GMA and People Power One

Much as Gloria Arroyo would have wanted to be out of the country when the Filipino people commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first People Power, she will be here because her visit to Washington D.C has been cancelled.

What happened to her Feb. 21 luncheon speaking engagement at the National Press Club in Washington D.C.?

A DFA source said it was postponed.” She accepted but it was moved to a later date which we still have to agree on.”

The real story, a source said, was that the State Department did not support an Arroyo official visit on those dates.

It was the idea national security adviser Norberto Gonzales for Arroyo to be in Washington on the week of the EDSA One celebration. Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo and Ambassador Alberto del Rosario were not consulted. With the help of the American public relations firm they had hired, Venable LLP, they were able to get a luncheon speaking engagement at the NPC. DFA was brought in later to get appointments with State department as well as meeting with business groups to justify a US trip.

Del Rosario said in an ambush interview last week that Arroyo’s official activities in Washington D.C. must befit “an official of her status.” That means a meeting with Bush. A DFA source said, “Even if we get (State) Secretary Condoleezza Rice to meet with her, which is unlikely, it would still be embarrassing because she is a head of state and she should meet with Bush.”

Even in the annual APEC summit, Bush did not grant Arroyo’s request for a one-on-one meeting in between plenary sessions. She had to be content with casual conversations at the dinner table and while waiting for the group photo session or during restroom breaks.

Last month, when Malacañang reporters asked Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye about Arroyo’s February trip to the US he replied that they were still working on another country that she would visit.

Actually, they first tried Saudi Arabia but the King was not very interested in receiving her. Sources said, they also tried Spain but it didn’t work out.

Why they didn’t try Iraq, where some 4,000 Filipinos are working, escapes me.

Since Arroyo’s won’t be meeting with the American journalists in Washington D.C. on the 21st, Malacañang decided to accept the long-standing invitation of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines to be their guest in a luncheon meeting on that day.

Twelve days to the 20th anniversary of EDSA One, the EDSA People Power Commission, created in 1999 by President Estrada to “perpetuate and propagate the spirit of EDSA”, does not seem to be in the spirit of celebrating the event that has inspired other countries in the world to break free from the yoke of dictatorship through a bloodless revolution.

A member of the Commission, Chris Carrion, who is also the founder of the Spirit of Edsa Foundation, said the new chairman of the body that is tasked to initiate activities “that will expand awareness of the principles and values that the EDSA People Power stands for” is businessman Enrique Razon.

Carrion said he was the one who suggested Razon because “he has the resources”.

Carrion said he has submitted a proposed program for the four-day celebration starting Feb. 22 but it has not yet been approved. In the program, Arroyo is supposed to attend the flag-raising ceremony at the Edsa Shrine together with former President Corazon Aquino, former President Fidel Ramos and other EDSA One participants on Feb. 25.

Last January 20, Arroyo ignored the 5th anniversary of EDSA Dos that brought her to power in 2001. It’s interesting to see how she will observe Edsa One.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism has put together a multimedia presentation called, Edsa 20/20 to mark the historic event. PCIJ’s “I report” magazine features 20 personalities, whose role in Edsa One as well as the impact of People Power One on their lives, tells the story of the country. Interviews with these personalities including former President Aquino, former president Ramos, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile and Imelda Marcos can be heard by podcast at the PCIJ blog (www.pcij.org/blog). There will also be a photo exhibit at Glorietta 1 from February 15 to 26.

On previous encounters with this group, Gloria bragged that she gets sex three times a day – routinely. Perhaps there is improvement this time, i.e. four times??

  2. Ferdinand Ferdinand

Is that true Alitaptap? that She bragged of having sex 3 x a day?

The Boys at the Ranch probably sent word for her not to come around. No time for fiddle-faddlin’ with unreliable foreign politicians lurkin’ around for a lil Cowboy love. Besides, the Republicans won’t soon forget that GMA and the Palace were openly supporting John Kerry near the end of the 2004 race (playing the polls and hoping for a Dem win). Plus with her own “wiretapping” problems, she’s the last one GWB would wanna have around him right now and be asked about cellphones and such.

    DJB,

Your hunch is very, very probable: “Plus with her own “wiretapping” problems, she’s the last one GWB would wanna have around him right now and be asked about cellphones and such. “

  5. An EDSA I celebration, to be meaningful, should focus on the
expectations of the people that were not achieved. Many of the participants used to refer to EDSA I as a “revolution.”
I am glad such referrals have become muted lately. EDSA I is
actually an aborted revolution. The expectations of radical
political and social change, which is the main feature of a
revolution, never took place. Let us look at some of the
things EDSA I failed to accomplish :

    1) Re-distribution of wealth;
    2) Honest government;
    3) Transfer of political power from the Trapos to
    a new breed of politicians;
    4) Equal justice under the law;
    5) Faster economic growth;
    6) Eradication of insurgency, etc.

The other bloggers may wish to continue the list in terms
of the hopes of the people at the time of EDSA I which
remain unfulfilled to this day. The biggest expectation of
all was to bring to justice FM and his cronies. No member of the Marcos family or his cronies have gone to jail. Only
a pittance of the Marcos stolen wealth have been recovered.
The common man still awaits a genuine revolution.

  6. Not only that “a pittance of teh marcos stolen wealth have been recovered.” What had been recovered had been stolen again. That’s what the committee of Sen. Magsaysay has uncovered. Some of it was used in the 2004 elections and the bulk, I bet, ended up in the pockets of you know who and their friends.

yup. with the help of loida nicolas lewis mobilizing the fil-am community for Kerry. they failed miserably though.

  9. a de brux a de brux

    John,

Did Loida N Lewis really bat for Kerry?

    This might interest you:

During the 1998 RP presidential election, L N Lewis backed Erap’s candidacy; she even autographed her husband Reginald’s book titled “Why should the whites have all the fun” (or something like that) by “Dear Mr Vice-President,” but she crossed out “Vice”. This was sometime in late 1997.

Loida had held a lavish reception in her New York offices before that for Erap or sometime in the summer of 1997 attended by the usual Erap cronies, among them: Robert Aventajado and Carlos ‘Butch’ Tuason, first cousin of First Fatman Mike Tuason Arroyo (and husband to Gloria Macapal) and who used to be one of the drinking cronies of Erap but who now accompanies Mike Tuason to San Francisco very often today as well as becoming the PNP’s ‘favored’ supplier of pistols through family-owned Armscor Trading Corp and Squibb Bingham. Mely Nicolas, sister of Loida of the Hyatt 10 fame was there at the reception for Erap.

After Erap won, Robert Aventajado was displeased with Loida because he thought that Loida should have funneled her financial contributions towards Erap’s election campaign through his own JEEP organization instead of through Ronnie Zamora.

In July 2000, Loida made an offer to Erap to buy PNB but Lucio Tan stuck to his guns and wouldn’t sell out. Loida stormed out of Manila after a last-minute negotiation with Erap and Tan failed in July that year.

After that, the relationship between Loida and Erap went downhill.

  10. a de brux a de brux

    By the way, John,

Mely Nicolas also used to be the social secretary of Cory Aquino in Malacanang too; Mely replaced Letty Shahani in FVR’s cabinet as secretary of women’s affairs or some idiotic, invented post like that.

  14. GMA is just actually fulfilling her 10 Points Agenda in her inaugural speech. Let us review her Agenda again.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s 10-point agenda, as pronounced in her inaugural speech.

    1. The creation of six million accomplices confidants and collaborators in six years via more bribery, exploitations, fraudulents, nepotism given to cronies, friends , relatives and associates tripling of the amount of collections from deceptions, misrepresentations and manipulations within and out of Government sectors and agencies and the development of one to two million hectares of land for Monkey-business.

    2. The construction of new buildings, classrooms, provision of desks and chairs and books for students and scholarships to families of all associates, friends, confidants and collaborators.
    3. The collection of the budget of all Government funds and treasuriesby the OP ( office of the President )

    4. The “decentralization” of such collections around the nation through the use of grape-vine networks like the roll-on, roll-off and the digital infrastructure to enhance over-all process of collections, misrepresentations and fraudulents.

    5. The provision of electricity and water supply to barangays nationwide in exchange for all the votes of their whole residence.

    6. The decongestion of Metro Manila by forming new cores of government and housing centers in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao all appointed by the OP,

    7. The development of Clark and Subic as the best international service and logistic centers in the region prioritizing the investments of all associates and confidants,

    8. The automation of Winners of all associates and confidants from Newly provided electoral process,

    9. A Force-end to the peace process from all Peoples demonstrations and remonstrations for their clamor for Justice, Peace , Prosperity and Progress, and last

    10. The Ultimate closure to the divisiveness among the Edsa 1, 2 and 3 forces.

Gloria has no role in EDSA 1. The so-called celebration of the said People Power should be attended by personalities like Senators J. Ponce-Enrile, Gregorio Honasan, FVR (sige na nga, kahit alam kong nakisakay lang siya) and other RAM boys, Cory Aquino(I remember nagpi-people power na, pero wala si Tita Cory doon sa EDSA, nasa sanctuary pa siya) whom we know are the prime players of the event, and of course the Filipino people.

Why Enrique Razon as chairman of People Power Commission? Wasn’t his father a crony of Marcos? Would he have any feeling for People Power?

He is one of Gloria Arroyo’s dependable financiers so she can cling to power even to the detriment of the country. And he is in charge of EDSA One celebration?

Gloria Arroyo really hates People Power.

  18. Chris Carrion said he suggested Razon because “he has the resources.”

From there, you can see how EDSA One,from the point of view of Malacañang, has been reduced to whoever “has resources.”

  19. Ricky Carandang Ricky Carandang

    Ellen,
This is not the first time the US has snubbed Gloria. When She sought meeting with Bush when she went to the UN and APEC and both times she was turned down.
I undestand that when John Negroponte visited Manila in December, it was not to express support but to convey the displeasure of the US government at a plan the palace is cooking up to declare emergency rule.
But hey, that’s just coffee shop chatter, right/

  20. “Who has the resources”? It’s laughable!

Today at NATO, US Defense Sec. Rumsfeld admitted something that people have been afraid has been true for some time: the US military is stretched thin and needs help in Europe and in Asia. I think the Americans are expecting a BIG STRIKE by Al Qaeda. One theory is that they have been building a Bomb in pieces and will try to ship it into a US port. It doesn’t even have to pass customs. I think the threat of a nuclear strike on the US is real. El Baradei said so when he received his Nobel Peace Prize. I only wish the Philippines could be of more help. Though there has been a high tech nuclear contraband detector installed in the Port of Manila for almost a year, there is no anti terror law because the President is pinned down by her own lies and the needs of daily survival and firefighting. She can’t lead in impt policy areas like anti terror legislation because it does require real mental and moral leadership to call the people to WAR. The debate never got past “What is terrorism, Yogi?” GMA promised anti terror law back in 2001, five years ago. Nada por nada!

  24. It is lamentable that EDSA I, the very first manifestation of People Power, is no longer remembered with any joy. Many claim it’s because we stopped when we started, that EDSA II marred the original, there’s a plethora of other reasons. That may be true, but in and of itself, that four day period in February of 1986 was truly a special time in our history. Many of us who lived through it still hold that experience dear. Many of us still try to effect change peacefully because we know that it can be done.

It took 14 years to dispose of the Dictator Marcos. From 21 August 1983 till the snap election of 1986, there were less than 20,000 of us that took to the streets without fear. Marcos was tough, we were terrified, but we prevailed. Ridding ourselves of this woman will be a walk in the park. As long as we remember that we have the power to do that.

I can hear people ask – but what’s the tipping point? You know, that phrase didn’t exist in the 80’s. All we knew was that we couldn’t take it anymore, and we stood up and did something about it. Nowadays, people have other ways of dealing with “it”. We couldn’t talk then from fear of being picked up by Ping’s Metrocom. Now we have the internet, cellphones, the freedom of speech – the means to let off steam. Could it be then that we are more comfortable sitting at home, typing on our blogs, texting our pals, venting in the beer garden? Have we become fat and lazy from an overdose of freedom?

    overdose of freedom?

ganyan rin naman yung kay erap ah? mas may freedom pa nga sa panahon ni erap kaysa ngayon eh.

but like marcos, maybe the people who supported edsa dos “couldn’t take erap” anymore too? and erap had to go, PERIOD.

I don’t think it’s about “becoming fat or lazy”, it’s more about some people’s reluctance (people who used to support GMA) to go all out against anybody other than marcos, erap, ping etc etc…

  26. EDSA I was really a heroic undertaking by the people who
participted in it. It is unfortunate that it did not really
become a revolution resulting in fundamental changes in our society. What happened in EDSA I is a simple transfer of
power from one clique of the ruling elite to another.
The military component of EDSA I was actually a falling apart of the ruling Ilocano clique running the Martial Law
regime. The Ilocano ruling clique of the military split into the FM/Ver versus FVR/JPE factions.

You can explain the civilian component of EDSA I in terms of the politics of the Cojuangco family. Danding which was
with the in FM group during Martial Law, was displaced by the Cory/Peping Cojuangco clique. Thus EDSA could be explained in terms of the familiar Latin American coups with a faction of the military seizing power in alliance with a faction of the elites. The new military/elite alliance that emerged from EDSA I was the Cory/Peping and FVR clique.

As noted, and a lesson for those who seem to be too eager for a military solution to our problems, even the FVR/JPE
faction quickly fell apart. JPE became associated with the
Honasan coups during the Cory administration. Thus the
final outcome of EDSA I was a new military/elite alliance
composed of Cory/Peping C. and FVR. That alliance will last
until 1998 when Erap won and Danding got back into power.
Danding bet on the correct horse in 1998.

The elections in 1992 was pivotal because Cory had a choice
to back up Mitra instead of FVR. But Mitra had been flirting with Danding so that made him unacceptable to Cory.
But that could only be a facade. It is easier to explain
the Cory/FVR alliance in terms of the usual Latin American
model. A ruling elite backs up a faction of the military
in return its economic interests are protected. Hacienda
Luisita for example, was not distributed to the tenants.

Where did this leave the common man? They were nowhere in the picture. The message was in fact very clear from the
beginning of the Cory Administration. A big number of
demonstrators from the lower classes were gunned down by the military right before the gates of Malacanang a few months after EDSA I. The hidden message of this event is the old order is still in effect. The elites will continue to run this country. Restructuring our society and giving the poor a break never entered the picture. The common
man still awaits a real revolution.

  27. Urgie F. of New York City Urgie F. of New York City

The 1898 unfinished revolution of Andres Gat Bonifacio still struggling. Time will come the dream of every common Filipinos be alive. Yes, the common man still awaits a real revolution. We could not say that poor Filipinos are free now a days. The vast wealth of our country control by very few people- elites.Besides, politically and economically are in the hands to these selfish people and at the same time they acted as an agent of foreign power particularly the US, call this neo-colonizer. Every policies and/or measures to be formulated by the Philippines govenment, especially in financial matter are dictated by IMF and World Bank.Like EVAT is one of the measure that imposed to the Filipino people.Darating ang araw si Juan de la Cruz ay kakapit sa patalim dahil sa bulok na lipunan na ang naghahari ay mga oligarch na gutom sa kapangyarihan at kasabwat ng IMF at World Bank. People making a peaceful revolution is imposible, real revolution is inevitable.

Kung ayaw tanggapin si Gloria sa US at Saudi Arabia, ibig sabihin Gloria is a pariah in the world community. She is also was the laughing stock during the Asean economic summit when she visited South Korean university where she was clothe like a clown and the university president pinning a sash on her was grinning clownishly. It was on this occasion when she bragged that the peso was the darling of Asia. “Baloney!!” howled the citizens of the internet. “The peso is not worth even toilet paper”.
I was watching last evening the 700 Club Show broadcasting the Graham Evangelical rally showing Gloria in attendance with de Venecia tagging along like a puppy of a string. Against this backdrop the commentator narrates the expoits of massive cheating in the recent elections and the unbridled raiding of the treasury of the government. And the camera zoomed in on Gloria sitting prim and proper and saintly as could be. Mind you, this was shown on international audience.

  34. Thanks Coco for the link to the Newsbreak article on Franklin Graham. Here are some lines from the article:

Graham has repeatedly made anti-Islam remarks and does not regret them….

Graham’s visit to the Philippines is dangerous to internal Philippine security and stability. It won’t sit well that an American evangelist calling Islam evil and wicked comes to a country where terrorist bombings and kidnappings continue unabated and a three-decade civil war plods on. The country is still left with the residual tensions in poverty-stricken and terrorist-stricken Mindanao

It was insensitive of Arroyo to be with him at the time when demonstrations are being staged by Muslim Filipinos against cartoons derogatory of Muhammad which appeared in Danish and other European newspapers. And the Philippines has been silent about it.

Karl, just because the u.s. is silent on the the Phil. doesn’t mean that Ms.Arroyo has reason to grin about it. They can not even know where to start challenging the President EO 464, which in every sense of the world is unconstitutional. She will take refuge in Cebu.

    Despicable woman! Pathetic persona!

  39. Alitaptap Alitaptap

Gloria may take refuge in Cebu or Timbukto but she cannot take refuge from herself. It is very apparent that she is scared of her own shadow. Corruption and cheating will forever haunt her – ghosts of her own making. You put it very aptly, Ellen. “Refuge” is the operating word! Imagine a person, and a pretender too, seeking refuge in her own country! She does feel safe even at malacanang. She had to disarm the palace guards for fear of assasination. I imagine that her knees are knocking together whenever she hears and sees protesters roaming the streets. From recent pictures of her pinning gold crosses to some policemen, her face looked puffed or bloated – sign of just getting up from a short nap. That is the result of not getting any sleep at night. In due time, the pretender will self-destruct, physically and spiritually. When that comes to pass, I commiserate with most of the media – they won’t have ‘madame president’ to lap and emulate.

  40. Alitaptap Alitaptap

    Mamselle de brux,
