Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile has resigned as chair of the Pwersa ng Masa party of President Joseph Estrada, citing displeasure over the United Opposition’s choice of candidates. But he remains a member of PMP.
Senate sources said Enrile’s resignation could have been triggered by the inclusion in UNO’s senatorial line-up of lawyer Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, son of Senate minority leader Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, and Tarlac Rep. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Enrile had a falling out with Sen. Pimentel about two years ago over the revised value added tax, which prompted the former to quit from the minority bloc.

Over at the administration camp, House majority leader Prospero Nograles and Pichay (Lakas, Surigao del Sur) said former opposition senators Tito Sotto and Tessie Oreta are not welcome in the administration because they could be opposition “Trojan horses.”
“Who does she think she is, Helen of Troy?” Nograles said of Oreta.
Nograles said accepting the two “oppositionists” in their senatorial line-up would be awkward.
“It may not be publicly palatable and possibly not politically consumable. But again, politics produce strange bedfellows because there are no permanent friends, no permanent enemies, just permanent political interests in this kind of game,” he said.
Pichay said he could not stomach even the idea of campaigning for the two former senators.
“Ano ba kami, gago?” he said. “They are Trojan horses. What kind of politics are they playing? Noong nasa line-up sila ang oposisyon, sigaw sila ng sigaw ng cheating, lying and stealing tapos sasama sila sa ticket namin?”
Supporters of Imelda Marcos, meanwhile are pushing for her inclusion in a unity senatorial slate being worked out by the administration, presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor said .

chance despite Cory. He could have been a statesman in the mount olympus of Philippine politics but he bungled it, not because he was a bastard, but probably repeat probably because he did not know how to love his country. He is a guru trapo, a few notch higher than de venicia.
Elle, Oreta and Sotto’s bolting Angara’s LDP was long expected, Angara is like a plague and no one wants to be seen near him no one is negotiating with his official party. He is even invisible to Erap nowadays.
What I find odd is Oreta’s reported joining the NPC which almost everyone knows is Danding’s personal lobby organization that calls itself a political party. The Aquinos and the “other” Cojuangcos to this day believe Danding had a major role in cousin-in-law Ninoy’s death that’s why I was surprised to read the news. Oreta won’t stay long in there and before you know it, she’s back in Erap’s fold. Gloria’s allies all know that and it’s exciting to see where these things would end up in. Equally thrilling is their plastikan and paranoia over trayduran.

It’s really crazy merry Philippine politics, another entertainment extravaganza in our country aside from entertainment itself. That’s why there are more and more movie actors entering in politics. They are almost the same craft. They are all acting. In this regard, I would like to post once more my understanding of things about politics:
1. Political Science – The science of interfering in public affairs.
2. Politics – The art of obtaining money from the rich and votes from the poor on the pretext of protecting each from the other.
3. Politician – A goon with the wind.
4. Political Platform – A stage constructed entirely of springboards.
4. Political Campaign – A war in which majority shoots from the lip.
5. Politicial Appointment – A job in which the work consists of getting the job.
And after getting elected, they go to:
1. Congress – A body of men brought together to slow down the government. It is a place where a man gets up to speak, says nothing, nobody listens – then everybody disagrees.
2.Committee – A grouping in the Congress consisting of congressmen and senators that keeps minutes and wastes hours.
3. Committee conference – A meeting of congressmen or senators who singly can do nothing. but who collectively agree that nothing can be done.

Nasabi ko na isang post ko sa ibang sinulid, for convenience lang ang paglipat ni Tito Sotto at Tessie Oreta sa NPC. With Ed Angara not running anymore, ayon sa kanya, LDP is finished. So, anong gagawin ng mga kapartido, lumipat sa isang accredited party to have some bargaining power. UNO is only an umbrella group to house various parties against the administration. At the moment, wala pa talagang isang buong opposition to have a common stand. We’re in a multi-party system. Ganyan din naman sa administration. Iba-ibang partido sila kaya ang KAMPI is recruiting more to their sides to the consternation of Lakas with JDV at the helm.
Matagal na ang alitan ni Enrile at Pimentel sa dagdag bawas. Then Enrile was eased out as Senate Minority Leader by Pimentel kaya nag wishy-washy na si Enrile posturing as in independent but sitting as chairman of Erap’s PMP which is allied to UNO.
But whatever it is, the objective is to get the majority in the senate, if possible 12-0 against gma’s ticket in this elections. Otherwise, all what we’re saying and writing here will go down the drain going to the murky river by the palace.
A friend who happened to know somebody close to Mayor Binay text me last night that the latest they gathered, this is what appeared in the UNO’s ticket:

3. Pangilinan
4. Lacson
5. Loren Legarda
6. Tito Sotto
7. JV Ejercito

They’re still in the midst of discussion who should be considered between the also rans like Koko Pimentel, Sonia Roco, John Osmena and Trillanes. Tessie Oreta is definitely out because of Noynoy entry.
My bet for the remaining slot are Koko Pimentel and Trillanes.
Of course, this is an unconfirmed report from an unauthorized source. Don’t believe me. Ipinoste ko lang as anybody can make their own guess or list.
Meanwhile, it’s getting to be a crazy and merry go round until the final list out from the contending camps.

There is nothing we can do as to who will run in the next elections. The best we can do is to vote wisely and if possible, closely guard our votes. Overhaul COMELEC! Let us push for the electronic (computer) voting system. We can not afford to wait one month (the shortest time) for the delaration of winners. Moreso, we can not afford to wait at least three (3) years for election protests with the COMELEC to be resolved. Let us move forward!

What can I say, but the old man must be off his rockers? I feel sorry for Enrile because he could have been a good politician indeed, and though he could have made mistakes patronizing crooks, his accomplishments as a brilliant statesman could still have saved him a niche in the Philippine political hall of fame.
What I cannot understand is how he can be as sourgraped as the two Erap’s friends, whose joining his enemy’s ticket can be his doom, and a reflection of his sagging popularity with the Masa actually no longer hopeful that he can save them from their miseries when he cannot even save himself. Talk of “ang taong nagigipit sa patalim ay kumakapit!” Suicidal? Maybe, but let’s hope for the best that they have learned their lessons not to vote for the trapos.
At least, we know UNO is doing a great job presently, something like shifting the flour to produce a good cake. We know that Binay for instance is sacrificing a lot great of friendships in trying hard to produce an ideal team for a new voting public with better taste, and definitely, will not vote for the trapos and basuras they have been voting for for decades!
Heaven help them! Filipino voters should not even be bothered by these balimbingans, but take note not to vote for these balimbings, etc. Time to get rid of them for good, even consider such boltings as Sotto’s and Oreta’s as good riddance!
Meanwhile, Oreta should not rely on the Marcos supporters’ vote. Baka naghihiganti lang iyan. I doubt if Imelda has forgiven his brother, Ninoy, for maligning her!
Time for Enrile to bid dirty Philippine politics goodbye. Filipinos who know of what he did good for his country will surely remember him sans the extra-curricular activities! 😉

Im sure you have hit the nail on the head. full of cheating & lying from the top right down and in between to the electorate who is even willing to be prepared to be bribed for his vote to the highest bidder even though this destroys our democracy and communities.
Every year without fail the Comelec will introduce new rules to be followed, as if they don’t already have the mandate, qualifications and rules from their previous elections. We know why, this time around they now say they are limiting (or is it eliminating) independent watchers to observe the counting of votes. Do Comelec think everyone is so silly not to know why they are making these new rules. Every other country has rules for their elections and these same rules are used time and again at each election.
Why is it we need to change the rules for each and every election whilst the electorate are demanding a transparent election. The Comelec are the one’s commissioned to see that the elections are indeed transparent so whats their game.
Again, only in the Philippines, but its not good enough that Comelec do whatever they want un-challenged. The Chairman sits under a cloud of doubt because of the Garci scandal but he has the cheek to try to smile his way out of it when interviewed on television. Mr Chairman we don’t trust you to protect the vote of the electorate, got it!

You said it. I was actually thinking the same way. Danding was no politician, just a shrewd businessman. You bet, his party is there merely to lobby, but the crooks would align themselves with him for the money, even a lifetime guaranty of not getting hungry as long as they remain faithful to him, he will take care of them, ala-Pacman who has guaranty of a lifetime of bliss from SMC.
I would not go too far, though, of accusing Danding of having to do with Ninoy’s death although it may be possible because of his US connection, not necessarily his connection with FVR, et al, who were likely working for those who want Ninoy dead to pull down Marcos. That was indeed dirty politics, and the Filipinos caught in between for their own gullibility, etc.
I’m trying hard to stay out emotionally speaking but oftentimes, I cannot help detaching myself completely because of blood relations with some major players in this dirty Philippine politics. I have nothing in fact to be worried about, not even family holdings that my siblings and I try hard to pay our obligations for as prescribed by the law, but for the sake of the Filipinos in my wings over in the Land of the Fluctuating Yen, I am here to stay.

You’re getting wrong info Joeseg. Recto is not included because there is a strong opposition to his inclusion. For one thing, I know the UNO leadership is intact and composed of men who have had their share of the balimbingans and have learned their lessons. Maghintay na lang muna tayo to prevent them from getting confused themselves. Let’s stick to the determination of all not to patronize the trapos. OK ba?
Let’s pray that the majority of Filipinos will not fall for the third party pampagulo gimmick of the Pandak. Watch out for the parties with names of vegetables, etc., and then the balimbings! VOTE STRAIGHT UNO!

i agree with you completely, comelec modernization is long over due. pero sino bang nakikinabang dito sa mano-manong bilangan kundi iyang mga trapo na may PhD sa dayaan at gulangan. naging canvass watcher ako for 2001 and 2004 elections. and boy, usad pagong ang bilangan. sa municipal level pa lang kulang na ang tatlong araw, pagdating sa probinsya, isang linggo kang maghihintay ng mga coc’s mula sa mga munisipyo. paisa-isa ang pagdating. mas marami pang oras na nasasayang sa paghihintay. kaya’t kapag mahihina-hina ang bantay, dahil sa puyat at pagkaburyong, ang daling magpalit ng numero, kung minsan isang zero lang, talo na ang kandidato mo.

Machine voting or not, pareho din iyan. Mandaraya rin iyan. I don’t actually go for this fondness for these voting machineries. They are no guaranty to clean elections as a matter of fact. Yabang lang iyan! Look at what is happening in the US. At least, over there, a number of good people are finding out that honest election depend more on the will of the people participating in it to keep it clean.
Japan for one does not depend on these machines to insure a clean election. It is in fact a matter of will, not machine!

i agree with you, ystakei. hindi rin natin maaasahan ang mga counting machines na iyan kung ang mga magpo-program at magoopereyt ay mga kurap din katulad ng mga nakaupo sa comelec ngayon. mas madaling mandaya with these machines, maglagay ka lang ng dispalinghadong program dyan, ayos na ang buto-buto para sa mga mandaraya. palitan muna ang mga nasa comelec bago tayo mag modernize. mas mabuti, patalsikin muna si bruhang mukhang daga para mapalitan ang mga galamay niya sa lahat ng opisina ng gobyerno.

Regarding poll automation, last year while I am not yet blogging here, I wrote Sen. Richard Gordon who’s spearheading the senate bill on this matter. My letter was also published in the dailies and allow me to post it here:
TAKE A HARDER LOOK AT AUTOMATED ELECTIONS
While I am for the automation of election, I have some reservations about it especially because of some reports that cast doubt on its reliability. We should take a harder look not at the proposed automation law but the voting machines to be used.
A study has found out that the voting machine is vulnerable to fraud because it lacks the audit mechanism or paper trails with which to verify election results other than what the machine itself reports. It is therefore open to error and sabotage.
Even the computer experts at the National Institute of Standard Technology in the United States have said “paperless voting machines.. essentially computers programmed to display ballot images and record voter choices in practical term cannot be made secure.”
If we may recall, a Filipino computer student was once involved in a major “hacking” incident that caused worldwide furor. For this alone, there is reason to believe that the elections could be manipulated not necessarily to favor certain candidates but simply to sabotage the democratic process of electing our leaders.

That is the problem with the opposition, no unity. Since the 2004 elections their division has not been resolved. It was also the very reason the Iglesia ni Cristo dropped the candidacy of FPJ and Ping Lacson. How can we trust them if they themselves can’t come up with a solution to unite everyone.
I suggest they include in their senatorial ticket the candidates who are known to be GMA’s critic. Iyong mga tipong hindi plastic, hindi gegewang-gewang. Please lang pagpahingahin na si Ed Angara, wala siyang kredibilidad, pakawala siya ni bansot. I don’t think Pangilinan and Recto will help the opposition. Baka maging “noted” lang ang lahat ng pagsisikap ng mga anti-GMA.
If Sotto and Oreta will join the administration ticket, they won’t get my votes. You bet, Chabeli, the UNO is focused on giving the Filipino voters the ideal team. Let’s help them by having more faith and trust in the judgment of the people who have been painstakingly taking this task of shifting those volunteering to be in the dream team, but may be found wanting or not really qualified contrary to how for example Sotto, Oreta and Osmena boastfully size their own selves up. So far, so good. 5 Pa, and hopefully, they will not include any trapo.
Lots of prayers they need I guess to come up with the creme a-la creme! Our group in Japan have already our partylist choices, so the concentration in on the promotion of the Opposition set of Senators VS the vegetable group of the Malacanang Burot and the group of sourgrapes, whom now enlightened Filipino voters should forget about.

Believe you me, useless iyong mga automated machines na iyan. Napatunayan na iyan sa palpak na registration of voters noong 2003 for the presidential election. Maganda sana iyong idea, but as usual, implementation niyang palpak.
Over in Japan, we don’t go for automated counting kasi bawat precinct dito hindi sumosobra sa 500 household ang hawak at madaling magbilang. At saka hindi magulo ang election namin kasi isa lang ang ibinoboto for every seat available. Iyong pagpili naman ng mga judges of the Supreme Court for confirmation, ang method naman ay elimination by scratching their names out. isang scratch lang is enough to have a Supreme Court judge removed. At saka isang seat lang naman for example ang available bawat district for seats at the Diet. Kaya madaling bilangin at hindi magulo.
Sa Pilipinas, 12 sama-sama pa ang mga pangalan kaya nalilito ang mga tao. Bakit hindi na lang kasi papiliin ng most favorite nila at iyong mapipiling unang 12 ang piliing panalo. But then, I don’t know how that will work in the Philippine situation. At saka dito, hindi nagpapatayan ang mga tao para sa iboboto nila. Ang attitude kasi, binoto kita kaya magtrabaho ka. Sa Pilipinas, binoto niyo ko kaya paalipin kayo sa akin!!! Yuck!

In our past elections, we know candidates who seemed to have won in the voting but lost in the counting. For a moment can we set aside talks on candidates and look ahead to discuss the counting. Think of how the people was hoodwinked by its own representatives in Congress.

“On the part of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the en banc body may yet cancel all quick counts, as it hinted strongly that the National Citizens Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) may not get accredited by the Comelec in its bid to do a quick count in May.
The Comelec has also moved against the accreditation of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), a church-based poll watch body that wants to conduct its own quick count.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is counting on the PPCRV’s count to ensure an honest count.
In a TV interview, former Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See, Henrietta de Villa, distinguished the PPCRV count from the Namfrel count, saying that her council’s count would rely on precinct level votes, while Namfrel’s count is based on election returns.”
Can we put our hope, trust and confidence to PPCRV of Ambassador De Villa? Will the Bishops support her and the PPCRV? Does any blogger know if Amb. De Villa is still the immaculate Henrietta Tambunting (her integrity intact)who topped her STC (San Marcelino) Class in 1955? Is she now an apostolate of Gloria, weak-kneed like her Bishops in the CBCP. Will Minister Manalo Of the INK not block PPCRV’s accreditation through the COMELEC? Will PPCRV become another NAMFREL?

On my posting on Enrile (first comment above). A line I wrote was contextual: “not because he is a bastard…” Words change their meanings over time from negative to positive, from pejorative to praise like the word pimp and pimping which is now commonly used in the arts in North America as a worthy thing or activity.
In history, bastard leaders had been known for prowess and success (search google), that to be one creates an expectation of aboveness over others, even greatness and awe to the young. Enrile got the brains and the courage and rose from almost nothing.
That piece on Enrile, lest I be misunderstood was a piece of SAYANG of a person most admired up to his senate years. Even at this late hour, one more term as a patriot in the Senate can change his place in history.
Furthermore, there is a need to concentrate on protection of the vote once it has been made by the electorate. Its not a lot of good fielding a good candidate when you can’t protect the candidates vote. That was proved in the 2004 election results and now we have continued to suffer due to that defective protection of the ballot box and its contents.
You know, with the computerisation of elections in India working with such a large population, why can’t it work here. It cuts the amount of time required for a manual count and less time for the count. Maybe thats the real reason that Comelec seem to be pussy footing around with wanting 2years to ‘properly test a system’ wake up Comelec because we don’t buy that, not one bit. 2 years Waaaahaha!

Automation will not make Election any Cleaner, it could make the results known faster, and less chances of secret manipulation if results already known. But in the other Hand, Automated cheating is also hard to detect.
I had experienced countless elections in our case here, from our local, provincial, and federal, from the time when ballots were counted singly to the present when we are fully automated. Our Elections in all cases are just as clean when it was done manually as it is today when it is done fully automated. And it takes only a maximum of four hours to have the final results, that seems to be the only advantage of automation, instead of 12 hours in the old Manual counting and less personnel.

You may just blogged in here. If you will read some of the past postings, specifically yours truly, you’ll read the discussion on local politics. As a matter of fact, I have been going around to get the feel and reported somewhere here who, in my particular place, they will support in the local elections as well as the senatorial.
The concentration now in the blog is the senate because the final list is not yet out. But once it’s all set, it will also dictate the tempo of the campaign as the party realignment will also take place.
Before I forget, nakatungtong ako sa lupa kaya alam ko ang mga kaganapan sa kaparangan at kabundukan.

The expats may not be able to vote for the congressmen in their provinces or district of local residence, but they can vote for the partylist candidates. My group for example is voting for Akbayan or Bayan Muna. I am a foreign observer for Akbayan as a matter of fact.
Best thing for all to do now is guard the votes of everybody. I guess we need to gather Filipinos in Japan for a meeting to make sure that the Ateneans assigned to head/man the election cannot cheat again this time for the burots in the palace by the murky river.

Over here, counting of ballots by the precinct is done manually by staff of city halls in charge of the election under the supervision of the local home affairs bureaus (equivalent to local government I think over there), then the tallied figures are submitted to national affairs ministry (DLGU ang equivalent sa Pinas) for final tabulation. Walang COMELEC dahil hindi naman araw-araw bumoboto ang mga tao.
Walang dayaan because none of our bureaucrats is under the mercy and dictate of a politician, and their loyalty is to country and people. Mas mataas nga ang tingin nila sa sarili nila kumpara sa mga politiko sa totoo lang. Ganyan sana sa Pilipinas.
Dapat sinisipa nila iyong bastos na Fatso halimbawa na sobra ang yabang na akala mo siya ang may ari ng Pilipinas. I bet you, ang sinasabi pa ng loko sa Germany para ma-entertain ng mga taga bangko doon, “My wife is the president of the Philippines.”

Joeseg, Diwata, Yuko, I have defended Sotto in a previous blog not because of some personal relationship but beacuse I was firsthand witness to his anti-drug crusade of which I was also actively involved when I was in my late teens. Together with ex-Sen. Boy Herrera, he was a main sponsor of our projects and he did that way before he became QC Vice Mayor or that destructive privelege speech of then Senator Teofisto Guingona which turned out to be a dud (Ellen says so herself).
I also witnessed his generosity and how he helped some of the studio musicians in Magna Tech Omni and Cinema Audio where his company, Vicor and Blackgold recorded their vinyls (I was once guest musician in Tito, Vic and Joey’s Tough Hits series). From financial aid to kicking their drug habits, the musicians got Sotto’s help and are now living testimonies of how Sotto brought them out of the rut and are now productive and some are even famous composers and arrangers.
These experiences have made me conclude that such a person is a natural philantropist, and nothing can change that, not even when you switch political parties. Politics may have included him in its long list of victims wrecked by opportunism and eaten by the system where compromises are the standard, but that remains to be seen. He has stood his ground against the Midget, even if his loyal Kumpareng Joey DeLeon is married to a Macapagal. Maybe, he’s still hurting from the Vice Presidency that slipped from his hands when his runningmate cowardly downgraded herself from the presidential candidacy. He would have won hands-down against the vice-presidentiables in 1998 had the Donya chosen to slug with out with Erap.
Like Joeseg, I am keeping an open mind on Sotto. His moving over to another party does not mean he has abandoned the opposition, does it? It may be his strategy to get greater leverage for inclusion in the UNO ticket, he may also be a trojan horse as Pichay accuses, the possibilities are many. His new partymate Chiz Escudero IS with the opposition, and what could make it any different in his case? The campaign hasn’t even started and I’m almost sure it’s just a mind game he’s playing and still hopes to be included in the final UNO list after all. I’d rather have his name there than Pangilinan, Recto or Joker! In any case, the real Sotto will only be revealed (if he wins) after the vote of Senate President, for the moment, no one really knows where his heart lies. Maybe he’s not prepared to stand beside Guingona just yet. Let me be clear, however, if he comes on stage with Gloria raising his hand, HE WILL NOT GET MY VOTE!

Having worked at the Japanese police as interperter/translator cum investigator, I am anti-drug, too. In fact, I take it religiously being a member of a church that prohibits tobacco, alcohol, coffee and tea and other harmful things people are apt to put in their bodies.
You bet, you should not vote for Sotto in case he raises the hand of the Bansot for that is evidenced enough that he must have been just trying to build an image contrary to his real nature as when he tried to show he was a crime/drug buster!
Not being you, though, I will not even consider reviewing the record of this guy, whether good or bad. Contaminated na iyan. I’d rather promote the new faces and those who have shown some promise sans the good and bad publicities!
Still, I would love to hear more of your stories. I don’t know this Trinidad, but I sure sympathize with this guy. His constituents should stand by him against the hoodlums who call themselves policemen!

Yuko, Trinidad is perhaps the only City Mayor in Metro Manila, or better make that the whole country, who should reveal how he ended up with “unexplained poverty” in contrast to unexplained wealth. Well he may have made a small fortune as a brilliant lawyer but nothing much has changed (except maybe for his spouse/s). He’s not even bothered by his replacement, Alan Panaligan, unless more laws are twisted by the palace crooks to block his march to resounding victory come May.

He said negotiation rather than dictation is the better course of action in coming out with a unified ticket.
“As incumbent senators our track record speaks for itself. We have shown that we are fiercely independent and unafraid to speak our minds on controversial issues. We have shown that we cannot be dictated upon by Malacañang or other interest groups. Why then should we allow ourselves to be dictated upon now?” he said.
From Malaya today:
SEN. Panfilo Lacson yesterday said a boycott of the May 14 elections would only be worth pursuing if the opposition and civil society groups could muster enough support to declare a failure of elections.
“It’s a valid call. However, if we try to boycott and fail to muster enough support, we may not be able to forgive ourselves for propelling the administration candidates to where they should not belong,” Lacson said.
Lacson said a boycott move must be coupled by a strong wave of support from various anti-Arroyo blocs to force the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to declare the May 14 elections a failure.
Lacson was reacting to the call of University of the Philippines professor Randy David to boycott the elections, citing the lack of genuine reforms in the Comelec.

Lacson is talking sense here. Boycott is only good in countries like Japan where boycotting an election is taken as displeasure for the ruling party, and the Prime Minister voluntarily stepping down in respond to such show of disgust for his party.
In the Philippines, boycotting will mean more garapalan!!! I hope Randy David will reconsider. Boycotting the election can mean nothing. He should vote together with those who believe in him.
Boycott is an effective way of doing things but only viable in civilized nations.
