I got this message from an officer who was flabbergasted seeing AFP Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon in a suit during the thanksgiving dinner in Malacañang in honor of military officers and men involved in the killing of Janjalani and Abu Solaiman.
The CSAFP attending military occasions wearing “Amerikana”, not his service uniform. Wow, class!

It’s simple lang naman ang dress code… an active trooper in military service should be dressed in the appropriate military whatever during a military occassion, especially for the chief of staff of the military even if he is supot!
Kung ayaw niyang mag-change into a uniform for the kodakan, di huwag siyang sumali sa kodakan to show a bit of respect for those other troopers and not to shame the AFP vis a vis the world militaries, particularly when it’s published on front page of a major broadsheet.
Maybe he’s ashamed of the AFP because he’s turned it into bounty hunters for the Americans and for Gloria.

I know Peter Rodriguez supplies him and his family with Proton cars but by golly, why insist on a useless program?

Ellen, if the Philippines is really dead set on acquiring those old C-130s, they should and must ask Lockheed Martin for a 15-year guarantee.
The airframe of those 30yr old C-130s are extremely old and ‘worn out’.
If Lockheed refuses to provide that kind of guarantee, (which I’m sure they won’t given the age of the airframe), then Pinas MUST NOT DO IT or you risk to have flying debris all over – hehehe!

Aircraft of that age have a higher risk in terms of cost of repairs, upgrade, etc than a 30 year old naval hull.

After a day of exercises, they account for each and every new gadget used, no touch by Filipinos, not even when they fall down like those new choppers supposed to be tested for combat in Iraq. Sorry to shatter your impression of Gen de los Santos. He was assigned to the peacekeeing forces vis a vis the Tamuls (also in Indonesia???? not sure) because the Board of Generals then didn’t know where to put him – his classmates who were dominating the Board knew that he was useless, he was a bit simple (in the mind) so, when the job came along, they dumped him there to get rid of him.
Of course, the public didn’t know that and de los Santos was saved from being floated. And everybody thought he was great. His own classmates were laughing about him.
He’s lucky he got to the star rank.

PMAers are like the military mafia. They protect each other and can count on their mistahs who get to the top first to help in their military career.
For instance, all members of Class 62 who remained in active service till they retired from military service for instance, all became GENERALS with no exception. Class 62 who could boast of having had 2 chiefs of staff – Gen Boy Abadia and General Enrile – made sure that all their members serving then WOULD BE A GENERAL WITHOUT EXCEPTION to the detriment of some more deserving officers (the slots for a star rank for instance is limited to a certain number so that if one who is not deserving gets promoted, the next one who is perhaps more deserving has got to wait till the slot is freed, i.e., one officer’s gone to retire).
I remember two of the members of Class 62 who remained at the bottom of the list, one of whom (from the Air Force but I won’t mention his name coz, he was frankly a dear although a bit “simple”, i.e., in the mind) General Abadia made sure, they were gonna be promoted to star rank at all cost.
The one from the Air Force – classmate of Abadia and Enrile – actually failed the interview portion with then Brig Gen Arnie Acedera who was the lower classman (Class 63) but got his star first because he was close to FVR (personal pilot of his).
Acedera like to tell the story how he humiliated his upperclassman who was still an Air Force colonel. The poor guy was livid and kind and gentle as he was, used to curse Acedera whenever I reminded him of the story . Heheh!

And Jay, let me add that although they help each other, there are animosities too but that’s buried when unity is needed to show force. One of the PMA classes that hated each other or at least many hated 2 or 3 of their mistahs is Class 69. General Nazareno CAN’T STAND Angie Reyes!

This comment is not to defend Gen Esperon but I just want to explain and analyze the things that are seen in that group picture with the President and others.
1. Karen Hughes, Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs and adviser of US President Bush, arrived at noon time last 24th January in Manila. With her arrival, it is a part of diplomatic protocol for the US Ambassador to the Phil. to tender a Cocktail/Dinner Party at her Residence as Welcome Party for the VIP Guest on the night of her arrival. Gen Esperon, as the CSAFP, was invited to attend the said party in Business Attire (the usual attire as stated in the US formal invitation card). This party was scheduled just in time (or little earlier)with the scheduled dinner party of the President with the AFP oficers and men assigned in Sulo who were responsible in the killing of KJ and Abu Sulaiman last Wednesday night,too. So, Gen Esperon has to juggle his presence in these two important activities which are held at the same night. So, that explains why Gen Esperon did not have enough time to change to his military formal uniform fitting for the event in Malacanang.
2. Through my research, the party of US Ambassador Kristie Kenney and US Undersecretary Karen Hughes paid a Courtesy Call to the President in Malacanang on the evening of Wednesday, January 24 (after the US Ambassador’s welcome party at her Official Residence). They might have joined the Dinner Party with the soldiers.
3. Since it is a formal awarding dinner party for the AFP troops, the least that a soldier should wear as his uniform in this event should be the Bush Coat Uniform (formal attire with short sleeves). But, most of these soldiers don’t have such uniform yet due to their rank and place of assignment (which is combat/field assignment). And there was a time constraint for these soldiers to have their Bush Coats tailored in short notice. So, these soldiers had to wear their “Best Combat Uniform”, which is the one we see in the picture as the new Special Forces Battle Dress Attire. Only members of the Philippine Army Special Forces have this kind of uniform.
4. What is surprising is the attire/uniform of CG, PA, Gen Tolentino. He was wearing the General Office Attire (GOA)which is the uniform worn when an officer/soldier is attending to his office at the General Headquarters.
5. In conclusion, Everybody was wearing the Wrong Uniform for the event as seen in that picture.
6. There is no such thing as the “Best Class in PMA”. “Weather, weather lang yan”.
Black Knight, good excuse but I am sorry I do not buy it! Officers who are expected to attend multi-functions should always carry different attires in their cars. What are the assistants for? This function they are attending is a military function and as such they should be in proper attires. I think he just wants to sport his new Armani/Versace or the like. Whatever he wears, he is still the most hated AFP Chief who earned his position thru cheating for his master. It is not surprising, the loyalty of a DOG has to be paid with a big BONE! Whatever he wears though, he is still a first class bodyguard of the tiyanak. No amount of expensive clothing can make a rotten man look better. To most of the AFP soldiers, he is nothing but a prostritute chief. SAD but there are a lot of people like him in the force. For all I know some of them are in this blog! Enjoy your thrones because when the tide turns, it will be your end!
It is weather weather lang among the generals but the real good ones stay as good and the vultures are so obvious because they cling to power like there is no tomorrow even persecuting their own men to justify their end. These officers are the worst kind! The soldiers are not dumb, they are just waiting for the right time. It will come!

However (1) he should have refused to pose in a pictorial that he knewx would be published in a major broadsheet; it is very unlikely that he didn’t know that it would be published, he needn’t have joined the pictorial (2) if he agreed to pose in the middle of the valiant uniformed troops as their CSAFP, in civilian attire, he should have made sure that the pic would remain in the bottom drawer of the official archives.
All said, Mr Esperon committed a grave indescretion vis a vis the military – he was UNECESSARILY LAX. There was NO EXCUSE, absolutely NONE!
I’ve met many CS Pinoys and foreign, in that position, they couldn’t allow themselves slightest error particularly over something that could have been avoided, i.e., appearing in OFFICIAL pictorials with troops in active service… This wasn’t a birthday party – this was an OFFICIAL PICTORIAL that would reverberate the world over!
