Former presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor today accepted defeat in the senatorial race.
“I concede to ease the tension … and to dismiss any notion that there may be illegal acts committed to attain my victory,” he said in a press conference with his wife July Rose and four children.
Defensor is at No. 15 based on the latest results of the national canvassing by the Commission on Elections.
“I am already sure that I cannot land within the Magic 12 of the senatorial bets. It is just numerically impossible,” Defensor said.
Defensor said his defeat “is not the President’s loss.”
“Her role is to ensure that democracy is respected and that she has accomplished,” he said.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said he was surprised by Defensor’s decision.
He said Defensor never mentioned anything about conceding when they met Monday night.
Presidential adviser for political affairs Gabriel Claudio said Defensor merely affirmed his virtues as a good sport and a gentleman.
Team Unity spokesman Joseph Durano said as far as the administration bets are concerned, they will just “heed the will of the voters.”
Team Unity media director and Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone would not accept defeat, noting that there are still some five million uncounted votes which he called “decisive” and likely to make more TU bets win, citing the small margins that separate those in the 8th to the 16th places.
Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, United Opposition president, asked Team Unity candidates outside the Magic 12 to concede.
“President Arroyo must tell the Team Unity candidates to shut up and accept the judgment of the people. It was Mrs. Arroyo herself who made an appeal immediately after the May 14 elections for everyone to accept the results of the election. We trust that the appeal is also addressed to administration candidates,” Binay said.
Binay chided Team Unity’s earlier statement that it will ask the Comelec to declare a failure of elections in Metro Manila and other opposition bailiwicks.
“I think this is a diversionary tactic. The Team Arroyo wants to take away public attention from the documented cases of fraud and cheating in areas which they are claiming to be their bailiwicks,” he said.
He assailed Team Unity’s deputy spokesman for singling out Makati as one of the cities they want to be investigated by the Comelec.
“I don’t know why Makati was singled out. The election in Makati was covered extensively by media. We had the National Movement for Free Elections and foreign observers. The Comelec investigation would show who cheated and the cheating they (administration) committed. Violations were made by Lakas and Kampi on election day, but on the whole Makati elections were peaceful and orderly,” Binay said. – With Jocelyn Montemayor and Ashzel Hachero

There seems to be crack in Team Unity, or even amongst Gloria’s men because of their reactions to this move of Mike Defensor. What comes to my mind is there COULD be some sort of power vacuum in the Palace..

I am happy for him and for the rest of those who did not make it to the magic twelve. although the election was not as perfect as we would have liked it, it looks like the people have matured. I really hope that the twelve will not fail the expectations of the people. Honasan is given another chance to prove himself. Questions is, how will Trillanes perform if he is still detained?
Now, if only he would concede that the Filipino nation doesn’t need him, would even be better for everyone concerned – I suggest that having done the right thing this once, Mike Defensor should leave the political scene altogether and if he could persuage his mistress to do the same, then that would be just grand.

I would’ve considered Mike a class act if he hadn’t stood by this Administration for as long as he did. To this day he has not acknowledged the wrongs that Gloria has done to the people including, but not limited to, the ‘Hello Garci’ controversy.

Mike has not even begun to do the heavy work in cleaning up his name.. Although this concession is a class act, anything less than a denunciation of the current President will fall on deaf ears.
I don’t believe that this last act by this Gloria dog deserves admiration – fine that he’s done it but as Nick says it would’ve been class act if he hadn’t stood by Gloria’s crass acts all this time.

I’ve not been fooled by Defensor getting out of the heat of the kitchen before the SchizoChef returns back from her various junket trips. For me, its difficult to admire any action of a person who was an out and out yes man, prepared to be a liar for the sake of keeping his rank and position with someone who has an obvious mental problem.

By the way, the SOFA that will be signed between RP and Australia under the auspices of the office of Gloria bruha should be examined with a fine toothcomb.
SOFA, Status of Forces Agreement was patterned after NATO-SOFA (I know coz the guy that negotiated the SOFA for Pinas talked to me about it at length); I reminded the this friend of mine that SOFA (the NATO one) has provisions in it allowing for foreign troops not only to do military exercises but to get stationed in the host country requiring the setting up of military bases for the visiting troops (therefore foreign) or that goes against RP Constitution.
Friend told me that he reminded then DND chief (Cruz) about it – he even snickered that Cruz was just immitating the SOFA (NATO) for RP without knowing the full substance of what he was copying implying that Cruz may be a legal eagle but was still short on the very fine lines in military treatises.
Of course, the Aussies would be in in high heavens – imagine they would be able to extend their tentacles and set up military facilities in Pinas that is if the SOFA they are signing with Pinas is NATO-SOFA carbon copied.
As I’ve said time and again, in this same blog, the Aussies have more intel assets parked in Pinas than US CIAs put together.
I alerted Sen Pimentel about this when the first draft of SOFA was submitted to Pinas. He said at the time that he didn’t know what the treaty contained yet and so he’d rather wait and see.
For all you know, the SOFA that Gloria is about to sign (her DFA chief actually) might be a trap – you might wake up being surrounded not only by American troops but by Aussie troops too and all in violation of RP Constitution. While these foreign troops might want to be helpful to Pinas, their presence could also spark an Iraq scenario in the Philippines, sort of an accident waiting to happen.
Anyway, Philippines beware!
Oh btw, I have no doubt the the US urged Pinas to go for the SOFA treaty with Australia. Not that Americans couldn’t have twisted the arm of Gloria to sign a SOFA with them but with the VFA already going in flames, they needed an ally to take the heat away and who better than Australia to do it for them – acting as surrogate SOFA signatory for the US?
Australian defence dealers have been some of the most corrupt of the corrupt – they made several commanders of the Philippine Coast Guard VERY VERY WEALTHY!
Once a shipbuilding company tried to sell a project to Pinas and almost sold it to the Navy complete with equipment that were still on the drawing board had I not shown them evidence that the company in question was about to go bankrupt unless they signed the deal with the Navy (the deal would have given them a lease on life and would have been used in Australia to get new investors in their company.) They had a broker who was a former military officer living in Forbes park and who happened to be an excellent bosom buddy of a former Senator who was chairing the defence committee in the Senate.
In all the tiyanak’s travels, she is given military assistance in the form of older equipments. There is so much money in this. Just the retrofitting of the trucks and equipments cost a lot of money. It is probably even cheaper to just go ahead and buy newer equipments with warranties. Para na lang tayong basurahan talaga. Even Japan wants to dump their toxic waste in the Philippines. What will we do with all the old trucks that have balding tires( I saw about 30 of those trucks in April when I was in Camp Aguinaldo). The only thing newer was the paint but one can visibly see that the trucks are at the end of their lives. With tiyanak as our head, we look like talagang kawawa. The whole world looks at us as beggars and cheats. Wala ng ginawa itong si tiyanak kundi humingi ng limos. Wala na talagang hiya. Ang kapal talaga. She is going around asking for aid (money and equipments). In exchange for these very old equipments is the unlimited use of our land for whatever operations these countries want. If the US presence in Sulu is helpful, why were there overwhelming election cheating in that region in the May elections?
I bet you, the US, Australia and all these countries giving all the old military trucks and combat equipments are definitely so glad that they found a dumping place for these items which they probably wanted to put to rest in their junk yards.
