Ipinahayag ni Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan, ang pinakamataas na military commander sa Central Luzon, ang kanyang kawalan ng simpatiya sa tatlong estudyante ng University of the Philippines na dinukot noong Lunes sa Hagonoy, Bulacan.
Sinabi ng League of Filipino Students sina Karen Empeño, Sherlyn Cadapan at Manuel Merio ay pwersadong kinuha ng anim na armadong lalaki mga 2:30 ng umaga sa knilang tinitirhan na bahay sa Hagonoy habang sila ay nagre-research sa kalagayan ng mga magsasaka.
Si Empeño ay BA Sociology student sa College of Social Sciences and Philosophy sa UP Diliman. Si Cadapan naman ay isang premyadong athlete sa College of Human Kinetics (CHK). Sya ang representative ng CHK representative sa University Student Council. Community organizer siya ng Anakbayan.
Sinabi ni Palparan: “Mga NPA sila (miyembro ng New People’s Army). Nakausap ko ang ilang mga residente at sinabi nilang mga komunista yang mga esdtudyante.”
Dagdag pa ni Palparan: “Ang kanilang pagkawala ay mabuti para sa amin. Pero hindi ko alam kung sino ang dumukot sa kanila. Mabuti sa amin yan kasi NPA sila. Yan ang sabi ng mga tao sa amin. Matagal na nilang hawak ang lugar na ito.”
Ngunit sabi ni Palparan, hindi niya maaring ilabas ang kanyang mga testigo laban sa mga estudyante dahil natatakot raw silang balikan ng mga NPA.
May puso pa ba at kaluluwa itong si Palparan?
Suspetsa ang kanilang basehan ngunit sila na rin ang huwes at berdugo. Anong klaseng palakad ito? Kung paniwala nila itong tatlong estudyante ay lumilihis sa batas, di hulihin nila at kasuhan.
Ito ang epekto ng all-out war ni Gloria Arroyo. Binigyan niya ng lisensya pumatay ang mga military ng kung sino man ang ina-akala nilang kaaway ng nila. Wala silang paki-alam kung ang pinaglalaban ng mga tao ay para sa kabutihan ng taumbayan.
Ang sa kanila lang ay basta hindi ka sang-ayun sa kanila, kung akala nila ay nalalagay sa alanganin ang kanilang kapangyarihan kailangan mawala ka sa mundong ito.
Kaya malaking kaipokrituhan ang pinagmamalaki ni Glroia Arroyo na papel niya sa pag-alis ng death penalty. Kung talagang pinapahalagahan niya ang buhay, dapat sabihan niya ang kanyang mga alagad na huwag basta pumatay ng mga bumabatikos sa kanya. Di sana hindi siya naglunsad ng all-out war.
Hindi giyera at pagpatay ang solusyon sa sitwasyun na namamayani ang kasinungalingan at kawalang hustisya. Ang solusyon ay alisin ang puno ng sinungaling at pasimuno ng kasamaan dito sa bayan. At iyan ay si Gloria Arroyo.

Iyan ang sabi ko doon sa isang NGO na nagkukumbidang pumunta ako sa Pilipinas para mag-lecture ng kaalaman namin sa community work and networking dito sa Japan para sa mga social causes. Baka bigla na lang dumating itong mga bobong sundalong kanin at magnakaw at kidnapin kami tapos ibibintang sa grupo ni Ka Roger!
Kaya sabi ko, “I’d rather wait for the right time, or go there as a missionary of our church, and try to turn the hearts of Filipinos to the real God, not Mammon whom they now actually worship kaya sila handang magpakamatay sa Iraq at Afghanistan!”

It could be that his conscience has hardened or he has no more conscience.

This reminds me of a former professor who was jailed by Marcos because of a thesis he wrote about the Communist Party, and he was a priest. After his release, a soldier was assigned to guard him while he teaches.
At least my prof was released, alive and unhurt. But I did lose some colleagues during those dark years of the dictorship. Dictatorship is the key word, are we under the same system now? I have a friend, who now lives in SFO, and has never gone back to the Philippines since the time he and his family escaped to the US with the help of members of our church.
He, too, was a victim of this kind of liquidation of those who fall out of grace of the administration. He, too, experienced being taken forcibly from his house by men in uniform, and taken to a remote place like some ricefield similar to the one where the witness presented by SiRaulO Gonzales said he was relieving himself and saw the 5 partylist Congressmen talking and plotting the assassination of the wannabe queen of the Philippines. There the men in uniform took turns in beating him with their fists and their guns, and left him for dead.
By some miracle, he was found by farmers there who happened to be members of our church, and taken to some hospital for treatment. When he recovered, with the assistance of members of our church working at the US embassy, he was taken to Hong Kong where he completed processing his application for political asylum in the US. This actually happened during the Martial Law just before the assassination of Ninoy Aquino.
It was his wife, who told me his story, that he would actually leave the wife to tell, and he would go to the other room while she did. The wife has since left this life, and he is left with such bitter memory. He must be shaking his head now in despair that after all these years, and Marcos gone, it is still the same, and even worse!

And I talked to few “angels” and they said Gen. Palparan just made it up to justify what about to happen or are planning to happen. If this is the way the “brave and the tough” soldiers going to fight the armed insurgency and the secesionist rebellion, then Ms. Arroyo 2 years ambitious plan of eradicating the “reds” is as good as her “enchanted kingdom” dream.

Two hit by lightning

Two people were struck by lightning Saturday night while waiting for Canada Day fireworks to start.
The man and the woman were attending celebrations at Taylor Creek Park in East York and had picked up their metal lawn chairs and were running for shelter when it started raining.
Lightning struck. Both were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Talking of lightning these two are very lucky considering the man was hit in the neck and went thru.
Safety tips to avoid being struck.
1. Stay away from metals. They are electricity conductors.
2. Avoid taking shelters under tall trees. They too attrack lightning.
3. If can not get inside the house, as soon as thunder storm starts, stay in the open area and crouch.
As much as we wish the lightning aim its sight to those who deserve its milllion of volts of current, and leave no traces of them, the fact is, it strike anything and everything and not as selective as our Justice System and our “Lightning Fast” politicians when it come to helping themselves to the Till..

Palparan is one of the most hideous scoundrels you have in the military.
I know the AFP well and its leadership and could say with confidence that some of the top ranking members may be corrupt, are heavily politicised, and sometimes don’t have a clue as to how to end the para-military troubles affecting the country but most of them don’t relish the idea of killing one of their own.
Even those who fought heavily in Mindanao in the 70s did so as soldiers and not as blood-thirsty creatures. They fought the Muslim rebellion fire for fire and with gusto but that’s what the military is all about.
But Palparan is evil – he terrorizes civilians, he kills the unarmed, he pokes fun at the helpless and he relishes the idea of civilian subservience to his army just because he carries a gun.
Palparan is a scourge in the military. I raised his case with friends of mine at a meeting attended by top ranking military people some 2 years ago and even spoke to General Efren Abu about the mindset of this berdugo. I cautioned them that they should slow down this insane, mad, unbalanced militarist. Abu said that the charges against him at the time couldn’t be proven and so they couldn’t do anything about him. He gave me some military line about Palparan doing a soldier’s job to which I countered – “That’s not soldiering”. I added Palparan is an assassin in Army uniform and assasinating civilians is not soldiering.”
I also spoke to then FOIC Ernie de Leon about him, saying that as a member of the Board of Generals, he could put in a word to stymy the aggressiveness of Palparan but it seems that Palparan has IMPRESSED if not COWED even the best of the best from PMA to surrender.
Palparan shames the military uniform. Why does he prey on young students, the civilians, women, men?
He must NOT take international opinion likely. He could be brought to the international tribunal court to answer for crimes against humanity and when that happens, there’s NOTHING he can do but to join the followers of another berdugo but now deceased MILOSEVIC in a Dutch prison.
Gloria is a fool; she is extremely idiotic to think that by not reigning Palparan, she could wipe out left-leaning ideologists. Palparan is a scourge on the nation and she will eventually pay the price. Both of them should be hanged by their toes from the highest lamppost in the land.

I understand that a group in Japan is now pursuing helping the group of lawyers in the Philippines re human rights violations there.
I came from the wake of Larry Sipin and FVR was there. He was saying that it’s wrong for Gloria Arroyo to give a deadline for the AFP and PNP to wipe out the insurgency just because she gave one billion pesos. He explaining about the nature of the insurgency, that it’s a social, political, economic problem. He made a lot of sense.
He said he told the things he were telling us to Ermita and the executive secretary just shook his head.
He said it’s the brainchild of Norberto Gonzales. (And I’m sure to the delight of military officers like Palparan.)
