in the areas of peace and order. He disclosed that he is in the process of conceptualizing a comprehensive Mindanao peace plan that will include conflict resolution, infrastructure development, enhanced economy and social services. “We can’t have this under GMA because GMA is the one responsible for the endless war in Mindanao. She had her chance. For six years, she mismanaged the country and right now, she can’t possibly say anything as regards the Mindanao war because she’s the one who perpetuated it.”
It will be recalled that when Trillanes and some 300 soldiers belonging to the Magdalo staged what is now referred to as the Oakwood mutiny on July 27, 2003, they disclosed the Greenbase documents which exposed the plan of Arroyo and her national security officials to control Mindanao for business interests.
To those who are concerned that he would not be a fair and impartial judge in case of an impeachment trial against Arroyo, he explained that impeachment is a political trial whose end is not criminal conviction but a change in political leadership.
“So the ultimate judgment is based not only on the evidence (but also) of whether it is in the best interest of the country for the accused public official to continue serving in government.”
Four years of detention has not doused the fire of idealism that we saw in Oakwood. I like what I’m seeing.
I believe it was Trillanes who ignited the people’s imagination in this election and keeps the fire burning until the cheating ways of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will finally end.

Trillanes should calm down a little bit. He should act like a statesman now that he will soon be called a Senator. I voted for him to represent deprived Filipinos like me and not just to impeach the president. Remember, Sen Santiago had a case against Pres Ramos for cheating, fraud, etc. still Pres Ramos finished his term. I see the same scenario with the sitting president. Trillanes should instead craft laws that will really make a difference in the lives of many deprived Filipinos. Frankly, Chi, the first time I saw Trillanes when I was translating those video transmissions from Manila during the Oakwood mutiny (magdamag iyon at walang tulugan kaya uminit ang ulo ko nang walang nangyari; suyan-suya ako doon sa isang sipsip ng governor ba o tongressman from Bulacan), I was not impressed until I followed up the case against him and his fellow mutineers. I began to admire him when read the things he wrote in his dissertations, etc.
I understood his sentiments because it was how I felt about the graft and corruption in the Philippines especially under this creep, who had grabbed power and continue to fool everyone with her lies. I told Ka Mentong in fact that I would like to help defer expenses for his trial and he promised to introduce me to his lawyer, because I believe that it was in fact a blessing in disguise for him to reveal and expose these crooks in his trial regardless of whether or not the judges there would be fair.
It is in fact I guess why they are delaying the trials of these brave warriors, because Trillanes and Company have a lot to reveal, and they would not want that to happen especially with journalists like Ellen and Ka Mentong there. Ito ang mga journalist na hindi umuurong sa totoo lang.
Then, this miracle of Trillanes running for the Senate happened, and it gave all of us the opportunity to prove in fact that given the incentive and opportunity, the Filipinos can and will do the impossible for truth and right.

As it already is, I heard & read that one of the top Senators who ran under GO is already playing footsies w/ Malcañan & saying to the effect that we should all move on.
We cannot move on while Gloria is squatting in Malcañan. She is, as she herself had admitted on Rizal Day in 2002, the one who has divided the nation. The solution is Senator Trillanes. I support him whole heartedly that Gloria must be removed from office & as he said in the Ces Drilon interview, “..I’m being straightforward to the people that we can’t do much as long as we have GMA as president.””

I actually wanted the impeachment to succeed when he was being investigated on the anomalies being charged against him. Nasira dahil sa ambition nitong unano na ito na mas masahol pa ang ginawa. At least, si Erap, puede lang kasuhan ng pagtanggap niya ng bribe doon sa kinana niyang si Singson. Bribery as you know is also punishable by fine and imprisonment but not by lethal injection. Ang problema ng mga kano, Nick, ay ayaw nilang mapahiya. George Bush has proved to be a great embarrassment and a cause of shame for ALL Americans, who have become much uglier than what they were during the Vietnam War. I feel sick when I hear all the marshmallow treatment of this other creep calling himself “President of the USA.” Hindi pa masipa ang ungas. I have actually supported the impeachment movement against Bush as a matter of fact even when traditionally, my family is Republican, and so are majority of members of our church.
Senator Trillanes’ victory implies a lot about the general sentiment. Two of the most important sentiments are:
– Majority wants Aling Gloria out ASAP
– The means to achieve the first one does not matter at all, be it constitutional or otherwise
Having a commanding majority in the Lower House does not automatically mean that there will be no impeachment. I believe that the Lower House (just like Joker, Kiko and Gringo are… Angara, I doubt) is a big Trojan Horse. Let’s wait and see…

THE Commission on Elections yesterday declared a failure of elections in Maguindanao province where Team Unity senatorial candidates scored a 12-0 victory.
Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos tentatively set the special elections on June 20.
The province has 337,108 registered voters.
The Maguindanao votes are crucial in determining whether Aquilino Pimentel III of the Genuine Opposition or Juan Miguel Zubiri of Team Unity will win their senatorial bid.
The latest Comelec tally showed Pimentel at No. 12 with 10,656,050 votes while Zubiri is at No. 13 with 10,524,036 votes or a difference of 132,014 votes.
Abalos said the commission decided on holding special elections after the special provincial board of canvassers “terminated” their tabulation of the provincial certificates of canvass because there were no municipal and city documents to count.
Abalos said the holding of special elections means the results from local to national positions will be “set aside.”
He said the commission has ordered winning and proclaimed local officials from Maguindanao to appear in a hearing on Monday to justify why their proclamation should not be disregarded.
He said Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol has admitted that there are no source documents on which the provincial COCs can be based.
“The basis for this (source documents) is these COCs and statement of votes coming from the different municipalities,” said Abalos.

But i was sad when politicians came over and that was it… i wish they could have stayed there for one more day…
It was, like i said, a short but glorious mutiny, but today, with Trillanes impending entry into the halls of the Senate, we are experiencing a very sweet revenge… probably the “Sweetest Revolution” we could ever do, so far.

I have no memory of The Guy Magsaysay. Most of my oldies (before they voted for Sonny) said he’s the best. My Dad is now saying he likes Trillanes between the two of them! Kasi daw, si Trillanes ay basta na lang sumulpot at walang-walang bahid ng pulitika sa simula pa! At walang ka-gimmick gimmick!

I share your optimism on Trillanes. Earlier, on June 5 at 2:34pm in another thread and partly repeated here (June 6, 1:32am), I posted this:
The perceived presidentiables who will fight it out in the opposition camp are Legarda, Lacson, Villar at Roxas.
I however have a strange feeling that none of the above will excite our electorate in the same frenzy as Trillanes due to his resounding victory. His winning as a senator dramatically changed the political landscape. I feel that once Trillanes is given freedom, more people will look at him as the right person, the name to reckon with for the needed change we are looking for which have been too elusive. It could be a strange feeling but who would think that somebody behind bars like Trillanes could run and win in a fashion defying all logic?
I respect your opinions, guys. But for me, I’d like to see Trillanes at work first. I think it’s still premature to have him eye the #1 executive spot at this time. Sabi nga sa Physics, merong potential pero meron bang kinetic?
We will be doing him a big disfavor since the TUTAs will start zeroing on him this early and that may only derail him from his legislative agenda. After three years of trying to fight off detractors, he may just end up achieving nothing. A failed senator will not make a good presidential candidate, diba?
I am confident that after three years as WORKING senator, he may have then learned the reins and be better armed against the usual back-stabbing, compromises, horse-trading and other political dynamics. Then we decide.
I’d like to see him succeed first as a Senator, then maybe I’ll check him out later if he’s ready to go higher. But he’ll have to keep silent of his higher ambitions. Yes, he may be popular but I’m sure there are many Gloria’s lurking in every corner.

Agree with you TT. Too early for Trillanes to talk about future ambitions. Too many personalities are already preparing for 2010. Villar, Roxas, Lacson, Binay are but a few of them. Trillanes has to prove himself in the Senate, become one to be respected in the like of Salonga, Diokno, Tanada, Aquino, Henares, Manglapus, to name a few.

Of course, it’s always logical to see first Trillanes’ performance in the 14th Senate. It will be a battle royale between the Wednesday Group and Cavaliers’ Club.
Although Trillanes has the tremendous popularity and potential to win a higher post, he needs to prove himself first. If beyond all odds, his incarceration foremost, he still passes a lot of worthwhile bills then I would know if he is capable to go a notch higher. The senate is indeed a training ground for future leaders. Maybe if he runs one more time and lands in the top 4 spots, he will then be ready for something bigger. All our eyes are on him now so he has to deliver. The more than 11 million Filipinos are giving him a mandate to represent their interests. He has to stand by them. Having three other PMA allies in the Senate is a big plus. His Big brothers will not fail him.

Samuel Mensah ang pangalan. Langya, mag-iinvest ng $200K samantalang bodyguard lang ni Rawlings. Pero nagbigay ng kundisyon na kung pwede daw imbitahan ko siya para doon siya personal na mag-aappear sa brokerage house.

Trillanes seems to be a highly principled person. Being such, I don’t think he would even consider running for higher office in 2010. We don’t even have to speculate on that…
As to the 14th Congress, I don’t see a battle looming between the Wednesday Group and the Cavaliers’ Club. I would even like to think that they’d be complementing each other in the quest to get Aling Gloria out before 2010.
It was nice to know that Mr. Isagani Cruz also sees the Magic 12 as 12-0 and not 8-2-2. If Aling Gloria gets impeached, we would only need four more votes from the other half of the Senate to convict Aling Gloria. We can start by keeping control of the AFP by engaging a proper qualified and respected Chief of Staff. I am hoping that Lacson being a former PNP chief together with the other three AFP senators will impliment some proper professional guidelines that will recognise the PNP as the mandated police authority in charge of public order, and the AFP’s roll professionally as one of defence from invasion; only, nothing to do with filipino civillians.
Trillanes would be like me – fighting the windmill. But miracles do happen, if and when he is proclaimed. When that happens, the thieves by the house on the pasig will be shaking in their boots. We will see…
Best if for the police to be a separate entity from the AFP as in bygone days when the police had more dignity and pride in the police force as the members of the old Manila’s Finest that produced policemen like Mayor Lim.
Filipinos in fact can learn a lot from the examples of the Scotland Yard and the Japanese police, which BTW was patterned after that of the Scotland Yard of UK more than a century ago but made almost perfect after WWII when policemen have become more effected in sending corrupt officials to jail although over here push them to do what is considered more honorable and morally and socially acceptable—suicide.

I think there’s an existing law, the Philippine National Police Reform and Reorganization Act of 1998. It need to be strengthened and as fully quasi-judicial independent body for the best interest of professional police force. The DILG Secretary and the PNP chief should have no business in dealing with internal affairs of the police commission. Both sucks due to they are political appointees. Gloria Arroyo’s all-out war against the Leftist group has prostituted the police organization. The police is now the forefront in the insurgency war instead of crime prevention and law enforcement function only.
This must be the only country in the world that have their guns pointing towards the communist. The fact is that the ‘cold war’ has been over some years now, it seems that the Philippine government and AFP are living in the past unlike other countries that are going forwards.

The said senator even complained about Magsaysay not being able to get anything even when he was given all the means, financially and otherwise, for as long as it would take for him to make good his investigations on those soldiers. This is in fact why when Cocoy talk of the Magsaysays I cannot help raising an eyebrow. In addition, I know of some complaint by a crusading priest who is having a hard time getting support from these Magsaysays to provide shelter for some deprived kids.

Trillanes’ win only confirms that the military leadership has lost touch with its base. It also proves that, given the freedom to choose, the rank and file would opt for a different set of leaders. This is also a reflection of the people’s sentiments outside the military establishment.
