Naghamon ang Malacañanang ng debate tungkol sa ekonomiya nang magpalabas ang Genuine Opposition ng isang advertisement sa mga diyaryo ng tunay na kalagayan ng ekonomiya.
“Call,” sabi ng GO. Ngunit ang pag-usapan ay hindi lang ekonomiya. Lahat na isyu.
Oo nga naman. Lahat ay magka-kabitkabit. Ang nangyayari sa pulitika ay may epekto sa ekonomiya. Ang pandaraya ni Gloria Arroyo sa eleksyon ay dahilan ng sinasabi niyang “instability” sa bansa. Kaya maraming pinapatay na mga aktibista at manunulat dahil maraming tinatago si Arroyo. Kapag walang tiwala ang mamamayan sa hustisya at batas, nakakaroon ng kaguluhan. Kapag may kaguluhan, bagsak ang ekonomiya.
Sabi ni Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, “Gusto ng mga tao makita at marinig ang mga plano ng mga kandidato para sa kanilang kinabukasan. Ayaw nila ng mga reklamo.”
Sabi ni GO spokesman Adel Tamano: “Gusto nila magdebate lang sa mga GDP at kung anong numero na kanilang pinapalabas. Ayaw nila pag-usapan ang mga totoong isyu na nagbabagabag sa sambayanan katulad ng “Hello Garci”, ang walang pakundangang pagpatay sa akbisita at sa mga journalsits, ang kurakutan sa pamahalaan.”
Dagdag pa ni Tamano, “Simpre lang naman para sa Filipino ang ekonomiya. Kung maganda, may trabaho sila at may spaat silang pagkain. Kung masama, marami ang walang trabaho at marami ang nagugutom.”
Ano ba ang sitwasyon natin ngayon. Bakit ba marami sa ating mga kababayan ang nagkukumahog mag abroad kahit sa mga bansang delikado katulad ng Iraq at Lebanon? Sado ng marami, “Ayaw naming mamatay na nakadilat ang mata”. Sa gutom.
Sabi rin ng GO, ayaw nila sa Manila Hotel. Dapat sa Plaza Miranda.
Ayaw ng TUTA (Team Unity, Tuta ni Arroyo). Sabi ng kanilang spokesman na si Ace Durano, “Gusto namin maayos. Ayaw namin ng sigawan. Kung sa Plaza Miranda natin gagawin, mayadong bukas ang lugar. Kahit maayos ang manood, baka may mga bastos sa paligid.
Sabi naman ni Tamano, “Dapat bukas sa publiko lalo na sa masa. Dapat sa Plaza Miranda para hindi lang mayayaman ang mismo personal makapanoong kungdi pati na rin ang mahihirap na masa.
Talaga. Ang pangit pa naman ng sound sa Manila Hotel.
Noong una, nang wala pang TV, sa Plaza Miranda talaga ang mga rally. Di ba doon nabomba sina dating Sen. Gerry Roxas at Jovito Salonga?
Ang paborito na tanong kapag may isyu ay, “Ma dependehan mo ba yan sa Plaza Miranda?”
Ang isyu ngayon ay si Gloria Arroyo, ang kanyang pandaraya at pagnanakaw. Kaya ba niya dependehan yan sa Plaza Miranda?
Public debate must cover all issues about governance and must be open to the public.

Si Aling Gloria nga ba ang Pangulo ng Pilipinas? Alamin natin kung kayang ipagtanggol ng mga limatik sa palasyo ang mga karapatan at kapangyarihang tinatamasa ng kanilang reyna. Mag-aabang ako…. sa Plaza Miranda!
Iyan ang hirap sa mga tauhan ng administrasyon ni Tiyanak, napakayabang maghamon ng debate at nang sumagot ng OO si Adel Tamano ay sila ngayon ang magbibigay ng mga kondisyones na kung ano ang dapat pag-debatihan! Ano kayo talagang hilo?
Lahat ng bagay na may kinalaman sa kasalukuyang kaganapan sa pamahalaan na dapat malaman ng mga botante ay dapat pag-usapan.
Ang mangyayari na naman niyan ay magdadala sila ng mga power point presentations na kung ano-anong graphs at statistics ang ilalagay na hindi naman makakain ng isang Juan at Pilar dela Cruz.

Nagpapakita lang na itong mga TUTA at ASO ni Tiyanak ay kapareho ni Tiyanak na magaling lang magdabog, magbarumbado at mambastos maliban pa sa magnakaw at magsinungaling!

The problem in peace and order (criminality, insurgency, Moro secession), human rights violations, political killings, jobs, over population, environmental disasters, poverty and legitimacy of Arroyo presidency and her corrupt administration. These important issues should be debated and what they can do about it in Luneta Park and broadcast nationwide. Quirino grandstand can accommodate hundred of thousands compared to Plaza Miranda. If security is the problem, then, Quirino grandstand can be easily secured. I remember presidential candidate Gloria Arroyo refused a public debate with the opposition juggernauts Lacson, Roco, Villanueva and less FPJ. She sets lot conditions before a public debate. Malacanang is doing the same old tricks to fool the people.
O ayaw pala nila Plaza Miranda, e di sa EDSA o kaya sa Malacanang Park! It was a big scandal exposed by Leonard de Vera, who was merely sourgraping according to my source when he was not given a part of the sales of the said property in Stockton that was sold twice with the same crooks involved!!!
That was how I came in contact with De Vera when my friends and I protested against the sales of Philippine patrimonies in Japan in 1989-92. It was a long struggle as a matter of fact, but at least there were those Senators who helped us in the said protest.
It is now the reason why the Pidals want the Senate scrapped. They want all the patrimonies in Japan sold to the highest bidders. What they probably are not aware of is a clause in the treaty (Thanks to those brave Japanese negotiators who wanted it added to the treaty after finding out about the graft and corruption and greed of Philippine government officials even then) that provide for Philippine nationals to sue their government even in Japan when the patrimonies are sold to non-Filipino or non-Japanese ESPECIALLY WITHOUT a national referendum. Fortunately, in Japan, there is a welfare program that will provide for legal assistance to impoverished Filipinos who will dare question any anomalous act of their government regarding the patrimonies in Japan, and there are many willing lawyers willing to fight for them even just for the free publicity!!!

We all know Gloria may have the physical courage of a piranha, particularly when she is surrounded by her baby or junior piranhas, but she definitely is a moral coward.
The candidates and party leaders debates are the highlights of every election. That is part and parcel of every campaign period, where voters get to learn the people they are going to vote to manage the resources of the nation during their mandate. And it should be done at least in a series of a few rounds covering all Issues that the voters might pose.
My suggestions on how it should be done in manner that could be useful in addressing all the issues of concerns are the fol.:
1. The venue could be any place acceptable to both or all parties
2. A moderator whose is known for impartiality would be appointed to formulate the rules and conduct of the debates and the participants representing parties.
3. Subject for debates should be culled from submission by a) voters b) media people c) opposition parties or candidates against another.

It was only yesterday, (Saturday 3PM Saudi Arabia time) that I watched the segment of Strictly Politics (a replay of the Tuesday show) with Adel Tamano as guest. He is a man to watch in the coming years as replacement of the old guards (old traditional politicians). He will be in the league of Chiz Escudero, Allan Peter Cayetano, Darlene Custodio and Sonny Trillannes – just to name a few.
He mentioned in the show that he was offered a hefty amount of money (plus other fringe benefits) only to join the administration band wagon. As Ms. Ellen, stated before, Adel’s mother, having friends in the administration was urging him to join however, being a man of ethics and principles, and aware of the poverty and corruption as the main factors the country is in this present state, he prevailed and finally joined the opposition.

AN OPEN LETTER FOR THE 2007 SENATORIAL DEBATE
Overseas Filipinos’ legitimate aspirations glaringly absent in electoral debates
First of all, congratulations! This letter comes with our deepest anticipation for the forthcoming debate billed as “2007 Senatorial Debate — Moving the Economy Forward,” in the forum organized by Philippines Inc. together with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, the Philippine Exporters Confederation, and the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry this coming March 14, 2007.
We are elated at the prospect of our future senators tackling the issues crucial to our survival as a nation and hopefully an opportunity to have a glimpse of their platform in moving our economy forward. We understand that the topics for the debate will include social issues such as management-labor relations, taxes, power and energy, peace and order, small and medium enterprise promotion, and foreign investments.
The topics of the debate are understandably geared towards the interest of the business sector as it undoubtedly affects the whole nation for better or worse. Unfortunately, legitimate aspirations and issues that matter most to Overseas Filipinos are not covered in the coming debate.
TODAY, as in EVERY SINGLE DAY, 3,000 Filipino families will be broken up so that their parents or older siblings can work abroad and bring food to the table. Overseas Filipinos now numbering close to 10 million comprise 10% of the nation’s population, scattered in at least 192 countries toiling under the scorching desert sun or bitterly cold winter. Some of them work in different levels of position and in various sectors: from domestic helpers in Hong Kong to high technology experts in Silicon Valley, California. Overseas Filipinos suffer family separation with dire social consequences, leaving communities that are mired in poverty, continually sliding into the abyss of desperation with no hope in sight. In some countries, they live in constant fear of being kidnapped or hit by bullets like in the case of Nigeria, Iraq, and Lebanon while women are subject of physical and sexual abuse.
In 2006 alone, the Central Bank of the Philippines officially recorded remittances at S$12.8 billion; that is, equivalent to almost 15% of our gross domestic product (GDP). This figure excludes substantive remittances made through informal channels as well as goods and services sent by Overseas Filipinos throughout the year. Assuming an average family size of 4 to 5, and that 4 million of the 7.3 overseas Filipinos are able to remit regularly, it might be said that about 16 to 20 million Filipinos are able to benefit directly from overseas labor migration. In general, remittances are often described as “the new form of development aid” and they are “the biggest source of foreign inflows” surpassing foreign direct investments (US$ 2 billion in 2006) and official development aid.
In addition, there has been a trend towards the repatriation of remittances, resources, as well as skills and technology, beyond what directly benefits Overseas Filipinos and migrant families in the form of diaspora philanthropy. It is an indication of an individual’s or group’s economic achievement or an expression of a sincere desire to contribute to uplift economic conditions of the Philippines to which Overseas Filipinos and migrants may wish to return to and retire in the future. These resources have gone into various community projects of needy and depressed areas in the country.
The Overseas Filipinos’/migrants’ achievements in terms of fueling the Philippine economy in the concrete form of remittances and diaspora philanthropy translate into a substantive political clout as a group or sector. At the same time, this sector represents the big consumers of products – communications, travels, nostalgic products (patronizing Made in the Philippines products), housing, insurance, food, luxury products, etc. – of the various business enterprises which are organizers of this debate. The Overseas Filipinos are de facto the biggest investors in our country and while direct and portfolio investments fell dramatically in time of financial crisis or when conflict arises, remittances generally increase. However, behind these billions of dollars are hard-working men and women who left their homes to earn a living whose regular remittances have become a lifeline for millions of poor people. Perhaps, it is not reasonable to request that our legitimate aspirations and our voices be heard, in the context of advocating for the necessary reforms and influencing public policy that directly affect the lives of millions of Overseas Filipinos, their families, and the country as a whole.
As we specifically challenge the candidates to include and articulate issues directly affecting the migrant sector:
1. We want to hear how our senatorial aspirants will tackle the issue of lost opportunities and wasted resources that could have been channeled towards development measures to spur economic growth with job-generating industries for the blighted communities we left behind.
2. We want to know how our senatorial candidates can help in formulating relevant enabling legislation for transparent and cohesive policies capturing a share of remittances for development in recognition and appreciation of the positive contributions of migrants to the development of our dear Philippines whilst also addressing the rights, interests and welfare of migrants before, during and after migration.
3. We reiterate what is described in the attached Migrants’ Manifesto for Issue-based Electoral Contest: “We challenge those who want to become legitimate servants and leaders to articulate a concrete and doable developmental plan aimed at the Filipino migrant workers around the world. We pledge to support legitimate servants of the people running for any public position who aggressively promote the interest of our sector We pledge to support legitimate servants of the people running for any public position that aggressively promote the interest of our sector on the issues we have previously enumerated in the manifesto.
It is sad to note that our policy makers are more focused on deploying greater number of expatriates to toil in foreign lands while big business conglomerates keep us in awe with bigger malls and extravagant media blitzes that only perpetuate a consumer society but lacking the positive trickle down effects on large scale job generation. Thus, missing out on the opportunities for the Philippines to be propelled out of the bottom ranks of the thriving Asian economy.
Lastly, while we see the issue of the opposition candidates on the need to debate the Garci scandal, vote tampering, impeachment, and other hot issues of the day, we want to hear a cohesive electoral reform on how we can have a clean, honest, and highly transparent electoral contest, and clear workable commitments to which we could hold parties and candidates accountable should they be elected to public office. Scandals used for grandstanding and garnering votes that will only be sidelined only to resurface next time around with different personalities involved is not solving the problem but only exacerbate a flawed electoral system that needs to be revamped in the first place.

We are supportiing Koko Pimentel to represent the OFWs in the Senate, and will promote him in Japan. We do not need any neophyte especially endorsed by a die-hard Pidal supporter.
Koko may not be an OFW, but he surely knows the sentiments and needs of his fellow countrymen, regardless of whether they remain in the Philippines, or work and reside overseas. Besides, his father, Nene Pimentel, is a friend and an advocator of the rights, etc. of OFWs, and we feel therefore that Koko is the best person to represent the overseas Filipinos worldwide.

AN OPEN LETTER FOR THE DEBATE
Overseas Filipinos’ legitimate aspirations glaringly absent in electoral debates
First of all, congratulations! This letter comes with our deepest anticipation for the forthcoming debate billed as “2007 Senatorial Debate — Moving the Economy Forward,” in the forum organized by Philippines Inc. together with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, the Philippine Exporters Confederation, and the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry this coming March 14, 2007.
We are elated at the prospect of our future senators tackling the issues crucial to our survival as a nation and hopefully an opportunity to have a glimpse of their platform in moving our economy forward. We understand that the topics for the debate will include social issues such as management-labor relations, taxes, power and energy, peace and order, small and medium enterprise promotion, and foreign investments.
The topics of the debate are understandably geared towards the interest of the business sector as it undoubtedly affects the whole nation for better or worse. Unfortunately, legitimate aspirations and issues that matter most to Overseas Filipinos are not covered in the coming debate.
TODAY, as in EVERY SINGLE DAY, 3,000 Filipino families will be broken up so that they so that their parents or older siblings can work abroad and bring food to the table. Overseas Filipinos now numbering close to 10 million comprise 10% of the nation’s population, scattered in at least 192 countries toiling under the scorching desert sun or bitterly cold winter. Some of them work in different levels of position and in various sectors: from domestic helpers in Hong Kong to high technology experts in Silicon Valley, California. Overseas Filipinos suffer family separation with dire social consequences, leaving communities that are mired in poverty, continually sliding into the abyss of desperation with no hope in sight. In some countries, they live in constant fear of being kidnapped or hit by bullets like in the case of Nigeria, Iraq, and Lebanon while women are subject of physical and sexual abuse.

As far as the Filipihos in Japan are concerned, a lot buy their underwear from the 100 yen outlets, more like the 99 cents stores in the USA.
No fancy brands except when they buy fake bags with Gucci, Coach, etc. tags. They’re more practical, I guess. Kundi baka lalo silang magutom!!!
