Although not yet in the scale that blogs in the United States and South Korea influence national issues, the emerging power of blogs in the Philippines got affirmation in the appeal of Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman to the public, “especially the bloggers” to stop vilifying his family over the Valley Golf Glub.
A blog, by the way, is short for “web log”. It’s a personal website. The owner of the blog can write anything that he wants to express in his cyber space.
Last December 26, golfer Bambee de la Paz wrote in her blog that earlier in the day, his 56-year old father, Delfin, and 14-year old brother,Bino were beaten “to a pulp” by Mayor Nasser Pangandaman,Jr and his bodyguards while the father, who was re-appointed by Gloria Arroyo three days earlier as member of the peace panel in the negotiation with Muslim rebels, looked on.
Since most of the mainstream media were on holidays, the vacuum of informing the public about what many considered a despicable incident was taken up by blogs. Since many of those blogs were by people not covered by the journalism rules such as accuracy check and fairness, there was no effort to get the side of the Pangandamans.
The outrage over the incident and against the Pangandamans spread like wildfire in the internet. Within 24 hours, some 60 blogs, Facebook and Multiply accounts linked with Bambee’s site. Text messages directed people to Bambee’s blog. I got at least six emails of her story.
As of this writing, Bambee’s blog entry has over 1,000 comments, all expressing support for her and her family.
The Pangandamans, however, cannot complain about not having been given the chance to air their side. Reporter bloggers tried to get their side. I called up Press Secretary Jesus Dureza several times. They could not be contacted.
I sensed that the public anger against Pangandaman has a lot to do with his being a member of the Arroyo cabinet, which is seen by the people as corrupt and abusive. It did not help that two days after the Valley Golf incident, Pangandaman was at the Baguio Country Club playing golf with Rep. Mikey Arroyo
TV and newspapers later picked up the story. As usual, Malacañang did the standard dousing-water- over fire strategy of asking the Justice department to investigate.
There is now an entry in www.pinoygolfer.com whose author is identified only as RGE about an unofficial investigation report of the Valley Golf Club of the incident showing that it was older the De la Paz who instigated the fight. RGE said,” Let’s put it this way, the people we thought of as villains weren’t quite what they were depicted to be. and the supposed protagonists may have yet been quite as factual in their testimony as it turns out to be.”
Dennis Garcia of the ’70s band Hotdogs has a witty piece in his blog on the De la Paz-Pangandaman fight entitled “ 12 Things that the Valley Golf mauling effectively proved”. It sums up sentiments of many people about the incident.
Garcia’s list:
12.The pen is mightier than the biggest PR or crisis management budget (Tons of cash cannot buy minds with unwavering conviction – for further validation, go ask several Senatorial bets who spent a fortune in 2007… for nought)
11.The noisiest screw gets oiled first
10. Most of our politicians – from the most lowly to the most high – are guilty of hubris
Hubris denotes overconfident pride and arrogance; it is often associated with a lack of humility, not always with the lack of knowledge. An accusation of hubris often implies that suffering or punishment will follow, similar to the occasional pairing of hubris and nemesis in the Greek world. The proverb “pride goes before a fall” is thought to sum up the modern definition of hubris.
9. Filipino government officials – even when caught red-handed doing ‘bad’ things – never resign… because, they serve “at the pleasure of the President”
8. It pays to have writing skills when you’re up against abusive, ill-educated powerful people
7. At least, for a while, we may hear less and less of this line: “baka hindi mo kilala me…”
6. Golfers should make a canister of mace and a baseball bat standard golf accessories
5. People who work in golf courses do not see or hear very well
4. Being seen playing golf with the First Son, after a barrage of negative press, is not a very smart move
3.Filipinos will never be docile again because of the internet.
2.Technology can be put to good use – especially when exposing misdeeds and scandalous conduct.
1.The Pangandamans are in deep shit
Secretary Pangandaman is complaining about the blogs accusing these of being unfair to him. If not for the blogs like this,
how could ordinary citizens and victims fight back?
The Pangandamans are now exerting their influence on all sectors to defend their crime. Proof of this is one veteran columnist, Ducky Paredes, of Malaya who came out with an entire column defending the Pangandamans and blaming the incident on Dela Paz.
The very first blog that I started reading about a year ago was in yahoo. The posters there, as we know are paid posters of bansot and fatboy pidal. The posters there thrashed tribune journalist and other journalist that exposed corruptions of pidal mafia but yahoo posters are very proud to mention this Ducky Paredes as a fair and unbiased journalist. Right there, I already concluded that this Ducky Paredes is a paid journalist of bansot.
I was an admirer and fan of Ducky Paredes too until he changed his tune a couple of years back. His interest in golf has affected his credibility. Not because of the sport; but the kind of people he plays with who include the goons in Malacanang. I tried my best not to criticize him knowing that he writes for the same paper as Ellen. But the last column he wrote defending the Pangandamans and blaming Dela Paz is the last straw.
Tell me if this won’t make you sick:
http://www.malaya.com.ph/jan05/edducky.htm
The Palace-friendly spinmeisters and hacks are actually working overtime. A quick google of any of the names of the people involved in the melee now produces several links to blogs that gives “the other side” of the story. Looking at the pages returned on the search page, however, are but quoting the same source – the exaggerated account of the Pangandamans that came out in the news. It looks like these were blogged by the same people under different aliases in different blogs.
This time again, money and influence will play against the victims. If the case goes nowhere, we know who wins and who loses.
Another case that we should keep a close watch is the “Alabang Boys” involving a DOJ Undersecretary. They’re now turning the table on PDEA. The DOJ official is a political appointee of Gloria. He admitted to have made the call to PDEA but only to follow up the case and not to pressure for their release. Another common alibi. Remember the guy Sabio from GSIS who called his brother at Court of Appeals? The same reason: Only to ask. The DOj official said someone went to see him to follow up the case of one of the accused. One of the three rich Alabang Boys has a relative who is a Malacanang Presidential Adviser. That could be the “someone” he’s referring to. This case is no ordinary case.
This involves a very big drug syndicate and the suspects arrested belong to the second highest echelon of the group.
Justice Undersecretary Ricardo Blancaflor Sunday described as “public assistance” his phone call to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Dec. 19 to ask why it was not releasing three drug suspects even after state prosecutors had cleared them.
Defending the call, Blancaflor said he was merely heeding a request from an uncle of one of the suspects.
……Whenever Malacanang officials are caught with their pants down, they have silly reasons in defending themselves.
This time, this idiot claims he did it as “public assistance”. What a stupid reason! If we buy his reason, then he should have done the same thing to all suspects arrested and jailed. I’m sure there are as many relatives who would want to follow up the cases.
Hahahahaha! Tinalaban na ba ang mga hoodlums? Pwe!
The people have been voiceless for so long. Now the blogosphere is a medium to express. It’s still young and it needs to grow more . There’s nothing wrong with the debate. The on-going publicity may correct the wrongs of others and may open our country to real democracy. Let the politician be bothered by it. Let them deal with it and experience it.
Let them explain and rebuild their credibility, character and conduct of public service.
Express yourself. Let it out even more. This case is a perfect Bang for the new Year.
I always believe in the power of Ellen’s blog. 🙂
“After all that has been said and done, ngayon sa korte na lang magkita-kita. Let the court decide,” Secretary Pangandaman said.
He said that aside from the criminal charges, Nasser Jr. might also file a libel suit against the De la Pazes in Lanao del Sur after a blog was circulated in the Internet vilifying the Pangandaman family.
The elder Pangandaman also threatened to file his own libel suit against the De la Pazes for allegedly spreading false information on the Valley Golf incident.
…..If Pangandaman was sincere in his apology, why still file charges against Dela Paz? Worse, a case shall be filed in his home town, Lanao del Sur. Such legal move is nothing but to make it very inconvenient for the other party. The Dela Paz would be intimidated and harassed while attending hearings in Lanao. On the other hand, the Pangandamans have no problem in Antipolo since it’s DILG Secretary’s territory and the Pangandaman father and sons are mostly in Metro Manila.
“It pays to have high connections. Not only did a sub strive to have Justice Sec. Raul Gonzalez free the three “Alabang boys” before Christmas. His deputy Ric Blancaflor also tried to rush the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency into releasing the suspected narco-traders. And Palace aide Dodi Limcaoco has been named as the “influential uncle” of one of the trio.
If only the Senate were in session, gorier details would surface. Sen. Greg Honasan, head of the drugs committee, announced an inquiry when sessions reopen Jan. 19. But then he might have to recuse himself, for Blancaflor was once his chief of staff.
The PDEA is raring to bare in the Senate a “P50-million bribe” for prosecutors to dilute its case against the wealthy trio from Ayala-Alabang. Dir. Gen. Dionisio Santiago says he will present mobile phone messages as evidence. His “incorruptible” Maj. Ferdinand Marcelino will testify on Blancaflor’s interloping, and offers of P3 million and P20 million to drop charges.
But precisely because of high connections, two weeks is a long time. Anything can happen from now till the Senate starts hearings. Santiago and Marcelino can be made to shut up or change their stories. The best way for them to show earnestness is to file charges this early against the bribers and bribees.”
Exactly Chi, Maám Ellen’s blog is really the voice of unsung heroes who dreamed to have a properous Philippines and peacefull society.
We came from different places around the world just to share and to express our sama ng loob and dissatisfaction against gloria’s inept leadership.
Most of us have the same feelings toward sa pagmamalabis ng arroyo gov’t and her lapdogs.
RE: Worse, a case shall be filed in his home town, Lanao del Sur?
BE,
I have no respect in whatsoever in our justice system, kaya dapat litisin ang mag-amang yan with their bodyguards sa people’s court?
Pangandaman and his gang are now attacking blogs that post unfavorably of them including our very own blog here.
They are welcome BE!
Balweg, there are also goons in the Tagalog region. What’s notorious these days are those connected with Malacanang.
A friendly RED ALERT warning to Ducky Paredes
BE READY TO DUCK!!! Shoes and shit might soon be thrown on you.
Ducky now talks like a duck…walks like a duck.
Hello Ellen and all,
First and foremost: Happy New Year, good health, peace and prosperity to one and all.
Secondly, I’m still trying to catch up on my backlog of reading (Ellen’s posts and comments) and must say, this story caught my attention.
As you rightly say, Ellen, people were carried away because the “other” party belongs to Gloria’s camp. Seems everyone associated with Gloria or anybody she touches is automatically lumped up with her, i.e., evil. Not surprising reaction from people who despise her and her cronies as a rule.
That said, the moral of the story is that blogging is now a force to contend with, at least, in the court of public opinon and by gum, I’m all for it. If blogging is one way to help erode Gloria’s base, so be it. Those who are associated with her will just have to bite the bullet. Either that or they disown the bitch.
be. you are right. Ducky is now a quacky columnist. From the 6 Little Ducks Song, he’s no longer the duck with a feather on his back. He turned to a big old duck with a POCKET on his back. He QUACKS for BUCKS, that’s why he always writes in Abante and Malaya lots of QUACK, QUACK, QUACK.
Tama si Syria, Ducky Paredes has become another lame duck! Yuck! 🙁
Tuloy pa rin ang batikos sa mga unggoy of Lanao even when we know that under Gloria Dorobo, justice cannot be served especially with paid lip server like the lame duck of Malaya! Pwe! 😛
The candidates may put in their alibis and their answers to the blogges’s FAQs.
Pangandaman used to be a family name associated with diplomacy and peacemaking. Liningding Pangandaman, Nasser Sr.’s father, was part of Marcos’ team that negotiated the peace accord with Col. Moammar Khaddafy in Tripoli. If my memory serves me right, another member of the GRP was a “certain” AFP Col. Eduardo Ermita and another Marcos protegé, Simeon Datumanong, while the other side was represented by a group that included Salamat Hashim who later formed the MILF over GRP’s failure to follow the terms of the agreement. Liningding was prevented from following Hashim, and was prevailed upon personally by FVR during his presidential term when he was offered to be Lakas-NUCD’s official candidate for ARMM governorship. Pangandaman won and that kicked off the Pangandaman political dynasty in Lanao del Sur. This also converted the clan into a warlord family after they ensured that their turf would remain theirs and would not surrender the throne to other Maranaw families like the powerful Pacasum after Nasser Sr. married one of its descendants.
About 20 of the towns in that province are consistently election hotspots it is common knowledge that if any post is contested by at least TWO candidates, there would certainly be a failure of elections. Lanao del Sur is a certified playground of the Garci-Bedol kind.
The Maguindanaoans were however bigger in number and more influential that this time, it’s the Ampatuan’s turn to control the whole ARMM region’s politics for generations coming especially if one son-in-law, Noli De Castro, becomes president.
Before that happens though, let’s just be contented with bashing these barbarians in the net while they terrorize and assault golf players, young and old alike.
Pangandaman shouldn’t be playing golf, since the golf is a Gentlemen’s Game, men’s with honor and integrity. Obviously, Pangandaman lack thereof.
BRAVERY,like cowardice,is contagious!
Great info, Tongue. The problem now is there’s a report that the Dela Paz family is open to amicable settlement.
Another report I got is that the owner of the Valley Golf where the incident happened is a cousin of Mike Pidal Arroyo.
On another topic, some of Erap’s allies are cooking up a Bro. Mike Velarde-Erap team in 2010. Please take note…Velarde as President and Erap as Vice. Oh my God !
He said that aside from the criminal charges, Nasser Jr. might also file a libel suit against the De la Pazes in Lanao del Sur after a blog was circulated in the Internet vilifying the Pangandaman family.
***********************
Madalas ang hometown decision sa Lanao. I have litigated a few cases in Lanao, and even in Marawi. Hindi pa tapos ang period to appeal, mayroon nang execution pending appeal, at mayroon nang levy on bank assets. Of course, they control Lanao, but not Manila. We got a TRO from the Court of Appeals, restraining the judge.
Libel again? That is the favorite blunt instrument of the Pig. Bring it on. Let us challenge the provision itself, as being unconstitutional – the comment was about a political figure, and his actuations in a public place.
Sabi ni Pangandaman they were acting in self-defense. Samakatuwid, may bugbugan ngang nangyari. A fish is caught by its mouth. Proof of the truth is an absolute defense in a prosecution for libel.
Atty, may we know your opinion about Ducky Paredes’ column defending the Pangandamans:
http://www.malaya.com.ph/jan05/edducky.htm
Atty, may we know your opinion about Ducky Paredes’ column defending the Pangandamans:
*******************
It is a masterful snow job. It starts with:
“What I narrate ignores the testimonies of the so-called victims (Delfin, Bambi and Dino De la Paz) or the alleged ruffians (Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of DAR and Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. and four other male companions) where these have no corroborating witnesses.
Here are the facts:”
Binaligtad pa. It was Delfin who said “Don’t you know who I am? Are you a member here?”
Witnesses may be bought and will lie; physical evidence does not lie. Wasn’t Bino’s ear bleeding? Where is the physical evidence on the injury of Hussein caused by Bambee? A Maranaw macho will allow a girl to hurt him? Try again Pato (I mean Ducky).
What were armed men doing in a golf course?
There were two flights of Pangandamans? I’m sure the golf course records have already been doctored to show that. So what are their names?
Ducky, a mere member got records of the Valley Golf? Ang lakas naman. He got an advance report? Or did he concoct it?
Can you give the names of these wetnesses (sorry witnesses) of yours? We need it to double check with their employment records, just to be sure the witness was not off that day.
Why don’t you follow the advice of your brother? Take a hike.
“Just the facts?”
If the Antipolo Police could not even get any word or cooperation from Valley Golf & Country Club because they would not talk, how in the world would Ducky Paredes got all of his so called “facts”?
There are so many people or units investigating this incident.
Valley Golf
Antipolo Police
NBI
The Senate will do their own investigation
Where did Ducky got his???
Granted for the sake of argument De la paz instigated the fight? Why in the world would they beat up a 14 year old kid?
Ducky also wrote “Did Delfin need help walking? Had he been beaten to a pulp? No. In fact, he was on his cellphone, spiritedly calling for what seemed like reinforcements.” which seemed condescending.
It appears that from what I am reading there seemed to be only the three of them (De la paz – Father, son & daughter)defending themselves whereas the Pangandaman is complete with bullyguards err bodyguards. Armed.
Does Ducky knows about the normal human reaction to ask for help? He seemed to insinuate that there was no beating that ever happened. Ano yon? Kinurot?
I hope the dela Pazes will not agree to an amicable settlement of this case. No way!
Libel daw? Yuck!!! Ang sama talaga ng image!
I must admit, I was quick to the draw in hurling a plateful of unkind words to what the Pangandaman’s did. Not that I regret doing so, but what I do find disturbing is the emerging other side of the story….
Nothing can excuse the “gulpi” De La Paz received from the other group. He may had it coming for acting arrogantly himself. We have a saying here, “nakatapat ka rin.”
But what excuse do we find for someone so young to blog about a story in such a distorted manner, deflecting all blames, painting ones self as the “innocent victims?”
This incident points to two very alarming symptoms from the “cancer” that has systematically been eating away at the very fiber of our sense of decency as a people, and collectively as a nation.
1. By mere association with GMA, it is “understandable” to condemn the flaunting of perverted sense of power. It seems people around GMA are as deeply infected with all that GMA personifies. Otherwise, decent people would shudder at the mere thought of “serving the [fake] president’s pleasure.”
2. For such a young person to use the persuasive power of the blog to escape the responsibility of ones actions, or to paint ones father as the “innocent victim” is exactly why Dr. Jose Rizal’s dream that “the youth is the hope of our motherland” needs a major boost from everyone who is concerned enough to do something to reverse the ceaseless devouring of our youth -turning them into “junior” versions of the appalling leaders we deserve.
Decency, humility, simplicity and honesty could not have bred the protagonists in this Valley Golf drama.
Ducky’s fucking facts! At the very first lines, his column was already false. He said “What I narrate ignores the testimonies of the so-called victims (Delfin, Bambi and Dino De la Paz)…
I’ve read his Malaya column online (Ellen’s follows his) and for starters, he did mention the name of Dino dela Paz. Dino is an elder brother of 14 year-old Bino, the Callaway Jungolf champion. Dino came to the aid of the family with Delfin’s wife after the twin mauling incidents were already finished. Biiiig mistake.
“Just the facts” daw?
Monsag says:
But what excuse do we find for someone so young to blog about a story in such a distorted manner, deflecting all blames, painting ones self as the “innocent victims?”
——
Wow, typical response from pangadaman’s paid liars. Blaming the victims for telling the truth.
Art Carpio, who is based in Saudi Arabia and describes himself a “concerned senior golfer”, sent me this note:
From R. Milano in Redwood City, California:
I just read your column and it enraged me when these kind of people abuse their power and more specially protected by Malacanang. I just hope that the investigation will not result to a whitewash. Any trouble that envolve Arroyos men nothing will happen. Remember the Euro Generals what happen to the investigation?
The cabinet meeting tomorrow will be in Lanao del Sur. The host, of course, is Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman.
Yan ang tunay na show of power.
I also wrote Ducky Paredes. Let me hear what’s his response. I used to be his avid reader but eversince I noticed his changed of tone, I stopped. SAYANG si Ducky. No principle! Nabibili pala!
Ang mga Pangandamans? They should rot in hell! The gall to have a press conference daw in Lanao! LOKOHIN nila ang sarili nila! Right, the Pidal family should attend that and of course they should not forget to bring with them Ducky Paredes so he could write more of what he claimed as ” Just the FACTS daw…!” All same dark C O L O R S!!!
Tongue T, yes , a true “SHOW OF POWER” cabinet meeting in Lanao Del Sur! they want to send a message to everybody especially their victims (the De lapaz family)that they are influential and has the utmost importance and power hmmm… tsk, tsk tsk…. ma wa whitewash to.
This Ducky Paredes is really a duck. Tumatakbo kahit putulin ang ulo. … where the hell he concocted his fantasy story… gagawa lang ng kwento …eh… very obvious pa ang kanyang cover up. magkano kaya ang ibinayad sa kanya?
I will go along with Ducky Paredez for the meantime. No one else among bloggers in the whole world went closer to the golf course after the facts to ask to form qualified ideas yet.
Show of power nga. They made the million-vote lead over FPJ, so they can unmake this woman. She better be nice to them.
Garci, where were you when they needed you? The secretary ran for governor of Lanao and lost.Kaya mo lang gaguhin ang taga Luzon; but you do not have the mandate of your own people.
Compare this loser to the late Mamintal Tamano – a mild-mannered, urbane legislator. Tamano won as vice gov and served ten years, and was elected as Senator, pre-martial law, and later in the Cory years.
Tongue, why would the de la Pazes have to spend legal fees in the criminal case against the Pangadanams when the state prosecutors will be handling the prosecution side as it is the criminal case? And the de la Pazes are complainants in this case.. in civil case for damages maybe. but usually in criminal cases it is always the dependants who will pay for the defense legal fees unless they are qualified for legal aid, in which case the Secretary family will not as they are very WEALTHY.
The emerging power of the Pangadanams! Ngayon nakikita ko kung sino sila..hawak nila si putot at kayang kaya nilang dalhin ang cabinet meeting sa kanilang lugar..they hold her by ner nose..and her entire being sila ang power kailangan sila ni putot…
may nagsabi nito na Fat Guy is running for President? Are they trying to make the country..Baboyan Republic? or are they building their own Babuyan Kingdom at dinala sa Lanao ang cabinet meeting…malungkot!
How The World Comes Together:
This was forwarded to me by a friend. At first,it looks like
it’s just some guy singing “Stand By Me”. But wait and watch it unfold into a really neat version of the song, participated in by people from all over the world. (I didn’t notice anyone from Australia and Asia, though.) It is well done and I hope you will enjoy it as I did.
Here is the link to the video. Copy it to your browser.

Kuang si FG ang president at si DP ang press secretary ang maging national anthem seguro ay..macapal gal has a farm? in her farm she has ha fig heh hay heh hay hoh with an hoink, hoink ‘ere hand a quack quack there…what a family!
pasensiya na kayo at mali mali sng spelling ko sa tagalog…’appy new year na lang sa fekeng pang-gulo and pees to er hand er pamily,,na frozen ata ang mga kamay ko…Tgrgrrr manong!
Vic, the Dela Paz doesn’t trust the state prosecutors. So, they decided to hire the services of Atty. Fortun, a high profile lawyer. Fortun Law Office is very expensive. I presume some groups are helping Dela Paz. He’s against powerful and influential respondents.
“Strictly Politics” was supposed to tackle the Valley Golf Club incident for tomorrow’s episode but we were told that Secretary Pangandaman couldn’t make it because he will be the host of Gloria Arroyo in the cabinet meeting.
Now, I’m told the cabinet meeting will be in Iligan city.
L0L! I can just imagine how many batallion of soldiers will be move over to Iligan city to hide the pekeng “Mole” from Malakanyang!
Paging Korina! Why don’t you move your venue to Iligan city? Make the Cabinet meeting LIVE! Kaya lang baka ito na ang first and last showing ng program mo, Korina!
I was a bit surprised why Dela Paz only charged the Pangandamans slight physical injuries and one count of child abuse. Such charges could easily be dismissed or settled.
In their counter charge, the Pangandamans used some witnesses from the Valley Golf. They’re not neutral witnesses, but the caddies they hired.
ang dali buhatin ang cabinet ni pudot..is it made of steal? iba na nga ang maraming pira and what are they in power for..iba na nga!
Nagsisipsip ng husto iyong unggoy ng Lanao ha? Parepareho lang silang kurakot!
Iyan ang tactic ni Gloria ng show of support sa mga katulad niyang kurakot. She is having the cabinet meeting in Iligan para i-assure iyong unggoy ng Lanao na hindi niya pansin ang reklamo ng mga dela Paz despite the international coverage. Kaya daw niyang pabulaanan ang report using public funds to pay her publicity agent based in the US. Wow! Point is bakit iyan nakakalusot?
Kawawang Pilipinas talaga
Re: “1.The Pangandamans are in deep shit”
Gloria’s entire administration thrives in shit!
hindi niyo ba ako kilala?
I gave Gloria over 1 million votes !!!!
I will not resign over this brawl. She owed me her seat.
oh ano, kilala niyo na ako?
🙂
Between a Cabinet Secretary with his son Town Mayor and a businessman, who would have the guts to ask “Do you know me?”
Why are the Pangandamans now twisting it and saying it was Dela Paz who asked that question?
Classic De Quiroz:
“What has Ms Arroyo done for the ordinary Filipino except to treat him like a mushroom, keeping him in the dark and nourishing him with bull?”
And also:
“It’s not a question of popularity, it’s a question of trust. Moses could not have led his people out of the desert if his people thought he was a con man with a beard or refused to reveal God’s communications with him on the ground of prophetic privilege.“
And it must be coupled with good works and leading by example.
Christ led by example and performed good works.
Well now. In other blogs, there are posts about Nasser Jr.’s having won “The Most Outstanding Mayor” award in August 2008. Awarded by whom? Outstanding in what?
Gusto niyo ng outstanding mayor? Marides Fernando of Marikina made it to the top eleven in the World Mayor awards.
http://www.worldmayor.com/contest_2008/finalists-2008.html
Awards can be bought.
atty,
I think that site bases its decision from online voters which we know, “kinukuyog” ng Pinoys who are more tech savvy than most citizens anywhere in the world. Binay was the first to be nominated there I’m not sure now if he won it then. But if we are to base our choice on the actual transformation of cities, Las Piñas, Marikina, Palayan, and GenSan in that order are my top picks.
No bilib ako sa mga contests by popularity.
Tongue, Binay did not win the title when he was nominated. Isa ako sa nakiloko. I voted for Binay para lang may pilipino sa nominated contestants. Nothing else.
grizzy,
At the rate they are spending resources in defending the Secretary and his son over blogs and other fora, I wouldn’t be surprised if either Nasser Sr or Jr will be the runaway poll winner to be the next Pope!
******************
I forgot to include in my pick of cities with stellar performance the city of Sta. Rosa, Laguna which should be my top choice.
Tongue,
Don’t forget the TOYM awardees JV Ejercito and Toby Tiangco. They have performed and made San Juan and Navotas as one of the best performing LGUs in the country inspite being in the opposition.
San Juan is a model community and I think JV did a great job in its emergence as a great city. He is really far better than his brother Jinggoy who did not do anything even if his father was the President.
Navotas on the the other hand, has been plagued by flooding problems. Because of Toby’s innovativeness, he was able to solve this by installing pumps in strategic areas.
Two members of the opposition, two performing chief executives.

teka, lalo ‘atang mali, ah?
Does everyone here know the real personalities of the DelaPaz family? The gavel was already hammered down in favor of the Pangandaman’s, how about the other end?
The Arrogance of Power
A defenseless 56-year old man and his 14-year old son were mauled by a town mayor and his brother as their father — a cabinet member and “peace negotiator” — and several armed bodyguards watched. This incident is a sign that the country has gone to the dogs. Indeed, what happened at the golf course is a microcosm of what is happening all over the country today: the arrogance of those in power.
On December 26, 2008, Delfin de la Paz, his son “Bino” and his 18-year old daughter Bambee were playing golf at the Valley Golf Country Club in Antipolo, Rizal when their lives turned upside down at the hands of Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., Mayor of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, and his brother Hussein, sons of Agrarian Reform Secretary and government peace panel member Nasser Pangandaman, Sr. What is really appalling is that the cause for the brutal attack was an argument over golf etiquette, a misunderstanding that could have been resolved amicably.
When the Pangandaman brothers ganged up on the elder Dela Paz, the young Bino pleaded to the mayor to stop beating his dad, “Sorry na po… sorry na po… tama na… tama na po…” (“Sorry sir… sorry sir… please stop… please stop…”). Instead the mayor punched Bino on the face. Pretty soon the bodyguards joined in mauling the Dela Pazes. Bambee tried to stop the beating of her father and brother but to no avail. When someone finally stopped the brawl, the mayor told his caddy, “Hindi nila kami kilala! Sabihin mo nga sa kanila kung sino ako!” (“They don’t know who we are! Tell them who I am!”).

Problem is Navotas also houses some of the worst fish canning companies in greater Manila area. Some of these canning firms won’t pass hygiene standards compared to a few I know in Thailand. Moreover, some of these firms are owned by tax-evaders who make it a point not to put a number or identifying plates on their premises in order to waylay inspectors (tax and health). Incredible practice really!
I agree with the emerging powers of blog. It has the power of intrigue and the bandwagon effect. If used with the sleight of the tongue, like that of a politician, it develops into a cult. If used with dubious means it sometimes take us to justify someone’s end.
By the way, my cockfighting stance and was doused with the warm development on the golf waning drama. People afterall get to realize that sports cannot mix with antagonism. Its fortunate one side retained also a good lawyer.
Just to be fair, I think we should also hear the story from the other side. Tama si TruBlue, we should also know first the Dela Paz family, baka naman naunahan lang ng sumbong sa Blog ang mga Pangandaman.
I am not siding with the Pangandamans, but to be fair, we should likewise hear their side. I am a golfer, and from what I heard from golfers, the Dela Paz’s allegedly started it all when the elder Dela Paz poked his umbrella to the Mayor. And the younger one, Bino used his driver to hit the Pangandamans.
Again, I am not taking sides, but I guess it is just fair to hear both sides of the stories, don’t you think so?
You got a point, andres. Still, no father in his right mind would risk the safety and life of his 14 years old son and 18 years old daughter against much bigger men. Assuming that the elder Dela Paz started the fight, why did the Pangandamans use their physical superiority and armed bodyguards against the Dela Paz family? And they continued the assault inside the club house.
If I would take a good surmise, Delapaz didn’t even crossed his mind these people overtaking them (which is unethical of course) were plain goons. These unruly behaviors made him unruly himself but I don’t blame him one bit. He was just outnumbered and outmuscled. Bodyguards with guns inside the golf course can only happen in our lovely homeland. Didn’t our National Anthem contain these phrases “ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo” – so silly!
Dela Paz could be one guy who follows rules and observe golf etiquettes. If he confronted those government goons, he has every right to do so.
It was unfortunate that his two children are top golfers representing the country in international tournaments. Now, how could they be motivated? They spent their own money for practices and competition abroad…is this the government’s way of saying thanks to them?
Wow! Ducky boy made my Email a good example of a reader daw who reads only a column if the write-up agrees to her/his opinion!
“Thanks a lot, boy! Am thankful I’ve made the right decision to stop reading your column, (2 years ago?).”
Was it you, Tongue, who posted his site here, that made me curious about his article on this Golf incident?
Kung nagalit siya, my fault! Was just honest! Siguro dahil, Ducky used to be my favorite columnist. I never missed reading his column everyday! So, instead of confronting, I just decided to ignore his column.
Truth is, MISS ko ang DATING Ducky Paredes!
I was the one who posted his column. I also posted his reply to me. He’s a goner.
See how the rich and the powerful could do. Had it not for Bambee’s blog, the Dela Paz family had no chance to pursue the case against the goons.
MANILA, Philippines – Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman Sr. on Friday said his son, Nasser Jr., has already filed a libel case against the daughter of Delfin de la Paz over her blog entry about the golf course brawl in Antipolo City last December 26.
The DAR chief said his son, who is the mayor of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, filed Thursday the case against Bambina “Bambee” de la Paz. He said his son found the blog entry, which heavily criticized the Pangandamans, libelous.
