House Speaker Jose de Venecia will announce tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 9) that the Senateless Constituent Assembly that he and his gang shamelessly railroaded last Thursday will not push through.
Malacañang sources said De Venecia was forced to back off because if he refused, Gloria Arroyo will issue a statement that she is not supporting the Con-Ass that will be convened on Tuesday. He would then be losing the support of Kampi congressmen, which would trigger more withdrawals.
Arroyo, the source said, got worried when the Iglesia ni Cristo told her that they are joining the opposition to the Con-Ass.
INC’s participation in the opposition to the Senate-less Con-Ass isolates completely Arroyo and JDV. The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, Mike Velarde’s El Shaddai, Eddie Villanueva’s Jesus is Lord Movement, and the Protestant groups have lambasted the blatant violation of the Constitution and called on their followers to join the protest actions next week.
The source said De Venecia will say that he is willing “to bow to the wishes of the people”. Or he can say that he had an “epiphany” just like St. Paul on the road to Damascus, a source sarcastically said.
The source said when Arroyo at first talked to JDV about not going through with his Con-Ass, the latter was adamant saying, “It’s now or never.” But he probably realized later that it would be a slap on his face if Arroyo would disown him publicly.
Another source said, JDV was also prevailed upon to spare Arroyo the “painful chore” of disowning Con-Ass which she herself had endorsed and campaigned for.
Arroyo was apprised yesterday of the real danger that the protest actions against Con-Ass would swell into another “people power” and cause her ouster.

What do you think of me Chi, a fortune teller or psychic? What many people fail to realize is that members of all religious groups are also citizens of the country. Therefore, they should be aware and take part in the political process and decisions even if there’s a separation of church and state. On INC’s side, majority of her members are the poor masses and these are the ones who would be most affected by the evil desires of Arroyo’s government. At the height of Edsa Tres, about two or three INC members were shot and killed in Mendiola by GMA’s soldiers. INC’s Manalo remembers that very well. INC has once again flexed her muscle by telling GMA directly that INC is not supporting the Con-Ass. That message was enough for JDV to back off. Now, our wish and hope is for INC to now join the opposition in kicking out this woman from the Palace.

Furthermore, INC’s plans are a bit obvious at this point. Manalo is now slowly distancing from GMA as a prelude to Manalo’s annointed presidential candidate in 2010. From past experience and all indication now that FPJ is gone, Lacson remains INC’s most favorite. Of course Erap’s closeness to INC remains to be very strong. He too was supported by INC ever since as a Mayor, then Vice and President. GMA also owes her throne to INC since the latter supported her all the way beginning as a Senator. Despite the frequent deletion of my posts, I think I’m going to stick it out with this group…at least until GMA is finally ousted. You might have noticed that INC always and often comes out with her position and decision much later. INC usually does this during election sometimes not releasing the candidates she supports until the last few days before election. Some say this is to avoid politicians from bugging Manalo while others say INC only goes with what the wind blows. Whatever the reason, we all must concede that this INC is a very powerful religious group.

INC has moles everywhere…inside Malacanang, government agencies, PNP and AFP. About dinuguan, my mother-in-law cooks that very well. I’m against eating it not because of the teaching in the Bible; but of the kind of food it is. It has no nutrional value. Please be reminded that it’s not only INC that doesn’t eat blood; even Jehova’s Witnesses and some fundamentalist Protestant groups. If you want to start a fight, start serving dinuguan to your INC visitor.

Miron, I think I have to agree with you. The rally should go on to make sure Malacanang doesn’t resort to some other evil plans. It’s like knocking out the enemy not just knockdown. Supporters of President Joseph Estrada and Fernando Poe Jr. since the other night have been playing hide-and-seek with policemen assigned to prevent crowds from gathering at the Edsa Shrine in Mandaluyong.

Even INC supported Gloria Arroyo last 2004 election; it does not necessarily mean she won the election. She won by massive cheating. INC block voting had no bearing in Metro Manila. FPJ won all Metro Manila cities and municipalities by landslide except Las Pinas. Bishop Manalo’s towering palace is located in Quezon City, M.M.
According to Malaya’s editorial, there are planned rallies for Tuesday and Wednesday, and other groups are still planning their own. BAKIT MAGKAKAHIWALAY PA? Kung pagsabay-sabayin e di baka higit pa sa milyon katao ang dadagsa at mistulang daluyong na di mapipigilan. Dapat magsama-sama paminsan-minsan ang mga grupo na pare-parehong opposition para sa final push. Tuloy mapabulaanan yung bintang ng iba na hindi magkasundo ang mga opposition.
Diego, I’m not interest in arguing with you about INC and its votes. FPJ’s victory in Metro Manila did not mean INC votes were not important to GMA. There’s one Barangay in QC called Barangay New Era where an INC annointed candidate could easily get almost 100% votes. That’s because majority of the residents in that Barangay are INC members. Why do you think Sony Belmonte won? INC supported him. INC has about 300,000 members in QC. Now back to Gloria, she cheated…no doubt about that. But if it were not for INC’s votes, her votes would have been much less. Political analysts and experts quietly conceded and whispered among one another that GMA actually won by only about 200,000 to 300,000 votes. That number was so small that could have ignited protests. To ensure that her victory was credible, GMA tried to increase her winning margin to one million to play safe and look good. Hence, she cheated. Had it not for INC’s one million votes, GMA would have lost even if she cheated. Why? Because INC’s one million votes could have gone to either FPJ or Lacson. The winner’s huge margin would be too difficult to counter and changed. That’s what happened to Erap. Her enemies tried to cheat him. There was Dag-dag Bawas. The late Cardinal Sin was always after Erap even during the campaign. The Makati Business Club and the elite did not like Erap. Uncle Sam did not favor Erap too. But then, Erap’s winning margin was so huge that he ended up as victor. Oh yes, INC also supported Erap; thus, INC’s votes helped Erap a lot. That could have happened to either FPJ or Lacson if only one of them was humble enough to agree to run as Vice. But as we all know, it didn’t happen.
I think INC block voting is a myth in Metro Manila. If it’s true that there are 300,000 INC members in Quezon City then Gloria Arroyo could won easily in Quezon City. I believe some INC voted for Lacson or FPJ. They followed their conscience. Who knows?
I believe there’s some truth in the argument that INC could have tipped the scale.
We’ve always known that INC delivers bloc votes and I somehow believe that INC’s (officious for the moment) stand may have had a hand in this but as Diego rightly said, the INC is not THE ONLY factor.
The congruence of several factors, i.e., Catholic Church with El Shadai, because they’ve decided to come out defiantly together for once along with INC’s implicit pronouncement that they would release a statement opposing the Con Ass attempt of Congress must have scared the living daylight out of Gloria and with reason!
She reckoned she shouldn’t push her luck too far with all those religious blocks together, she would be tempting the devil if she went ahead and supported de Venecia so her bravoura fizzled.

I do not also subscribe to the idea that it was another scripted God-Save-The-Queen plot. Whoever said Gloria was going to slay the ConAss dragon should have known better. Many congressmen have long conceded the elections in 2007 to the opposition and submitting themselves to a sure defeat means Gloria will not waste her, or our, money on their campaigns. She will instead invest on those who still enjoy local support despite being asssociated with her or use the money to buy support of the winning opposition candidates to maintain a comfortable majority. Or she may just keep the money to herself! Her ass is first priority, after all.
Another reason is that the congressmen never really got their part of the deal yet for their killing of the second impeachment case. Next year is the only time they can start collecting as it is only next year that their multi-million public works projects will kickoff. This year’s budget is just a reenacted one; what they got this year was the standard P40-70M pork. Next year’s include billions for the big-ticket, big-kickback projects Gloria announced in her SONA.
The third termers know that these will happen only after May as projects are prohibited 3 months before and during the campaign period. The only way they can dip their hands inside the cookie jar is by moving the elections to November.
Now, Gloria knows she can’t portray these Congressmen as the real “kontrabidas” or villains as she does not want to court their ire as her own survival will be compromised should JDV and his followers decide to dump her like shit when she starts to treat him like one.
The ConAss train is doomed, it either stops and play dead or go jump off the cliff.

When the troops approached the INC gate (one INC guard was shot and killed), some troops started to fall after being shot from behind. They were surprised that some of their comrades began shooting at them because not knowing they were INC members. After that incident, then DND Minister Enrile warned Marcos not to repeat it. From then on, Marcos and Manalo became the best of friends. INC supported Marcos for 20 years. The 1986 Edsa Revolt would not have succeeded so easily if Manalo ordered his flock to Edsa to counter the Edsa One forces. But fearing that his members might be hurt and killed, Manalo did not push through. In most of the pro-Marcos rallies led by then KBL, many were INC members who also belonged to KBL. I was told that Marcos even wanted to seek refuge at the INC Temple when Malacanang was about to collapse but Manalo refused.
During Cory’s regime, then AFP Chief of Staff Biazon instructed his staff to prepare a memo to be issued to all commanders to raid INC chapels for reported storing of high powered weapons inside the chapel compounds. Before the memo could reach the commanders, INC immediately got hold of the plan and the INC hymn was sung at their radio station DZEC. The playing of the church song was a message and signal to all members to gather at their respective locales. As a result, Cory’s plan to raid the INC chapels failed. You know why? The staff or secretary preparing the Biazon memo happened to be an INC member. Also at that time, Biazon made a remark stating he would finish off all INC members. Such statement angered Manalo and the members. There was a report that Biazon later apologized. In fact, Biazon was also supported by INC when he ran as Senator.

Diego, INC block voting is not a myth. It’s more of the members’ obedience to their doctrine that there should be unity among the members. They always invoke the teaching that God’s chosen people must only have one baptism, one spirit, one body, one faith, one judgment. Since voting is an expression of judgment, INC members believe they should also vote as one. They further explain that what is to God is God’s and what is to Caesar is to Caesar’s. As citizens of the country, they register to vote. But as members of one church and God’s children, they vote as one. They uphold this strong belief; thus, making most members obey. Do all obey? Of course not. Faith and obedience come into play. And do you know that other religious groups try so hard to imitate INC’s block voting but fail? Why do you think there are pastoral letters during mass? During election especially between Marcos and Cory, Catholic priests tiredlessly read pastoral letters asking the members who to vote. Their sermons were mostly against Marcos. This practice went on even until Erap’s time. Oh you should hear how the late Cardinal Sin attacked Erap in his sermons. Once, I attended a mass at Baclaran. During the greeting of “Peace be with you”, the priest told the audience: My brothers and sisters, when you say and greet “Peace be with you”, make sure the ones beside you are not Marcos loyalists. That statement turned me off. The truth is, INC’s one solid vote is the envy of many. They just cannot follow what INC does. Now to the question again if some INC members went the other way, of course some did. Some voted for Cory and Lacson or FPJ. I should be singing hallelujah about this piece of news, but the truth is I was so saddened and disappointed. Deep in me even if they railroaded it, I wished they pushed through with it. It’s not that I am advocating violence or bloody confrontation between the police/military and the people, but this event could be the turning point, momentous and decisive one. It could be the final performance of the glue and jdv. It could be the end of the line for both of them.
Whatever the circumstances behind their backing off, sad to say, the glue outsmarted all those against the con-ass. All the events during the last several days were just a show to test the pulse and temper of the times. She knew and felt that the patience and anger of the people were heating up and about to boil, and so before it reached the boiling point, she shut off the heat, and that’s about it. Senators reject JDV’s ConCon proposal
Senators on Saturday rejected the proposal of Speaker Jose de Venecia and pro-Charter change congressmen to help form a constitutional convention.
Senate President Manuel Villar and Sen. Sergio Osmeña III was reacting to de Venecia’s statement that the House of Representatives is willing to postpone for a “few days” plans to convene a constituent assembly on Tuesday if the Senate would support the House’s moves for Charter change by pushing for a constitutional convention.
Villar asserted that the Senate cannot be pressured into Charter change, especially without public sentiment.
“Ang Senado ay hindi pwedeng pressurin ng ganyan. Kami ay paguusapan namin ‘yan at hindi kami naniniwala na ang pagbabago ng Constitution ay dapat madaliin nang ganito at hindi pa kami sigurado kung ano ang gusto ng ating mga mamayanan dito (The Senate cannot be pressured [into Charter Change] like this. We will talk about it and we don’t believe that Charter change can be rushed like this and we’re not even sure what the public wants),” Villar told ANC.
Osmeña said the proposal is like adding insult to injury.
“It’s like after somebody rapes you, he now proposes marriage. And if you don’t accept the proposal of marriage, he will threaten to rape you again,” Osmeña said.
“We (senators) are not under the mercy, jurisdiction and thumb of the lower house,” he added.
Malacañang, meanwhile, lauded the proposal, specifically the provision that would allow next year’s elections to push through. A constituent assembly would have cancelled the May polls and extended the terms of incumbent officials.
“We hope that finally, through a con-con (constitutional convention) elected directly by the people, the advocacy for political and constitutional reforms can rally the support of the entire Congress and all sectors of society in a spirit of unity dedicated only to [the] best interest of the nation,” presidential political adviser Gabriel Claudio said in a statement.
