This statement of support for former UP President Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo is being passed around for signature of the UP faculty. Just like the suspension of Makati Mayor Jojo Binay, the issue here is beyond Nemenzo. The concern should not only be that of the UP faculty. It should also be ours.
It is every citizen’s duty to help shape the life of the nation and steer it toward a better life for most, if not all, as it is the role of academics to examine society and propose alternative solutions and directions.
Through their role as social critics, academics extend their reach way beyond the classroom, sharing their insights and knowledge with the larger public. Academics exercise this function in an environment of freedom: the freedom to inquire, to challenge, and to engage with others in society.
This is what former UP President and political science Prof. Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo has been doing. The “Blueprint for a Viable Philippines”, for example, is a reform agenda that he and colleagues from the academe and other sectors of society prepared for any Filipino citizen or group to adopt and revise as they see fit.Recently the media reported that Dr. Nemenzo is under investigation for obstructing justice and rebellion. He himself learned of these charges through the media for he has not been informed of any charge and no one, except those in power, knows when, if at all, these charges will lead to an arraignment.
Our concern is not that Dodong won’t be able to defend himself; we have no doubt he will. Our concern is that the threat of charges like these can hang indefinitely to cow others, not just in the academe, into silence.
Our concern is that this threat appears within a larger picture of forceful, at times painfully crude attempts at political repression, like the disappearances and killings of students, community organizers and others known to oppose the government.
These attempts have no place in a free and democratic society, and we will not allow anyone, the government, most of all, to frighten or constrain us from performing our role as citizens and academics.

But, with the Pidal couple at the helm of a government that engages in sowing fear, persecution and maybe systematic elimination of critics, activist and perceived enemies, can we still say that the Philippines is a free and democratic society?

Jejomar Binay, the mayor of Manila’s financial district who has become a thorn in President Arroyo’s side, styles himself as a streetfighter from the wrong side of the tracks.
“My opponents forget where I am from,” Binay told Agence France Presse in a recent interview.
“I’m a streetfighter…I am from the streets. I was born poor and what I have achieved, I have done so through hard work.”
The Marine colonel reservist is currently the toast of the Philippine opposition after facing down Mrs. Arroyo’s attempts to suspend him for alleged corruption.
A court on Thursday delayed for 60 days the suspension of the mayor and all the councilors of Makati City. The government moved against Binay two days earlier alleging the district had 500 ghost employees.
When news spread of Binay’s suspension, thousands of supporters poured into the streets around Makati city hall preventing any attempt by police to evict the mayor. The military put 1500 troops on standby fearing civil unrest.
and there was claim that progress in makati was achieved mainly through the initiative of entrepreneurs when there is no one among the business sector particulary the makati business club to own and attest to it. it cannot just be imagined why there are persons who always want to put themselves in the forefront even when there’s no proof of their flaunting. these people forget to realize that any progress in any community is achieved through harmonious partnership between the people to include the capitalists and the elected local leaders.
Thanks, Ellen. I have posted the above petition in all the UPAA forums I am in, and have asked the members to sign it for delivery to the UP Faculty and Prof. Nemenzo. One of his relatives in fact is our member in the UPAA in Japan. He is a scholar doing his research at the Tsukuba University.
I can appreciate the memo provided by the Faculty from the University of the Philippines, their proposed alternative solution and directions, Blueprint for a Viable Philippines, etc. Those are admirable words, if we are to arm ourselves to go into a debate against illegitimate Gloria and her subjects. But, the country is way passed, and beyond debate and exchanges of words. What we’ve now are dead and missing people, and words will not bring them back. Six years of talking materials perhaps will fill a library of any major school. As I see it, we are now at the stage where words matter no longer, but action put into place, execution to free the nation from ruthless regime of illegitimate Gloria.
It’s not a kept secret of illegitimate Gloria’s violent crimes against the Pilipino nation. We’ve pages and pages of bogus Gloria’s crimes that can put her away for another 20-years if bogus Gloria is lucky enough to live that long.
It’s now time to act, and words no longer applies to combat Bogus Gloria. It’s just that fake Gloria doesn’t recognize them, she uses instead her goons of armies.

Scare tactic or not, it all boils down to just one point, where one really stands! I have heard of a lot of stories of people subjected to the most inhuman torture, and endured to the end.
One of them is the story of a 17-year-old German boy in WWII, who was guillotined for standing for truth and right. He formed his own resistance against Hitler, transcribing English broadcasts on BBC into German for his fellow Germans in Hamburg to know the truth of how Hitler has duped them. He started doing that when his brother, a soldier in the German Army brought home a confiscated radio, and it had shortband. He was shocked to know the truth about what Hitler’s troops were doing in Europe. His conscience bothered him and resolved to tell his fellow Germans the truth, nothing about inciting a rebellion against Hitler. Just tell the truth like what Ellen is doing in her articles perhaps.
But the German authorities found his activity too dangerous to just let go even when they found out that the leaflets being distributed in the townspeople’s mailboxes were done by 3 teen-agers who have just finished high school. The 17-year-old leader was sentenced to die by the guillotine and the other two were sent to hard-labor camps. Hitler did not even wait a day to give the boy time to be visited by his family who decided not to anyway to get rid of him. When he was asked by the judge if he was sorry for what he did, he said, “No, your honor, for I did what I felt compelled to do according to my conscience based on my faith in God. I know He will be my better judge.”
I love this story as a matter of fact. It has been made into a movie and when I am down, I watch it to give me the pep to go on doing what I am myself “compelled to do accordng to my conscience based on my faith in God,” for God is my better judge indeed.
Now, we hear also of people being made responsible now for not doing anything even when they are in a position to do something as in the case of those who are being tried or have been tried for example in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda for example. Hopefully, there is going to be one of that kind for the Philippines for the sake of justice and truth.
Prof. Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo is a threat to bogus Gloria, and considered by bogus Gloria as her enemy that need to be eliminated. In bogus Gloria’s world, either bogus Gloria or Dodong. You can almost anticipate who’s going to be a loser, certainly not bogus Gloria. Mayor Jehomar “Rambo” Binay is another one serve as a threat to the state of continued being of bogus Gloria. And so many others. Bogus Gloria has a personal way, as we all know of dealing to those that oppose her. Simply, use all the arsenals at her disposal. And what about Dodong, what he got? His beautiful words, would that buy his life on bogus Gloria’s enchanted kingdom? I doubt it very much.
Perhaps “Dodong” will get a 60 days TRO for his life and Mayor Rambo Binay. Understanding bogus Gloria’s ruthful behavior, tough words just ain’t enough.
Ms. Ellen objective is very commendable in getting the truths out to the people. It’s her best weapon as professional journalist. However, telling the truths for six years seems not even putting a dent on bogus Gloria’s regime. Okay, I’ll concede, truths rattled bogus Gloria’s cage numerous time. That’s where exactly we are at, shook Gloria’s cage, and we haven’t advance. Bogus Gloria keep continuing what she does best, dirty rotten evil ways. And while we’re telling stories of how bogus Gloria did the “dirty rotten evil ways”, Gloria’s goons are doing us. My argument, if I’m making an argument, that there are numerous options available. Just measley telling the truth is not quite effective since bogus Gloria got a very thick brown skin and the truths just won’t penetrate through her skin – shameless, if you will.

But we should take it step by step and first create a solid foundation for the next viable Philippine Government. We should have the correct reasons and motivations to oust gloria by coup deta or assisnate Gloria and her subjects. And a good reason is this solid foundation, but absolutely not be motivated to obtain power and act just like Gloria/Marcos/Ramos. This makes Jun/Antonio Scalia’s complaints here of “kami naman ang mangungurakot” attitude obsolete.
I’m blaming Cory Aquino’s inept Presidency. When Marcos got kick out, she had a fresh start to create a solid government, but instead loopholes are still there that brought us back to square 1 with Gloria in power.
Before we oust Gloria we must first have this solid foundation. We could change the law to limit the power of the government. Gov’t should be accountable with the gov’t money. Make a crime of treason whoever steals gov’t money or even cheat on any elections. A president must have a brain, not like Erap, and he/she must work hard for our progress and development. Or something else that could establish a reliable government.
After we define that solid foundation and everyone has democratically agreed with it, Gloria has no choice, but to leave even through by force, and be prosecuted by Pilipinos.
I would like to leave you with, “illegitimate Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, bogus and a fake as a 3-pesos bill, and the Arroyo clan are the biggest problem we have now in the Philippines. How we adddress this magnitude, awesome, enormous problem will dictate the future of the Philippines. Amen!

GMA orders troop recruitment to push drive vs NPA

President Arroyo has ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to recruit at least 11,000 soldiers and militiamen to intensify the government’s campaign against the communist New People’s Army (NPA) which she wants neutralized before her term ends in 2010.
The military leadership made the announcement shortly after a command conference yesterday in the AFP’s main headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, where military commanders discussed matters relating to internal security threats.
The command conference was presided over by AFP chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr.
Esperon said 3,000 of those who will be recruited are soldiers for cadre and maneuver battalions, while the remaining 7,920 would be manning at least 90 Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Units (Cafgu) companies that will be formed.
He said Mrs. Arroyo gave the instruction last Thursday, adding “it (recruitment) will commence as soon as the Army is ready.”
Esperon said the recruitment of the Cafgus would be concentrated in the rebel bailiwicks in Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog and Bicol regions, and in Samar, Caraga Region and Davao areas.
“It is (in these places) where we will put up the new Cafgu companies,” he said.
“In line with the President’s directive to defeat the NPA by year 2010, AFP efforts will concentrate on the most advanced guerrilla fronts in the identified priority areas of our reinvigorated ISO (internal security operations), in order to relegate their capability –- strength, firearms, and influence — to an inconsequential level,” Esperon said.
“Inconsequential level” means the reduction of the NPA’s capability by 50 percent. “This effort shall include preventing their expansion to cut-off operational, logistical and financial support,” he explained.
“In relation to this, the President approved the activation of additional Cafgu companies to be organized and deployed in the targeted guerrilla fronts. They shall serve and act as village defense and stay behind government forces as our maneuver units move to their next targets,” Esperon further said.
He said the new Cafgu recruits would be made to undergo a rigorous process that would include a background investigation on them.

BERLIN – Around 220,000 people demonstrated in five cities across Germany on Saturday against Chancellor Angela Merkel’s economic, health and pension reforms, organisers said.
In the biggest event 80,000 people demonstrated in Berlin, according to police, while other protests in the cities of Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Munich and Dortmund each drew at least 20,000 demonstrators.
Among the contested reforms are changes to the public health insurance system and a plan to raise the retirement age from 65 to 67. Demonstrators also criticised a shortage of professional apprenticeships.
Saturday’s demonstrations, organised by several of the country’s leading unions, came amid a wider debate over social welfare in Germany. Reforms to health insurance have even divided parties within Merkel’s ruling coalition.
“I can only advise the (federal government’s) grand coalition not to ignore this cry for help,” the president of the German Unions Confederation, Michael Sommer, said in Stuttgart.

Senior citizens are a very priviledged sector who have the luxury of time, have regular income coming from pensions and doleouts of employed children who may even be OFWs, and command respect that even the most hotheaded Antay-Riot Policemen would choose to avoid seeing in rallies. These are qualities most rally attendees could only envy.
Pension increase or none, one group should now organize more of this “Grey Army” to stand up against the diabolical Black Army of the animals in the pigsty by the river.

Talking of the grayhaired citizens, especially those who had experienced guerrilla warfare in WWII should be invited in fact to contribute even by just listening to their experiences, not so much of their expertise. A lot can be learned from things they actually went through than listen to those untested rudiments of war even when we have entered the IT system of modern soldiers in countries like Japan or the USA being trained with PC warfare games.
There are groups of veterans all over the Philippines, and I know that majority are against the Bansot especially when their pensions are slow to come and resolved.
Last year, we had interviews for a documentary presented during the commemoratio of the end of WWII with veterans in Laguna and Rizal. A lot many of them are in fact still up and going. Ang daming galit kay Bansot sa totoo lang. It was from them that I heard of the valor and courage of the grandfather of Francis Escudero as a matter of fact.
